Petland's are independently owned and operated.

Are you sure that the store you're talking about sources their puppies this way?

If you look above Tom, she has something from the Humane Society specifically stating the fairfax store. But it is from a few years ago.

Yes, but that's 4 years ago. (2008/9) It could still be true, but you want to be sure it's accurate (or, at least current) before pushing this stuff out. Why not ask the owner for information?

I tried to find the report at the link above (stoppuppymils.org). It's old and produces a 404 error. Do they still have the report available online?

The link now takes you to the HSUS. Here's a list of their current campaigns:

http://www.humanesoc...sues/campaigns/

  • Farm animal protection
  • Stop puppy mills
  • End animal cruelty and fighting
  • Be cruelty free
  • Fur-free
  • Protect seals
  • Wildlife abuse
  • Wild horses
  • Adopt a shelter pet
  • Chimps deserve better

If you have an interest in any of their campaigns, please see the link above.

I suggest walking past the puppy section and going straight to the back of the store. The fish department and puppy department are run seperately so just support the one you need. You have already found that they carry stuff other stores don't. Petland has been a good supporter of WAMAS and I think they are an asset to the club.

By you trying to get the club to no longer shop at the aquatic department will only lead to that section going away. The customer base for the puppies will still be there and will keep going on, so I doubt the store would close. Maybe even expand to fill in the then empty aquatic section.

from the Yelp link a customer review dated December 2012 their puppy was from the Hunte Corporation (puppy Mill broker) on the paperwork they received after purchasing the puppy. I posted the reviews where everyone can make up their own oppinion. What WAMAS does and its members is up to you but people need to be informed also. I just spoke to Fairfax City Animal Control. Tom if you want to call me I will give you more details but I did file a complaint with animal control over the situation of the pups (there was more than what I posted here but I needed to speak to Animal Control first).

This is still weighing me down majorly. I was a Vet Tech for years, I helped close pet stores that abused their animals, I have worked with everything from wild life to domestic most of my life. I can not support a store that does this. Pez and I went into a store last summer non WAMAS vendor when we were trying to get info on SW. As soon as I walked in I noticed their repitiles, and small mamals were not being properly cared for. We never made it to the aquarium section as I dragged pez out. I look at every stores retail, all pets for sale, etc. If I see something off I might question an employee and go from there and try to educate if they do not understand. I am a major softy when it comes to animals of all shapes and sizes.

This is not new news...Petland joined WAMAS after the referenced offenses you have citied and I'm sure this was taken into account. Thus, I am shocked WAMAS is supporting the defamation of a club sponser without any recent proof (Yelp review in not credible). Moreover, if you do believe there is an offense why broadcast it on a forum that Petland has access to?!?! Gives them heads up to correct whatever error/s you are accusing them of. Not defending Petland, never been there, but seems as if you handled this inappropiately and I look forward to the outcome of this investigation 1) for the pups sake, 2) for your credibility sake.

Do vendors have access to this section? I thought this was members only that is why I did not post this in their vendor forum? If this was just an accusation I would not have made a complaint to animal control about the situation I saw there. I never call out a person or vendor unless I feel the situation is desperate. This blindsided me yesterday as I could not believe it. Everyone can form their own oppinion that is why I posted link to a wide range of material from consumer reviews to HSUS docs. As for my own credibility I know I am new here but when it comes to situations like this I have worked with the SPCA, HSUS, as a Vet Tech, Wild life Rehab, to Director of Adoptions for a Rescue for over 20 years.

Premium Sponsors and Vendor-Members have access. Plain vanilla vendors do not. However, the two guys who run the Aquatic section are long-time members here and are responsible for the revival of their saltwater section and inventory. This is one part of that business's recent changes that I want to encourage.

Obviously, it is up to each individual to determine if they wish to shop with any particular vendor for whatever reason. Long time members know that we do not "protect" any vendor, irrespective of their sponsor status. It doesn't take much time to search and find where we've had sponsors and even premium sponsors get dinged here (though praise is more typical). We do ask that you use the Vendor Feedback information to provide factual and helpful (preferably first-hand and not heresay) information to the community, and prefer that it not be used to extract revenge or exact leverage to an ongoing disagreement. (I'm not saying that this is what's going on here. It's just something that we've seen come up from time to time.) And, if you have a particular disagreement with any vendor, we often suggest trying to work it out with the vendor first. More often than not, our vendors try to make their best reasonable effort to satisfy their customers knowing full well that it's that service that gains them our loyalty and repeat business.

The problem here, in my opinion, is that this thread has become more of an animal rights issue than about the hobby we all love. I think this is beyond the scope of this forum and club...Just my 2 cents.

Well said. Couldn't agree more.

I did not mean to cause an issue and I apologize to those that were offended and you are right it is an animal rights issue that I believe strongly in and can not support. I honestly thought others would like to know where they would not have the situation I did yesterday. I wish one of you would have warned me as we would not have this discussion now. I want to support our local LFS and vendors but I can not support one that does this. I wish the guys that are working so hard to improve their aquatics would branch out on their own as they seem like nice guys. I am not going to stop this fight with puppy mills though and I am working with animal control on a few situations but it is not illegal to not disclose an animal is from a puppy mill but I will pass the word to all I know.

Im glad to have this knowledge. I choose to support local stores that have similar beliefs when it comes to my pets. Thats why i support a local dog food bakery and order my food through them and pay more. But i too do not want to support any store that should and could make better decisions for animals they bring in.

I have gone here 2 times and wondered but kinda of walked by and ignored that gut feeling, thinking it was just me being over zealous.

It may not be reef related in the end but it is about the store itself and the LFS contained within gains and loses from that part of the business.

So, I appreciate the information!

Since I have received a few PMs asking I wanted to put it out there that Sean at F&F did not tell me about this place. From what I understand he had issues with them a few years ago. I did not join WAMAS until Aug 2012 so I do not know anything about what took place years ago. Also if he would have warned me I would have NEVER set foot in the door of this place. Yes Sean is helping us with our aquarium and yes I consider him and Gloria a friend but Sean & Gloria and I do not see eye to eye on everything in the pet world. We do agree 100% on our Redskin passion though. :)

I wish he or anyone would have warned me as it would have made my life much easier. If anyone knows of another place I should avoid please PM me and warn me.

Once again sorry for any trouble this might have caused WAMAS or its members but I still feel it was right to warn others.

Holy cow.......why is this such a big deal to post this info....

its just a reef forum??? if you dont want to read it DONT READ IT....not sure how talking about pricing, customer service, selection is any different...has to do with the store not the reef.

this is the vender feedback forum...not the reef feedback forum.

didnt see any problems with the dog food thread.

thanks for the post and sorry it caused such a stir.

I stand by my opinion.

If you stated it as opinion, then bygones. But when you state it as fact, and you dont even know the facts you're breeding misinformation. This is my biggest problem with stores like that, they give the hard working people in this industry that make ethical decisions as to where they purchase animals a bad name.
