rocko918 April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 I would not have put those frag in my tank if anything came off like that. Cut your loses now. If they are aefw's its going to be a H-E-double hockey sticks of a lot harder to get rid of them later. Sorry to hear it, take you time and do it right. Take care of the fish you have too.
DaveS April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 Sonny shouldnt have to fix it, he should do things right the first time. Ryan, do yourself a favor, buy healthy corals from reputable stores. I gave them a try recently, only to find the exact same thing. My order was sitting in hold for 2 weeks due to an error with it getting shipped out (no ones fault there), when they arrived I felt the same way. I know what the difference between a frag cut recently and a frag that been sitting for a couple weeks. The LPS sides where it was cut couldnt have been anymore white. Not to mention that my 1 "limit 1" wasnt even the one I ordered. I knew the possibility going into it, and when it happened I wasnt really suprised at all. I didnt see the need for a flame post nor did I see the need to question them. I simply cured my curiousity and justified why I will NEVER do business with them again. The extra money places like BRK and F&F charge is WELL worth it IMO. Luckily everything I ordered is still alive (so far), so we shall see. Be patient, and spend your money wisely once. Mistakes happen. It's how they get resolved that is a true measure of things. Maybe you'll have a good story in the end. I would not have put those frag in my tank if anything came off like that. Until you've had AEFW it's hard to trash that precious new frag you just spent your money on. But once you have had them, you realize doing that is still 1000x better than having to trash that gigantic SPS colony you spent years growing. If the frags were brown, dying, and not what you wanted I definitely would have tossed them. It's like getting an STD from an ugly old lady....
STEVE April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 100% agree !!!! Cut your loss, fix the problem now ! Chalk it up to experience ! Move on.
GraffitiSpotCorals April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 Don't throw them away if they are already in the tank. Just do you reading on sps pests and keep your eyes open. Good luck man.
Chad April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 It's like getting an STD from an ugly old lady.... Man, what's in the water today? This is really, really funny! (and Dave, how would you know that? )
STEVE April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 No...dont throw them away, just give them to Piper, he just spent 6 months getting rid of his flat worms! lol.
GraffitiSpotCorals April 5, 2012 April 5, 2012 Hey I had them for a year! Come on... But I certainly did spend a handful of months dipping and trying to rid them from the tank the wrong way... And I am not saying they are gone! If I do I feel like they will come back. I still freak out over nothing and Amanda has to take the coral from me and tell me there is nothing wrong. Man thoes things make me crazy... But I will take them if you don't want them
surf&turf April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 Man, what's in the water today? This is really, really funny! (and Dave, how would you know that? ) ^^^^^^^ is was wondering the same thing, but was afraid to ask.
Ryan S April 6, 2012 Author April 6, 2012 Could I started dosing vodka? I want to get my nitrates and phosphates down to 0, and with the pukani rock leeching PO4, and the popping up of hair algae and cyano everywhere, is there any reason to not start dosing vodka to tackle these issues? I'd follow the instructions here.
Der ABT April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 GEEEEZZZ>.....STOP...just STOP. ...dont do anything else right now...let the tank be...corals looked happy now is the patience time. vodka can work and vodka can burn you coral up if you get it wrong...or cause even worse cyano....biopellets can do the same....its best to let your tank establish itself and then go at them.... your rock will be leaching for a while from what ive read about the pukini and its just keeping up with regular water change schedule and really getting the stuff off of the rocks that will do best.. you need to set a channel on your apex that puts compulsive quick fixes to off!!!!
Ryan S April 6, 2012 Author April 6, 2012 omg! should i turn off my gfo, carbon, alk, cal, and skimmer now too? i'll just skip water changes and cover the sides with blankets and not look at it for 6 months, then see how it's doing!
Incredible Corals April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 Just let the tank run its natural cycle/course. It is becoming more and more stable and you dont need to add any other equipment to the tank or mechanical filtration. There are no short cuts in this hobby that are beneficial long term. I know its hard to leave a new tank a lone and you want to keep getting your hands wet. If I were you I would focus on the keep the glass clean and weekly 10-20% water changes. Also another good thing to do is to use an application like Aqua Planner Pro on an Iphone to log all your test results. You can also use Excel on your home computer to start tracking the tank progress.
Chad April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 LOL, Ryan I agree with Evan. I have a rule for myself, after I set a tank up, have the equipment running properly, have the cycle complete, and then have a CUC in place (I count herbivores as part of the CUC), I have to go hands off for at least 4 months. Tough to do, but worth it in the end.
CaptainRon April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 PATIENCE, STABILIZE. That means no changes, no additions, just let things go as they are for a while. And as Der ABT said, click the compulsive switch to OFF!
trockafella April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 I agree with Evan 100%..!! I know its been said a million times already, but nothing good happens fast in this hobby. Your tank is new, its doing what new tanks do. There really is NO instant gratification in this hobby. Honestly, what are your expectations for a 6-7 week old tank.? Most people would just now be adding things to there tank. Look at Novi, he is doing it the right way. Letting the tank cycle and mature the proper way... Instead of buying corals, fish and chemicals, go buy a few books and read read read and read some more.
BowieReefer84 April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 Ryan... Do NOT dose Vodka. That is for rookies. You should be dosing lanthanum III chloride into a filter sock to get that phoshpate out of the water. Also, dose some VSV to help drop the nitrate.

Ryan S April 6, 2012 Author April 6, 2012 Why ugh.? I hate looking at a tank that's "getting worse" everyday, and everyone basically says there is nothing I can do, just let it get worse and worse, until it's FULL of hair algae and cyano. I just want to start battling it now, versus later, when the tank is overrun.
Ryan S April 6, 2012 Author April 6, 2012 I think you should just pitch this tank and upgrade to a 300DD. Honestly... If this tank turns into a giant hair algae tank, I'll probably sell it and 1) downgrade to a 40 breeder; or leave the hobby for good. Can you imagine a 300DD full of hair algae and cyano? No thanks! This tank doesn't just have cooties. It's the tank of death.
Der ABT April 6, 2012 April 6, 2012 haha...man that was not a ton of algea....when all the rock is green then you can just take out the rock and start with new rock...or get some live rock from somebody etc... seriously the algea was not that bad, if you syphon it all out each water change, once your tank settles the algea will go away but if you want buy the 300dd and ill get it started by swapping it wiht my tank and when your ready ill hand it over haha..maybe
