jason the filter freak July 7, 2011 Author Share July 7, 2011 Difficult does not begin to describe how hard this was to do. I ended up setting up a 50 cc syringe with RO/DI line and using that to apply silicone between the baffels, there would be no way to do it with out a second set of hands
jason the filter freak July 12, 2011 Author Share July 12, 2011 (edited) Sump got finished up tonight with the help of mexicanjavafish. Also added one side of the canopy, finished up the door to the electronics cabinet. Had to pull the whole darn stand out to glue the magnets in, the only worry is if they're going to be strong enough when the weather stripping to seal the electronics cabinet is in place. Instead of doing magnets all the way around I ended up having the back of the door tuck under a piece of aluminum. Door in place And the right side of the canopy in place. jason the filter freak July 14, 2011 Author Share July 14, 2011 Unfortunately I spent a great amount of time trying to figure out arcs, and hours and hours later nothing to show for it but a increase in frustration, a need to reglue a piece of wood I very carefully and painstakingly trimmed off :(. I bought a crap ton more trim last night and hopefully will be doing more tonight. I did how ever manage to correct and continue the arc on my canopy, wich was no easy feat, you can see the gap in this pic.
jason the filter freak July 14, 2011 Author Share July 14, 2011 Any one have any idea of how I can trim down the INSIDE of a curve, the recip saw creates too much vibration and I'm worried its going to damage the 1/4" ply
Chad July 14, 2011 Share July 14, 2011 a 40 grit grinding wheel? Are you still planning gold on black or are you going to stick with the white? Either way, the contrast looks very nice!
jason the filter freak July 14, 2011 Author Share July 14, 2011 I already bought the gold. I figure if I really don't like it I can sand and start over, I really think the gold will make it distinct and independant of the tank. The idea with going with all black except trim was to make the stand dissapear/appear a seperate feature from the tank. Its going to be a subtle gold as to not look tacky. I'm going to have one special accent to overlay it as well. I don't have a barrel sander unfortunately to the sand paper trick is out.

BowieReefer84 July 15, 2011 Share July 15, 2011 I wish you the best on building your stand. It looks very difficult. Wouldn't have been easier to buy a 54 gallon stand, and skin it with new wood or something? This looks like a pain... Can't wait to see it filled! jason the filter freak July 15, 2011 Author Share July 15, 2011 So I bumped up the front rim project on the door a bit and the door comes out a bit short, but this was expected. A couple of simple furniture sliders and problem solved. I wish you the best on building your stand. It looks very difficult. Wouldn't have been easier to buy a 54 gallon stand, and skin it with new wood or something? This looks like a pain... Yes but where would be the fun &@*&$%!# in that? Seriously this project is killing me. Got the canopy front done tonight but for some reason it looks slightly off kilter on the right, not enough to be super blatently noticeable, but enough where I won't be able to look at it every day an literally hate myself. jason the filter freak July 15, 2011 Author Share July 15, 2011 If all goes well I'll start dark cycling in the next two-three weeks, I still have to build the LED fixture, but I have the rock (live rock), sand (dead, but pleanty of nutrients to cause a cycle), and all my equipment except controller lined up. Most other work like installing controller and fans etc can be done while tank is cycling.

Steve, I think you have been through 3 tanks since he started this tank thread.. No offense, but it seems like there couldve been an easier way. You have WAY more patience than I do. I just hope your happy with it in the end after all this work..
FearTheTerps July 17, 2011 Share July 17, 2011 Stand and canopy look great, are you gonna start making these for other members? Im sure a year a two wait for a stand isnt too long to wait. All kidding aside it looks really good. When I first saw the trim on the stand I thought you were trying to blend it with the chair rail that goes around the room for a built in look. That would have been really nice, but probably take you a few more months.
jason the filter freak November 10, 2011 Author Share November 10, 2011 I finally started on my lighting, but haev been too depressed to touch the tank in a long time time. I really want to finish it before I finalize buying my house. I'd like to have it plug and play in my new place. I'm considering paying someone to finish up building my lighting system... jason the filter freak November 23, 2011 Author Share November 23, 2011 Alright so I bought the resirc upgrade for the avast CS-1 skimmer. I want to make the skimmer external though. So any help would be great. esp if anyone else has this skimmer you'll have better insight hopefully. Stock in these first two pics Heres what it looks like stock underneath the base plate, it doesn't fit well or at all under my stand. With thin sched 40 I can re-route the output behind a support leg which reduces the foot print and allows it to fit in a good place under the stand, Next the output riser was too short, so I again sched 40 an make the riser higher Before I glue everything I'm going to use grey sched 40 instead of white. jason the filter freak November 23, 2011 Author Share November 23, 2011 (edited) This is the space where it needs to fit... TINY! But with a reduced foot print, it fits! Wooo Now avast cs-1 owners how do I make it water proof? What I can see being the issues is the black input barb which is a not tapped(threaded) hole, (can I get a tap that big, should I glue it?) same with the two long black threaded rods that hold the bubble concentrating chamber on, they're not threaded though the base plate. How can I make them water proof. I've already figured out how to make the flange water proof. Look it fits! jason the filter freak November 24, 2011 Author Share November 24, 2011 I'm going to have an interloking pressure held canopy rather than a hinged one for easiest access. I'm going to either suck air in the top and sides of the canopy and blow it out the top, or suck it in the top across the led bars and blow it out the sides and top, which would likely be better. I'm thinking about sucking air in/blowing air in to avoid drawing moist air into the fan. Does that make sense? Does it matter. More pics to come soon.
