BowieReefer84 October 15, 2010 Share October 15, 2010 I'm going to use individual heat sinks for each LED since I will be mounting them on the end of loc line. Since it hasn't be done before the out come will be unknown until completion. Some PROS I've thought of are: Of course being able to aim every LED individually will be just the BEES KNEES, with each led on an individual heat sink there won't be shared heat though the sink from neighboring leds, with the leds mounted on the end of lock line and two fans drawing air though a mostly enclosed canopy there will be a lot of room for head dissipation in the air around the leds. Some CONS: this is a completely untested idea and if it doesn't work I'll have to start all over again, the wires are going to be tricky to guide down the middle of the loc line (I'll be using 1/4" loc line, need 2 x 20 gauge wires to go though), mounting the heat sinks on the end of the lock line will probably be the biggest challenge of all. Hey, I'm not stalking this post but remembered you were looking at doing individual LED's. I found these individual heatsinks for 3w LED's. http://www.satisled.com/high-power-led-heatsink-suitable-for-3w-power-led-53mm22m_p170.html They are pretty cheap imo compared to what else I have seen out there... jason the filter freak January 22, 2011 Author Share January 22, 2011 Hoping maybe led technology and prices have evolved since I've been out... , many of my ideas have not changed I'm going to go with a reef angel and led lighting and hopefully be up and running in under a month
jason the filter freak January 30, 2011 Author Share January 30, 2011 (edited) So I'm ditching the door I have now that I spent all this time making... going back to the original door and just skinning the darn thing and calling it a day. I've spent entirely too long trying to make this project just perfect, but honestly on a budget, its just not worth the time and effort. The curved door I have now will be put up for free or frags :/ Guess those of you who follow this tread get first shot at the door until I'm a full member again and can list in FS/Trade areas. There is nothing wrong with the door except the curve misses fitting the curve of the 54 by a couple of degrees. In my set up the ribs don't quite clear my uprights, shouldn't be a problem with anyone building a stand from scratch. The door is made from quality luan with very little-no noticible imperfections of the grain, the door is also super light weight. Guest thefishman65 May 17, 2011 Share May 17, 2011 Well I made it through the whole thing. Am I supposed to comment here on LEDs or your other thread (which I can't find at the moment)? 24 might be a little light, but you can probably make do by aiming your lights and no SPS. So comments: I don't know all the numbers so I am assuming the tank is 20 inches tall. You are going to need some tight optics for spot lighting. A LED 4 inches above the tank with a 90 degree lens will illuminate a 4 foot circle at the bottom. Its been a while, but I think you said red and green are for spotlighting. You probably need a 10-20 degree lens. The other thing to watch is that some lenses are not uniform. IMO save your money and don't mount the white and blues to locline. Use 80 degree optics and the should spread out nicely although you may need to move some blue int and whites out.
jason the filter freak May 17, 2011 Author Share May 17, 2011 Yea I think I've settled on having the majority of blue and while leds panel mounted simple, and some extra blue, green, red ones lock line mounted.
Guest thefishman65 May 17, 2011 Share May 17, 2011 I would also be prepared to add another 12 if you decide you need more light.
jason the filter freak May 17, 2011 Author Share May 17, 2011 So new idea for lighting if its no bright enough I may consider another strand of 12 with a mix of white and blue. The idea of putting them 4 to a panel is allowing them to be transplantable to another light fixture if changing a tank.

jason the filter freak May 27, 2011 Author Share May 27, 2011 This tank is finally significanly back underway, LEDS have been purchased, sinks, fans, and drivers to follow shortly. Controller to come shortly after that. Nearly finished the canopy. I'm hoping to finish the build before july starts.
