I searched the forums before posting but i couldn't find anything. It's a pain in the rear end to buy 1 gallon jugs of distilled water. I looked at target/walmart/giant/safeway and they only had 1 gallon jugs of distilled water.

why do you need more than a gallon of distilled? You can use Deer Park or Giant brand spring water for w/c. It comes in 5 gal. containers.

I used to use distilled water in my tank, but supposedly it's not so great because it's stripped of trace elements.

Thanks Zygote2k, I looked inside my local giant their wasn't a 5 gallon of distilled. I'll look at another location. I am having to add water to my tank everyweek and i just don't want to have 5-1 gallon jugs of distilled water standing around when i can possible have one 5 gallon.

Treesprite- Everyone i've spoke with has told me to use distilled water. Before i've used my deer park delivery water to do water changes. My tank is only 4 months old or close to it. Last night i did my first water change with distilled water, I'll see if any noticeable changes in regards to algea.

Mountaineer- Sorry i didn't know how to show my location until i played with it now.

I would get your own RO unit and forget about hauling around 5g containers of water. Or, you could always get some RO water from a LFS in your own container. Aquarium One may be close to you.

Try the wholefoods in your area. The two wholefoods in Va that have RO/DI machines are in Tysons and Fairlakes. The water goes for 39c a gallon.

I think one of the places I read that about distilled way WWM, and a couple other places - it might be worth it to read around for several opinions. I think I used distilled for 2 years then switched to purified. I would not use spring water. Best way to go for the amount of water you want, is AWI's Mighty Mite RO/DI unit - you can just sit it on the counter and hook it to the faucet with an adapter (comes with it), then stick it back in the closet when you're done.

Aquarium One is the closest to you for RO/DI I think. I would also recommend you invest in a RO/DI unit of your own, but if space is an issue I would get water containers from someplace like Wal-Mart in the camping section and buy it from Aquarium One. It will be cheaper and you can dictate the size of the container.....as long as you can carry it of course. :)

Get in on the BRS group buy. There is no obligation to sign up and there could be good deals on RO systems during the buy.

I'd say buy your own ro/di filter you can reuse waste water in a number of ways... I used to buy mine from local aquarium had only a problem with it one time... I used to carry it in 7g camping containers the other way to get it is to offer to give filtes in exchange for water I'm sure someone in bethesida would love to get money for water or filters for water.

The problem with buying your water anywhere is that your at the mercy of whoever maintains the filter system they use.

I would look into getting your own RO/DI unit. Spectrapure makes highly effective filters that will pay for themselves in a very short amount of time.

I recommend the 90 Gallons per Day CSPDI-90 RO/DI System currently on sale

How large is your tank? I have a 29 gallon, and I use about 5 gallons per week of distilled water. 3 gallons for water changes and 2 gallons for top off. I use distilled water either giant brand or deerpark, and have had good sucess with both. I am paying $5 a week. Any larger of a tank and I would recommend getting your own unit as others have said. Even with a small tank it is worth it in the long run...

Thanks I'll have to check it out. Yesterday i went to Aquarium One. They sell water for 50 cents a gallon, whole foods does 39 cents a gallon. I'll go with whole foods for now. But i must say I went in for water at Aquarium One walked out with 15lbs of rock for 5.99lb when i got home to put it in my tank. There's growth all over the rock. Looks like pot coral on the rocks, i'll take some pictures and post it on here. Thanks everyone for the advice/help

I've always thought of distilled (with carbon) as being more pure than RO (with carbon). I like the fact that the water is actually boiled in the process, and filters, which can get pretty nasty are not used. I'd use distilled if I could make or buy it as cheap as RO.

As to spring water, while better than tap water, I would not use it. I've read the labels and/or company purity statements and pretty much concluded they have no standards at all. That water is not purified.

Some bottled waters which are not spring water do a good job, though, like Aquafina.

Here is a link showing a chart for a couple spring waters purity. LINK

Note the wide ranges of values for a single product (81-260 TDS!?)

One of the concerns that I would have with distilled water is the use of Copper. Does the distiller use Copper or Stainless Steel for their condensing coil? If they use Copper, it the level low enough that it won't harm our Corals?

The one in Vienna has a RO machine also. Call them first and verify its working!

I don't want to jack this thread but, does anyone know if there is one in or around Warrenton?
