Have you ever had GSP that grows this fast? I purchased a 2" dia frag from Dave S. about 8/20/08. It has since doubled in size and is now spreading at 1/4" a week. I estimate that by next spring, it will have completely covered the unique rock. The leading edge grows directly into the current. The polyps take about 2 weeks to go through their growth cycle. It starts as very thin tissue, then expands to produce a tiny polyp after a few days. On day 5-7, the polyp is about 1/4" tall. Over the next 6-7 days, the polyp grows to its' adult length of 3/4"- 1". You can see the progress in the following picture from right to left.

How do you get it to grow? I'm still tryn to get mine to grow. It's still the same size as the day I was given it which is about 3".

That and pom poms grow so fast in my tank I took it out. It was covering up corals and stuff. I couldn't believe how long the pom poms got too. Not only did it spread out horizontally, it grew about 3 inches vertically within the first three weeks. I didn't realize that stuff grows like weeds. It was getting out of hand, growing on the grass, the back of a snail that must have been stuck or chillin'. pretty much on anything that is in the vacinity. NOT TO MENTION I didn't realize that it would spread UP too. Somehow it attatched to a rock that was above it once it started growing the 3inches vertically. I thought it had to be next to something on the BASE and then it would "scoot" over. I didn't reallize it could spready via the pom pom thing to.

I guess all in all it was fun to watch since this is our first salt water and we got to see first hand how fast thing grow, move, ect. vs. freshwater.

It STILL amazes me how fast my little starfish buddy can cruise across the tank!!!!!!!!!! They don't seem like they move at all, let alone a couple minutes to get across the tank and back.

I guess your doing something right, especially with the powerhead blowing on it like that and it is growing towards the current. I have a lot of flow in my tank too. (Think that is what took out 2 Picasso offspring - they just weren't strong enough yet - SURVIVAL OF THE FITEST. - AND THE CHECKBOOK)

I also purchased a frag from Dave S. Mine is growing at the same rate. FYI, I believe this is actually Green Briarium, as I have a frag of "true" GSP that doesn't grow nearly as fast. I also have a frag of Peach Briarium, whose polyps are similar in structure to that of this coral.

Not sure :why: all I know is that this stuff is (currently) awesome.

I also got a frag from DaveS (that stuff gets around!). I found that it seems to go crazy in high flow, then slows down and the polyps shorten if you cut the flow. That's my experience at least.

Get it out now is all I can say.

Why? GSP is an excellent coral that will always be popular because of its' easy requirements and sheer beauty. People only have problems with it when they place it in the wrong areas of their tanks. If you keep it isolated to an island, you'll never have any problems with it.

I had some that I think was a freebie, grew fast, then I accidently used fresh water when I did a big water change in the tank it occupied.

My word...

The only time I've seen GSP grow that fast was when I didn't want it to.

I, too have noticed that it likes to grow INTO the current. And you're right - there's always someone that wants GSP.

I have always wondered/suspected that this stuff has some of the same absorbing properties that xenia does. Another good implementation of natural water chemistry control!

You're saying I should move all of my GSP into my 240 to control nitrates?? :)
