The Ulitimate Protein Skimmer perhaps?? or other

Recommended Posts

(edited)

I am at a loss as to what direction I should go on these acrylic tubes. I have 11 of them now and they are 84"Lx30" diameter with a 1" thick wall. They weigh about 300lbs each. Some of them are 27" in diameter. Don't know the exact number of each but, what was just a couple has turned into 11.

what would you build?

Big @$$ protein skimmer

Cylinder tank for Seahorses maybe

A Gynormous fluidized reactor? LOL!!!

quarantine tank

New these things were 9,700 to 10,300 each. Kinda pricey.

any ideas?

Jeff,

You could make some sweet tanks out of them! 24"- 36" tall would be a nice size. Then again think of the skimmer you could make! Man Jeff you luck into some cool stuff.

Lots of donated tanks for wamas raffles!!!!

Who makes skimmers for public aquaria. Would they be interested?

A very heavy set of wind chimes??

A kinetic sculpture you wouldn't want to try and stop?

The most expensive RO/DI water storage tanks in existence?

World's largest down-draft skimmer?

bob

if you didn't have a plan for them why do you have them??

if you didn't have a plan for them why do you have them??

Hey Lance, he's a reef enthusiast, don't you remember? I have bought so many things for my aquariums in my lifetime under the guise of "I'll buy it at a good price and if I can use it later fantastic"...

28" tall cylindar tanks would be pretty cool! How is the visibility through 1" thick curved acrylic though?

I know sometimes if I look through the bowfront the wrong way, it can make me a bit dizzy.

Maybe shorter top-down coffee table tanks?

LOL!!! I knew you guys would have some fun with this............I like Nitro's idea best!!!! POTATO GUN!!!! YEAH BABY!!!

lletellier, I have them because they were given to me. The person who gave them to me knew I was in the business and had no use for them and offered them to me. Yes, they were free.

zoetzer, yes that would be great for a table tank but, the logistics and fabricaton for something like that is a pia.

sixline, realistically I was and still am considering just cutting them in half with the cnc router (as I would never take that to a table saw). The 5 axis router would have no difficulty in cutting that and it would be exact and really easy to just simply glue a bottom on it.

I think for right now i am going to use them for water storage. I am just going to have the edges machined on a couple of them and stick them in my basement and store water for now. That way should the time come around for the need of a large skimmer on one of my really large setups I won't have to worry about the Euro value against the dollar. This way I can use them yet retain the versatility to make them into whatever i need in the future. To make tanks out of them I doubt I would be able to sell very many of them and yield a good chunk of change with them. Something like this has the potential of making a lot of money if I am patient and wait for the right situation.

Anyway guys, I love the ideas.............great to hear what you all could come up with. If you ahve any other ideas I'd love to hear more.

If they're pretty clear I have an idea for a tank that I've been tossing around that I'd like to run by you. The fabrication at least in terms of what I'm thinking about for the project should not be bad at all and I can do some modeling aside from the drawings I have to show you what I'm talking about.

Use them as "rollers" to get that REALLY big tank from the flatbed around to the back of the house into the basement.

Stack them together for a 3-story fish tank...perhaps surrounded by a circular staircase going from the basement to the main living area, and continuing up to the 2nd floor.

A decompression chamber for the summer house...for the recreational diver that surfaced too quickly.

A $10,000 refugium for my 75 gallon mixed reef tank.

With one-inch thick walls, it would be strong enough to put on top of the family Suburban, so the kids don't have to leave home without Nemo.

Just add a few A/C condensing units..and voila...10 cryogenic chambers...one for every family member.

And the number one thing you can do with these tubes...Seal up both ends...put a "Please Help I'm Stranded on a Dessert Island" letter inside with your cell phone number...set it out in the Atlantic...and see what happens.

Insert a SeaClone in one and seal both ends. Label the container, "Open only in extreme emergencies"

Bend them and use as overflows for your next mega-tank!

The worlds largest MJ mod?

Idea's:

(1)Build & Dontate a massive multi-stage protein skimmer for the Wamas tank at the national aquarium. Granted the skimmer will likely hold more water than the tank, but hey, I believe in over-skimming...

(2)Design a limited run product line of monster skimmers called "Titan Skimmers" for the exclusive 1000g+ folks

use them as missile bodies for your own designer patriot missiles, because everyone needs their own backyard missile, right?

(3)Heat them, and bend them into a giant donut shape, to create your own super collider ring, because there are always physicists looking for new toys to play with.

(4)Add lenses to the ends, and paint it black, to have your own giant star-gazing telescope.

(5)give one to me to play with.

(6)cut a door in one and add some plumbing, and voila - instant man portable shower.

Gives me a Charlie in the Chocalate Factory flashback. And actually, the thought of John in a 30" cylinder taking a shower and dropping the soap is NOT a good visual. :drink:

Make yourself a crawl through tank... heck, I'd buy a tank like that for the coolness factor of being able to lay down inside my tank and watch the fish swim around me!

 We will need to get NASA involved!

This can be a NAGA-NASA venture.

Get some scientist ,engineers ,biologist and space dudes.

Make a reef tank for space it will have to be the closed system with its own satellite and gyro scope

Make sure it the exact distance from the sun so it will not melt the plastic ,but not to cold.

Put it on the space shuttle and sent it up.

If it could be by the space station that would be cool.

LOL Curtis

WELL I DECIDED WHAT TO DO WITH THESE TUBES.

THE PERFECT TIMEOUT SPOT FOR MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE NEEDS ONE

Jeff,

Pimp My Reef eScape display tank

Seal up both ends with Square cuts of acrylic. Turn it on it's side (ends prevent rolling.) Cut a long 6 - 8 maybe 10 inch wide hole along what is now the top. Build two large stands, one for each side, 3 ft tall. Create a long bowed acrylic rod as a support and drill out some rocks, slide the rocks onto the bow and put the whole thing in the aquarium. No sand. Hang a light over it. Have a sump in each stand. Put it in the middle of a room.

Loan the 1st one to me.

I set it up in a public location.

People take pictures, we all end up famous.

We sell the next 10.

Plumbing? Lights that look good? Make really SURE it is good and stable; put it up high enough that people can duck under it to see both sides. Would become a major attraction - especially for kids.
