  3. what were the syptoms on the fishes fin? sometimes parasites can facilitate a bacterial infection. ive seen parasites cause a film over the eye when a parasite is attached to it. do you have any pictures of the fish? Sean
  4. mardel coppersafe is copper sulfate heavy and stays in solution better, but has a smaller margin of toxicity to the fish. seachem cupramine is lighter as it is amino bound(cupr-amine) and tends to precipitate out more rapidly than sulfate pentahydrate. i make mine out of citric acid crystals and copper sulfate pentahydrate. id say use the mardel product and test with a red sea copper kit.....worked for me. with the mardel though it has different dosing parameters than cupramine so read the instructions twice. Cheers Sean
  5. the average life cycle of most ectoparasites is 3-5 days. if he is scratching i would treat for a total of ten days with copper. I know you said you want to avoid it but amyloodinium (marine velvet) thrives in lowered salinity. Syptoms of velvet, among others, are scratching, flicking, flashing, loss of coloration and gasing for air. copper is the only effective treatment against marine velvet. Marine velvet starts as an infection of the gills and then moves through the epithelium so watch for labored breathing. BTW trigger do very well with copper, in my experience. the other possibility is that the fish has flukes. if he has flukes rid-ich sometimes works but the best treatment for flukes are copper and praziquantel. Prazi is very safe to use with ANY fish. Treat with prazi for 5 days change 50% and treat for another 5 days. if the fish is flicking DON'T just treat with hypo, if it is velvet it will explode all over the fish and kill it quick. Sean
  6. no offense, but you didn't follow it. I don't appreciate that at all. Probably already stated, but I would put ball valves on each return. expand the intake or drain to the pump. Also, anybody else chime in and tell me if I'm wrong here, but Chewy, is there an opening at the cap on the drain for the loop...might that cause some issues? don't know never done it like that before. Fwiw I was simply drawing you a diagram on scratch paper, when you first came in asking me what was wrong, your plumbing was much worse off than what it looks like now, at least how you described it to me. after reading the rest of the thread looks like you got it nailed. Sean

  12. FWIW...I have been selling those for 60-90 bucks depending on size for three years now
  13. i had a deep sand bed of silica based sand and it was fine for the first year then i noticed some really nasty chemical issues in the system....I can only contribute it to the grain size and the lack of diffusion that occurs with fine grain silica sand. I pulled it and replaced with aragonite and all my problems were non existent in about two months...( the time i figure it took for the DSB to repopulate) Just my two cents Sean
  14. good luck to you
  15. I wouldn't change the salinity on a fish like that. leave him in hypo but use copper most definately. make sure you have a good copper test kit handy b/c cupramine tends to precipitate out quite quickly so you'll need to redose. Sean

Sean
  17. How is the gill function of the fish? Is it breathing heavily or is it gasping? I would say that looks like amyloodinium. have to treat that with copper, which might trigger or release lymphocystis which is a virus that alot of wild caught angels carry. I know people say not to treat angels with copper but copper sulfate or copper citrate are the only things that will kill marine velvet. Marine velvet actually thrives in brackish water (hypo). Sean
  18. in recogniton of the need to expand our store, we have signed a lease for a warehouse space where we will move our saltwater livestock and dry goods. so that we can hit the ground running ive been trying to build up choice specimens for propagation and working deals with dry good distributors and manufacturers so we can buy in bulk at the cheapest prices possible. 22. parasites can live in the aquarium without you knowing... for example with the turbellarians, they have been found in the gill tissue of otherwise healthy fish. Also, not all turbellarian species cause hyper-melanization or dark spots. just trying to offer my knowledge on the subject dave- determining the hows, whys, and whats would require a timeline that only you would know. i cannot say why your fish wouldn't have it, maybe its not in your tank? The formalin/FW bath works very well...keep the fish submerged for 5-10 mins. if the fish becomes lethargic or loses equilibrium or stops moving tap the container, if they don't move take them out and place them back into the tank. Sean
  23. black ich or turbellarians are free living and free swimming ecto parasites. there life cycle is similiar to that of white spot. howver they differ at the larval stage. when an adult turb reaches a certain size on the fish it will drop off onto the substrate or rock or whatever and continue grow for a couple of days all while brooding more than 100 larvae inside of it. fresh water baths over the next week will work. I have even done freshwater with rid-ich mixed in which seems to be more effective. Be care with rid-ich...too much causes respiratory shock in all fish!! another good thin to do is temporarily if not permanently instal a uv sterilizer. and also do water changes with a gravel vacuum to hopefully siphon any adults and larvae off the substarte. Sean
