  1. jenn ill answer your question firsst cuz its easy. yes it is bad if you expose denitrifying anaerobic bacteria to alot of oxygen it will kill it. so if you are trying to keep that bacteria in your sand ditch the gobies. as for the main topic there are several possibilities here. i am very experienced with nitrate problem since i have battled them for years. i like to feed heavily for fat fish but from what you describe sand sifting animals wont help you anyway. first because sand sifting can refer to things that eat the bacteria you wish to culture in your bed. second because unless you have uneaten food which is deteriorating on the bed then it wont help you there. test source water and grow and harvest macroalge from your refugium. start there
  2. yea i appreciate your advice on this. so i have a 1.5" bulkhead in there now. im gonna put on some tape and do a leak test today. cross your fingers please
  3. well i would normally agree with you. time is a factor right now. thank you guys for your input. i ended up modding the fitting with my new dremel. now it is a 1.5" fitting. so i am nearly down with all of this.
  4. mine is 1.25" but yes i see what you mean. i will replace it and see if that solves it. thanx guys
  5. yea its the original so i made need to do that. what size bulk head did you use big country? mbvette, it is on the side facing me which now that i think about it is an issue as well. dont know why that is.
  6. i am running plumbing from my sump to a 125gal refugium on the other side of a small room. this was difficult to plan but i was able to complete this task. the issue is with my sump. its a good thing i have a concrete floor because it is leaking water all over the floor. i tightened the adapter thinking that the issue was resolved. it stayed dry for about 2 days and then bam! more water. after a closer look i realized that the rubber ring is not holding so i will likely need a new 11/4 bulkhead. my question is that i was looking at the flex seal stuff to further seal that leak. does anyone have any experience with liquid rubber products and their relative efficacy in this application?
  7. i would say a day here and there with no light willl help in addition to other strategies
  8. you said you run gfo, what are your test kits saying the po4 level is? what are your nitrate levels? these two parameters almost always explain algae outbreaks
  9. i only spoke to the one guy but they both seemed nice. if my wife wasnt waiting in the car i would probably still be there running my mouth. these guys are knowledgable, curtious, and no pressure sales which i love. i will definately be going there again.
  10. well generally you can add males of different species the way that you are asking but some species are more aggressive than others. withe examples you left i would say add the lubbocks first and the scotts last in terms of agression and max size.
  11. i appreciate suggestions. what makes your recommend that size though? i dont mind driving to herndon though.
  12. thanx L8 i appreciate that and i also agree with your point. how much do the drill bits usually cost. does someone have a 1" drill bit i can borrow and preferably some assistance.
  13. with no experience i am a bit apprehensive about trying it myself. there arent any glass shops that will do it?
  14. you are correct about my attentions L8torise. you also make a good point. where is a goo place to get my tank drilled in the dc area that doesnt cost too much
  15. i have an undrilled 125gal. that i want to use as a refugium. i have 1 u-tube overflow but i am not familiar with how these work. i want to run water from my rubbermaid sump to the tank and back. the sump is under the display and the 125gal. is to the right of that by about 2 or 3 ft. when facing the tank.
  16. i am looking to grow phytoplankton again and would like to obtain it locally if possible. i would like to grow nanno and another species. does anyone know of s source? thank you.
  17. there was a tiny space that i covered up where the eggcraate had broken. its covered now though.
  18. i have a pair of flame wrasses. the other day i noticed that the male was missing. there is some agression but i didnt think it was enough to kill him. well i was doing some maintenance today when i saw him in my sump. i was glad to see him alive but getting him out was going to be tough. well everytime i would attempt to catch him he would jump which i figured wasnt very good for him but what could i do its a horse trough. so i scopped him up after he jumped about 4 times hitting the bottom of the tank each time. he was disoriented and easy to catch at that point. once i put him in the tank i noticed he was stuck on the net which is weird because the net has a very fine mesh. when i dislodged him he was kinda floating on the current and his body was kinda shaped like an S. of course the yellow tang decided this would be a great time to be a ******. so i cut the lights off and i am hoping he will recover.
  19. depends on ambient temp as well. i have 3 300 watt heaters and a 250 watt and that isnt enough because the room is cooler. so that is a factor
  20. thats true. i wish i thought about that when i was filling that thing with water. right now i have 3 x 300 watt heaters and the tank is right next to the furnace and it isnt enough. i bought a space heater down there as a stop gap while i wait for the new heaters. never thought heat would be the problem but i wont complain because i spent 80 dollars on more heat not 800 to cool it down.
  21. i thought i remembered seeing a program to keep up with stats and the like but i have not been able to find it. does anyone know what i am talking about and where i can find it.
  22. never have heat problems down there. even at 90 and up so thats good. one sps coral i just got didnt like it at all but other than that they are ok. although i think you guys are right about the corals. i see some slumping a bit.
  23. i have had a temp problem in my basement in the winter since i set it up. today i walked down there and the temp was 73.6. that is the lowest i have seen it. i know it should be higher and i have ordered 3 more jager heaters to that end but, i am more surprised that no one seems to be bothered by this.
  24. i just went out there saturday but i missed you dr. mac
