A Glass canopy hasn't been an issue with lighting. But it has in terms of breaking! I have had 2 break,crack or chip. I have been wishing for acrylic tops!

Have you tried placing it and then carefully putting a curved rock 1/4 of the way on top? This provides shelter for them to attach and to withdraw into. Until mine settled, which can take a couple of weeks, it liked to hide in a crevice.

That creeps me out! Wow! Wow! Call the guy and ask if you can have one of his rocks but set it up in another bare bottom QT tank! When done throw away/put the rock outside!

I have not had any issues with cats! Lol! But I would definately train young children to not throw baseballs balls or swing bats or golf clubs near the tank, secure your fish food pellets, and have a means of securing your lights so they don't fall into the tank! For teens, I would recommend rough housing in another area. :-) Many folks do not like acrylic tanks for its scratchability, but for having children around I love acrylic! From experience softballs, bats, bumps and flying objects don't cause it to explode or crack when hit. We also try to involve ours by asking what they would like to see in the tank. It has helped them to see it as something to watch and care about to a small degree. Hth! Forgot to say +1 on hiding EVERYTHING! I don't run a sump because I can't enclose it. So I keep it simple. Any open container,sump,lid, is an invitation to play.

Downstairs, well, my family thinks it is a place to put unwanted stuff around it and I haven't found a convenient hiding place for extra buckets,salt and my little QT tank. Sounds odd but try meat tenderizer on it like you would for a bee sting or anti-itch/triple antibiotic cream with pain relievers. I have also taken antihistamine like alavert to help it not itch.

+1 on the battery backup! I have a 55,20,45 and each has a battery backup. On the 55 I run 2 for a couple of hours then switch it around to the other tanks.

Inna, will you be home around 10 am? I can take the glass cardinal and anything else that would fit into a 45 hex and I have a 20 long that can fit a few things for a couple of days. I can hold something too. If Forrest wants the glass cardinal, I can hold it for her.
