ddouglass May 19, 2015 May 19, 2015 So I am making a sump. I am using my 40 gallon breeder. I need to make baffles, what thickness do I need to make them. Also could I use acrylic or do I need to stay with glass since it's a glass aquarium?
fishgate May 21, 2015 May 21, 2015 Only use glass - check out this thread (mine) I put in the sizes that I used. All glass is 1/4" fully finished edges. 1 piece of glass 17 3/8" x 10 1/2" The height of this piece is dependant on how much depth your skimmer requires ($14)3 pieces of glass 17 3/8" x 9" ($42) http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2270518&highlight=how+to+make+a+sump

Jason Rhoads May 22, 2015 May 22, 2015 Do not use acrylic. I made that mistake before; it will eventually bow and break free from the silicone you use to hold it in place. I think the glass I used in my 30g sump is 1/8" (whatever size is commonly used for windowpanes will be fine). Lowes should be able to cut you all the glass you will need for baffles, but be sure to measure twice and cut once

Taking 2 hours to clean it would be worth it if it was what you needed... I know when I price them I want it gone, so it will be cheap and I'm not putting any extra time into it... That's a deal to me
treesprite May 25, 2015 May 25, 2015 My sump is in a 40 breeder. I made my baffles longitudinal and finally stopped having a plague of microbubbles. Then put in a perpendicular wall with a hole drilled in it for overflow from main area, so that it is as if the refugium is in a separate tank. The output from the skimmer goes over the baffle rather than back into the main section creating bubbles.

Also, I used carbide block to smooth the upper edges the glass.
ddouglass May 26, 2015 Author May 26, 2015 Thank you all for the input. I went with 1/4 in glass. Local store is cutting it for me and I'm buying there glass. For 4 things of glass it's not too bad and I don't have to sand it. I have the GE I ready when I go pick them up

WheresTheReef May 26, 2015 May 26, 2015 Make sure you consider the skimmer footprint before you put the baffles in. Might need to steal a couple inches from the return pump section.

ddouglass May 26, 2015 Author May 26, 2015 Looking good! Be sure to post a pic of the finished product I sure will

ddouglass June 5, 2015 Author June 5, 2015 What store and cost if you don't mind posting? Looks good I went to circle glass on route 29 in Fairfax city to get the glass for the baffles cut. They did an awesome job. Cost me for 4 glass panels 40 dollars.

Jason Rhoads June 19, 2015 June 19, 2015 I have that same problem when trying to upload pics directly from my phone. Sump is looking good!
