Neto November 16, 2014 Share November 16, 2014 So long story short, tried to remove a blue mushroom from a frag plug and it squirted my eye! I immediately felt my eye was burning even after being rinsed for minutes with tap water... Im now in the ER being treated... I learned my lesson, wear gloves and glasses whenever working on corals... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Incredible Corals November 16, 2014 Share November 16, 2014 I suggest not just glasses but a face shield. They are fairly cheap at Home Depot around $15. Don't want to worry about your mouth, nose, etc.

sen5241b November 16, 2014 Share November 16, 2014 You sure it wasn't the salt water that made your eye sting? I've never heard that mushrooms are poisonous.

DuffyGeos November 16, 2014 Share November 16, 2014 Sorry to hear this happened to you. I wish you a full recovery. I think our hobby needs to take messing with corals a little more seriously. If we look at the number of members that have gone to the hospital (or should have gone) for inhaling a toxin, or getting something sprayed or rubbed in their eye, for the total number of members it is pretty high. I myself never wore any safety equipment until recently. I now have different types of rubber gloves, respirator for gases, a full face shield, and a pair of wrap around safety glasses. I don't wear them all the time, just depends on what I am doing, but I have different levels of protection. It is just like a carpenter who deals with pieces of saw dust and flying wood all the time. I still see guys that don't wear safety glasses. Should they- yes, do they think nothing will happen to them so they don't need to wear them...yes. Josh- Showing what protective gear I use (in case of nuclear fallout or fragging palys) and the size of the fish I am going to put in the tank behind me. zygote2k November 17, 2014 Share November 17, 2014 easy answer is to not have palys at all in the tank. mushrooms squirt water all the time and I've gotten it in the eye before. as always, rinse your hands really well in the tank after working on corals and such. If you're really concerned, wash them with soap after your done. I make sure all broken skin is covered with a bandaid before doing reef surgery. don't do strange things like frothing the water in any circumstance. my biggest concern is when you reach into the overflow box and one of those sharp calcareous tube worms breaks off in your finger.... londonloco November 17, 2014 Share November 17, 2014 (edited) A few years back green mushrooms had overtaken my 120g. Deciding to get a handle on them, I tried to remove them by scraping them off of the rocks. Like you, one squirted me directly into my right eye. A few hours later, the pain worsened enough to send me to the ER, who sent me home with pain meds and eye drops, also suggesting I go see a eye doctor, which I did, the very next day. Examining me, he saw "microscopic cannon balls", hundreds of them, stuck to my eyeball. These balls stuck to my eye were not sand particles, the doc said they had some sort of "adhesive" property attaching them to my eye ball. He scraped them off but I had to go back one more time to get my eye scraped again to get rid of them all. I feel for ya buddy, the pain was ALMOST as bad as labor. thakki November 19, 2014 Share November 19, 2014 Wow...I can't believe all these comments and experiences from fellow reefers...I thought only zoa's are toxic and we should be careful around them...looks like its not worth taking any chances working with any coral without proper safety measures. Glad to have come across this thread. Good to know and hope you get better.

YHSublime November 19, 2014 Share November 19, 2014 Glad to hear you're doing better! For those of you that are planning on not keeping zoas and mushrooms, or anything that you think might potentially be dangerous, here is some perspective (my opinion.) With anything, exercise knowledge, best practice, and safety, and you should be OK! You wouldn't use a chainsaw to cut up a log without goggles, nor should you cut softies without using eye protection. You wouldn't mix a tub of ammonia and bleach in your bathroom, nor would you try to boil a paly rock on your kitchen stove! Wash your hands before and after working on your tank, use the proper safety equipment, and educate yourself of the potential dangers of some of the corals we keep. If after all of that, you would feel safer without "X coral" in your tank, then make that decision!
