scott3569 August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 So I am seriously considering shatter heaters, such as the aqueon or cobalt..NOT because I have an issue, but to prevent an issue..I have enheim heaters right now.. So in your opinion whic shatter proof heater should I get?? which one do you use??
wildcrazyjoker81 August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 Ehiem say they are shatter proof. I had a marineland crack and explode on me in my 55 a couple of days ago. Lost all my inverts, and 10 corals or so. You could just get the titanium ones.
mling August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 I too am looking for a new heater. I am thinking of the Cobalt but I am not sure what material it is made out of. I know it is not titanium since the manual say you have to let it cool for 15 mins before removing it from the water.. I have been leery of non titanium heaters since ... waking up to this in my sump recently ...
DuffyGeos August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 Cobalt is accurate, and if it fails it is suppose to fail in the off position.
Tracy G August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 (edited) Just a fair warning I have owned a few Cobalt Neotherms and have had issues. I used them on an apex so would power on and off so not sure if that is why. Twice I woke up in the morning to a terrible smell. The first time I thought the house was on fire and I went running to see what it was. Found the root of the smell and figured maybe it was the heater. Put my hand in the water to check it and it lit me up. It melted and released a terrible toxin in my water. My skimmer went nuts and I lost some coral. It was never out of the water was always submerged and clearly failed in the on position. I got that one replaced (I was using 2) and a few weeks later (and some dead corals) I woke up to that same smell. It happened again.... I now use Ehiem Jäger and love them. Never had any issue. YHSublime August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 .... I now use Ehiem Jäger and love them. Never had any issue. +1, but my experience is short. You should replace your heater often and provide regular maintenence as well to ensure everything is running as it should be.

mling August 8, 2014 August 8, 2014 I too like the cobalt neotherms...very resilient.. fyi .. I just bought 2 Cobalt 50W from petsolutions, ( http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Aquarium-Heaters/I/Neo-Therm-Heaters.aspx ) May be a miss price but I only paid $25 each. For some reason the 50W are more than 50% off. I needed 100W so the 2 50's was just nice.
scott3569 August 8, 2014 Author August 8, 2014 I have enheims now, but they are glass I can't see how the can claim they are shatter proof if they are glass.. I ws looking at the cobalts, but I certainly don't need them melting in my tank!! LOL sorry about the luck on that one..
zygote2k August 9, 2014 August 9, 2014 I've seen 2 Titanium heaters explode or open up. Cobalts haven't been around long enough to pass judgement.
flooddc August 9, 2014 August 9, 2014 Titanium failed too! I was sitting on my home office and heard some sizzling sound. Went and check and it was from my tank and pin point to the heater. No loss! Nonetheless, it's shatter proof!
