AlanM January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 (edited) Dead turbo snails smell awful, and that stench stays on your fingers even if you only touched the shell and washed your hands three times with soap and super hot water. Edited January 30, 2014 by AlanM
st9z January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 Eew try rubbing with some lemon. That usually gets any seafood smells out.
Jim Mc January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 I had a nice smart ass reply all ready to go about wiping your hands somewhere that would "replace" the smell. I feed mine to the nice hitchhiker crab that now is my garbage disposal in my sump.
Coral Hind January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 I agree the smell is terrible! A dead anemone is very close to being just as bad. I like the coffee and lemon ideas. I'll have to give them a try.
AlanM January 30, 2014 Author January 30, 2014 I threw it in my annoying neighbors yard, by the way. Mwahahaha
sen5241b January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 (edited) I use one of these: "New Stainless Soap Steel Eliminating Bar Kitchen Odor Smell" Edited January 30, 2014 by sen5241b
Origami January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 I use one of these: "New Stainless Soap Steel Eliminating Bar Kitchen Odor Smell" Does that actually work well? I've seen these offered for years, but never looked into them. Dead turbos - especially the really big ones - are awful smelling. Even just pouring the water out of the empty shell of a recently dead turbo will make you wince. My sympathies.

It worked pretty well when my hands smelt like garlic.
steveoutlaw January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 Live turbo snails smell just as bad. I had one get stuck inverted in my external overflow and it stunk up the whole house before I was able to figure out what it was. The wife was really happy about that one!!

I had one get stuck inverted in my external overflow and it stunk up the whole house before I was able to figure out what it was. The wife was really happy about that one!! There's been a faint but foul smell from my fish room the last two days. I came up with nothing last night. I now have something to look for.
AlanM January 30, 2014 Author January 30, 2014 "faint but foul" is not how I'd describe it. I'd describe it as closer to "cat barfed up a mouse behind the couch a week ago". I had no idea that live ones smell terrible too. Maybe my guy was still alive when I tossed him out into the cold. His door was shut and he'd been in the same spot for 3 days after laying on his side on the sand for a day before that with his foot looking weird. I'm starting to recognize the smell of acropora from pulling coral out of bags or out of the tank to glue on to the rocks. Now I know some of why fish stores smell how they do.
John Ford January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 The skimate kicks my butt when a snail is dead in my tank. It always stinks but it's a whole new stink when I lose a turbo...
OcalaReefGirl January 30, 2014 January 30, 2014 I love that you threw it in your neighbors yard! That made me smile =)
