Sorry for all the new topics. I'm googling and not getting answers.

I've always loved Greek pillars. I was wondering what would be any bad side of placing one in a saltwater tank? It would be just base. Non coated or glazed. Ceramic. Similar to this. I may break it and sand the edges to get it a ruin look. Or roll it around in reef safe epoxy and sand or crushed coral.

Will it leech anything ? Or cause any swings or a cycle or anything ?

My fear would be that some decorative ceramics can have a lot of lead in it. You could coat it with a sealant first which would help.

I agree that it may not be aquarium safe. I know you like to DIY but in this case it may be better to just google 'greek column aquarium' and choose an actual aquarium decoration.

Tryin' to make it look like my tank/ a Piece outta' my book. lol... huh??? lol

uh oh they're morphing together lol

Oooh. No I wanted full sized ones like they use at weddings. I could see them, covered in algae and star polyps.

About 14 inch tall. 8 or 9 inch wide. I got a big empty space in the middle.

Like Coral Hind mentioned, some ceramics have leaded glazes. I don't know about the ceramic itself and the metals content. If there's lead or copper, it could be a problem. Without knowing, it becomes a risk factor that you would need to consider. If you do try it, you may want to soak it for several weeks and test the water that it soaked in for metals by running it through a Polypad.

Yeah I was reading up on lead free ceramics. My sister is actually very talented with pottery. I was thinking it'll be a fun project I like DIY stuff. Supposedly my craft store has organic clay. Without lead and other stuff in it.

Why not fill the space with rock? Seems like an easier solution.

I don't want to cause a mini cycle. Supposedly lead free ceramic the kind used for bio rings won't cause any mini cycles and will become live after a while....

I think this is an interesting idea, and one that is not often done. When it is covered with something like GSP or Zoas it will look really cool. Like a pillar from Atlantis.

Exactly what I'm going for. Some hair algae waving. Hehe a foot tall. Maybe 2. Edited by Joshifer

Yea sounds neat and different. I'm not artistic enough to pull it off it would end up looking like a hurricane came through. You can have the last bit of my GHA free of charge because I'm just that nice.

What is GHA? (Still new)
