Question for all..

Would I be able to put a BTA in this tank, or is a 30 gal too small?

How do you like the Innovative Marine 30? I love those tanks.

You definitely run the risk of it stinging other things while it gets situated. And you have a lot of very pretty things in there.

Looks great! More pics!

That's what I figured with the BTA. Moving around and stinging other corals. Just want something for the clowns to host in.

Looks great, my clowns host a large frogspawn in my 90.

I have both a frogspawn and large torch. Maybe one day they will host in one of them.

The IM tanks are great. Really like them. I just grabbed the tank itself since it's cheaper that way at a LFS. Usually they sell a light with them, but the light is worthless IMO.

The only thing I do not like about the Nuvo tanks is their stock filter media. Definitely go with InTank's, and they also have a fuge to fit as well.

Also forgot to add I am using an Avast ATO for topping off.

My clowns hosted my Frogspawn as soon as they moved tanks, it was bizare. Nice looking tank!

Some updates with a FTS coming later..

Upgraded lighting to a Radion Gen 2

Added Neptune Apex Lite

Added IM Skimmate Skimmer

Added more Cerith, and Nerite snails for diatom control - they do a wonderful job!

I lost one small Acro frag since March, but everything else is growing(SPS/LPS). I consider that a win since we had our first child born on March 28. Life has been busy, and tank was put on the back burner. Now that the little guy is becoming more predictable I can focus a little more on the tank.

Clowns are doing great, and getting bigger. The diamond goby and candy pistol shrimp are inseparable. Very entertaining.

Considering buying a BRS 2-part dosing system, and hooking it up to my Apex. While my tank parameters are getting along fine right now with weekly 20% water changes, I know I'll need to start dosing calcium and alk eventually as the corals grow. With the Apex controller I can set it up with ease.

Speaking of the Apex - it has been great!! Best purchase I have made for my aquarium.

I am still using the glass top that came with the tank. I would like to build a DIY screen top, but the issue I am seeing is the glass is curved along the front sides. Any ideas to cover that area?

not to much you can do about the curve...which means youll have a 1/8 to 3/8 gap between the screen frame and front and sides of the tank...

you may be better of find out if the glass top is temepered and seeing is a glass place can drill holes for aeration ?

Updates-

Picture was taken a few days ago.  This birdsnest is growing at a decent rate now, and hopefully ill be able to frag it in the future for others.

Added a Royal Gramma.

Put together a DIY screen top for more air flow into tank.

Started dosing Kalk through the ATO.  Instead of using 6 tsps for my 3 gal reservoir, I am using 5.  I found that using the standard dose of 2 tsps per gallon was raising my alk instead of keeping it steady.  pH monitoring, and failsafes are set with the APEX.

That's all for now!

Nice pictures.

How's that starfish doing? Do you supplement? Does it do a good job cleaning?

The starfish is doing great. Always moving along the glass or over the rock work. I have no idea what it's eating, but it must be eating something since I have had it for 5 or 6 months now.

If anyone is interested I bought it from Richard at Exotic Reef Creations.

The only thing that gets dosed into the tank is kalk.

For filter media and filtration I have a small Refugium with chaeto, filter floss, small poly-filter, and chemi-pure elite. Also a innovative-marine skimmer that works ok, but is the loudest piece of equipment I have - which is annoying.

Too funny. I got a starfish from Jan back when I started. I don't know what it eats, but I see it every now and then trucking along at night. It's getting something to fill it's arms and legs.

A part on the skimmer that connects the airline tubing to the pump broke off while cleaning it this morning.  Looks like the tank will be skimmerless for a week or so while I get a replacement part shipped to me.

I am interested to see how the corals will react with no skimmer, and if the water parameters will stay in check during the week.  I did my weekly 5 gallon water change this morning.

Chaeto is growing like a weed back in the fuge keeping phosphates down, and the chemi-pure elite is still good.

So lets see how this works out.  If the levels stay down, and corals look good ill wait another week to start the skimmer.

  • 3 weeks later...

Tank is still skimmerless, and doing fine with just a refugium full of chaeto.

Although with my more frequent feedings the phosphate level is starting to rise. Going to run a small reactor of GFO to keep the PO4 under control.

After I returned the sexy shrimp to QR, I got a yellowhead jawfish. I put an additional screen over the top to prevent it from carpet surfing. Going to replace the existing screen for clear BRS 1/4" netting this week.

That's all for now. Pictures soon.

Sounds good! I love jawfish by the way :) and the cover is a good idea, I don't have one on mine but my tank is way deeper and my jawfish has only tried to jump once when I was cleaning...got to closer to her hole with the scraper....
