I need to prop up my reactors about 6" in the sump. What should I use to put underneath them that wont cause any issues?

(edited)

Find some acrylic risers used for collectibles (or shoe stores use them) you can usually find them on ebay... or have someone make you some with left over acrylic... will probably be cheap :) ask Adam from Artfully Acrylic

6 inches is pretty high for styrofoam,, which i normally do for an inch or so.. you could also pile up some diffuser panel/eggcrate

I just shot adam an email, he should be building my display in the next week or so. Hopefully he can use some scrap to rig something up.

But I think the pvc would work as an alternative if he doesnt have time to do it.

I've zip tied egg crate to form a strong cube in the past. The openness helps maintain flow under the support.

I have my skimmer up on a frame made of 1/2" PVC. What's nice is that if I want to change the skimmer level, all I have to do is change the length of the leg pieces.

+1. The other great thing about this is that you can make the "cube" or box whatever dimensions you want (in ~ 1 inch increments per side).:bluefish:

You can get white egg crate from the big box stores in the lighting section (lighting diffuser) and black from places like BRS.

Yeah I am drudging away as fast (and meticulously) as possible on all the builds to include yours =).

In general I also recommend the milk crate as others have suggested. It's cheap and easy for the DIYer. Custom fab acrylic risers are generally for cases where someone inparticular desires having a cleaner more, well...custom look...in their sump. But in general as most don't care much about the appearance down there and only care about the function the egg crate works great.

I've got my skimmer sitting on a milk crate in my sump also

Sorry, I'm in a giggly mood today, but this made me picture you ACTUALLY having your skimmer on an actual full square cube milk crate in your sump....man that would be one BIG sump tongue.gif.

My skimmer actually sits on an inverted milk crate in the 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank that's my sump. It takes up half the sump. The other half has rock in it. I've used egg crate to elevate smaller things in smaller sumps.

Going along with the giggly mood...

(to the tune of baby got back...)

I. Like. Big sumps and I cannot lie.

You other brothers can't deny....

someone spiking the water here in WAMAS lately? worlds gone giddy....

I heard from a little birdie about a bet that involved *someone* riding piggy back and a free taco... ph34r.gif

I don't think it's just here wink.gif

I am using a 100g rubbermaid stock tank for a sump, and yes it ACTUALLY a full square milk crate in the middle of my sump with a monster SWC 250 skimmer setting on top of it

Yeah, I wasn't really thinking about the tall rubbermaid stock tanks, but more traditional sumps ;)

Same as mine, but with an SWC 250 S2 cone on top. I've gotten away from the dual Sicce pumps, though, and have hooked it up to a single bubble blaster (3000, if I recall) for more reliable startup. It's even more of a monster footprint-wise.

Well stop posting and get working :P

I built two stands from the egg crate, the first one turned out to be more of a trapezid than a box, but the second one turned out nicely. Guess I will rebuild the other and decide if I will raise my skimmer up as well.
