You should add sunset montipora to your "orange" list. Easy, fast growing, and beautiful monti imo.

Also, careful where you put the "caps."

Well, with respect to the caps, I currently have a red cap, a purple cap, and a green "acro simplex" that grows like a cap... And I am thinking about removing them entirely. While I like caps, I don't want to lose the ability to place rics/zoanthids on the lower parts of the rock work. Haven't decided yet, but this might make sense to do?

Hope you plan to add A LOT more rock.

Funny you mention that. Here is the current aquascape (which I really do like):

I figure I have a couple of options. First, I could buy 50# of live rock, and fill in the channel we created. That would give the aquascape much more sps real estate. The other option is to reduce my SPS list from the current 18 to something less. (how many sps pieces do you think could fit on the aquascape above? - Remember they are frags and will be small for at least a year or two.)

Removing the Poci/Stylo/Caps/Simplex, and a couple others, I can get down to 16?

Sure 16 frags might fit for now, but what about the 30 on your frag rack.?

will have to sell them/trade them?

or I could mount them now and replace them 1 by 1 as I start to collect the other pieces?

What about adding some live shelf rock - perhaps connecting the torch and arch on the front right; or connecting the 2 large pillars in the back; or connecting the taller back left pillar to the arch in the front right; or connecting the large pillar at the back right to the arch in the front right? How would that look with the arches covered with SPS?

14,000+ views, Ryan!!! Why not attach those frags already? It isn't like you don't have the room. Then post close up shots. Looks great!

Ryan, what's that oily stuff on the surface of your water? Put some flow up there. Your protein skimmer is supposed to be picking that up.

Question:

I am 8 weeks into the fallow period. 4 more weeks to go.

I have talked with several people about ich and the fallow period. I'd say the response I get is about 50/50 to the following:

1. A fallow period is pointless. Ich will always be in your system, and will always enter your system, no matter how careful you are. The key is keeping your fish healthy, well fed, and not stressed, and then the ich won't become an issue.

2. A 12 week post-ich fallow period, plus proper QT of new fish (2-4 weeks long), will remove ich from the system and prevent it from re-entering the system. Even if, post fallow period, or post QT, the fish were still carrying ich, your system has the best chance of success with an initial 12 week fallow period than without.

I am starting to think #1 might be more accurate. Can I (or anyone really) keep ich out of a system? Even after a 4 week QT a fish could stay be carrying it. Did I really need to wait 8 weeks already before adding new fish? Should I wait another 4 weeks anyway?

Thoughts/Opinions?

Maybe add a fish that won't get ich easy like a lawnmower blenny. It will also help with your algae issue. I wouldn't start out adding tangs...

You made it 8 weeks. I would wait another 4, but who knows for sure if it will prevent ich completely. No harm though.

Do you have any fish in QT right now?
