Fazio92 December 21, 2011 December 21, 2011 Hey Everyone, Just looking to see if anyone has any Levamisole sitting around for use of killing flatworms. I have had them for several years now and have somewhat kept them under control using FW dips, FWE, etc... but since i am in the process of starting up my long term big display i would like to rid my tank for good of these flatworms (of course with a new QT system for future additions). I would just buy all new dry rock, but i have so much right now that is fully cultured and covered in coraline alage, bacteria, micro brittles, etc... that i would hate to dry it out/not use it. Plus I'm trying to be cost effective especially for 340gal display. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, especially if you have used Levamisole before. I have followed a ton of threads on RC, but it would be nice to have some WAMAS first hand experienced knowledge. Thanks in advance! -Anthony
Origami December 21, 2011 December 21, 2011 Never used it, Anthony. But here's a link that may be useful for sources: http://www.loaches.com/Members/shari2/levamisole-hydrochloride-1 Found this place, too: http://www.americanlivestock.com/pc-789596-56-prohibit-soluble-drench-powder.aspx
dakotasreef December 22, 2011 December 22, 2011 Do you have any livestock in the tank? Aefw or red planeria?

sportzfish December 22, 2011 December 22, 2011 Have you ever tried melanaurus or haliocheres wrasses?
Fazio92 December 22, 2011 Author December 22, 2011 Have you ever tried melanaurus or haliocheres wrasses? Forgot to mention, i've had every "flatworm eating" wrasse possible and still no success even with sixlines in there now.
dakotasreef December 22, 2011 December 22, 2011 The threads I have seen with people using levamisole have mixed reviews as far as coral health is concerned. For the sake of your corals, it might be best to try fwe. It might take a few treatments. Levamisole will work, but you might lose some corals. Either way, post your results.

FWE has proven unsuccessful for me over the past 10years and levamisole HCL is the main ingredient in FWE. Using the pure form will allow for a stronger regiment specific to my tank than FWE. I will post its outcome after a month of treatment. -Anthony
dbartco December 23, 2011 December 23, 2011 I have used it in the past with success, but you must run a TON of carbon afterwards with large water changes. Planaria hate it, brittles act very drunk and come out of the woodwork. Some brittles die. Fish seemed ok with it.
davelin315 December 24, 2011 December 24, 2011 Anthony, try Tractor Supply Company. They sell it as pig dewormer. If you can't find it there, I have a couple of old bottles of it that I have never opened. It's sold in a larger dispensing bottle as a powder, I'm assuming it's meant to have water added so I'm not sure what the concentration of the powder is.
Fazio92 December 28, 2011 Author December 28, 2011 Hey Everyone, Just as a follow-up on this topic, i was able to obtain some Prohibit (levimasole HCl) and followed the instructions as follows in the 1st post in this thread on RC http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1379099&highlight=levisole. After fighting these flatworms for 10yrs, i think i finally eradicated the entire population (minus any eggs which i will follow up treatment with once a week for the next 3 weeks, if there are any). To that note, i did not loose a single thing, nor did anything looked stressed at anytime (nems, fish, lps, softies, sps, linkias, etc...). I dosed at the 1ml/gal just as an fyi and followed up with the .3mL/gal day after. Within 2 min of dosing, ALL the flatworms were "exploding"; which made my skimmer volcano with red sludge for at least 45min. Additionally, since the skimmer pulled a significant amount of the organic material out (which i would assume contained a significant amount of toxin, which made my house reek for almost a day) and nothing looked stressed i decided to hold off on running carbon, and still have not 2 days later. I have also not done a water change (since everything looked good), because i am waiting a few hours for the .3mL/gal dose to run its course. I am very impressed with the outcome of this method and hope this may answer others questions whom may be dealing with the same situation. I will note that i think my saving grace for not causing any stress on the tank was my skimmer, as it instantly started pulling the toxins out (Reeflo Orca 200 on only about 100gal). As a side note, when i dosed the .3mL, there was no affect on the skimmate production, as i am assuming there were no more flatworms to die off and be skimmed out. See the pics below of the skimmer byproduct. Hope this helps! Best, -Anthony

Fazio92 December 29, 2011 Author December 29, 2011 A lot of people on RC are selling it under several Flatworm and AEFW threads, just run a search there.
