treesprite April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Here's a poll for you. I know there are people who would be perfectly happy without fish, and people who would give up their corals if keeping them meant they couldn't have any fish. I'm leaving CUC creatures out of the picture.
treesprite April 5, 2011 Author April 5, 2011 Oh geez... could someone fix my title typo so I don't look like an idiot?
bshriver April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 I think I would give up the fish first but luckily I don't have to because I really like my fish
FearTheTerps April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Oh geez... could someone fix my title typo so I don't look like an idiot? Well, half a coral still looks pretty good, and it will grow back eventually. But I'm not sold on having half a fish, everyone would always want the front half. Its cuter and it would keep the nutrients down since it wouldnt poop all over the place.
Chad April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Fish!! (at least I continue to tell myself this so I can bear not keeping corals in my tanks if I ever move to Hawaii...)
treesprite April 5, 2011 Author April 5, 2011 What inspired this poll... I will tell you. I am so tired of having problems with losing fish, especially when it was to a large extent my own fault. Last week I came to the conclusion that even if I lost all my fish and decided to not get any more for fear of more loss, I would still keep a tank of corals. This was surprising to me.... I think it means I really am a reefer now.
treesprite April 5, 2011 Author April 5, 2011 Where are the people whose names were in my head when I was thinking about people voting for corals?
flowerseller April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 I'm not voting because I don't want to make Forrest look like an idiot.
Origami April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 When I started out, I would have said fish. But now, it's coral. I think it's the challenge, variability and subtleties that attract me.
extreme_tooth_decay April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Fish. I have come full circle. I started out thinking "fish". Later I thought "corals". Now after everything I am back to "fish" (including inverts, etc). I don't own any corals now. All the effort for the corals just wasn't worth it for me. I've gotten far more enjoyment out of my mantis-only tanks than I ever did from corals.

marinebiologist April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Coral!!!!!!! Heck with the fish. I love my tangs but i would go strait coral in a heart beat.
extreme_tooth_decay April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 If I wanted a fish only tank then I'd do freshwater... Indeed...I left that part out when I described my "full circle"... I started with African cichlids. Then had SW fish only. Then has SW mixed reef. Then had SW fish only (with inverts, mantis). Now have large African cichlid tank and small fish only SW tank.
treesprite April 5, 2011 Author April 5, 2011 If I wanted a fish only tank then I'd do freshwater... LOL. Still, FW could fit the same question, just substitute the plants in a FW planted tank for the corals in a saltwater reef tank. I could never deal with a tank of just boring freshwater fish - the plants are what make the tank look nice, not the fish. In saltwater, though, there are so many brilliant-colored and beautiful fish that they are hard to resist.
OUsnakebyte April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 You HAVE to know which one I'd go for... INVERTEBRATES RULE! 98% of animal life on Earth!!!!!!!!!!! Fish are there solely for maintenance...
beatle April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Fish, though I'm glad I don't have to choose. I also started with fresh (African mbuna) and enjoyed them for several years before I figured I had "topped out" when they were breeding like crazy and I was raising fry. I also had a nice planted tank going for a about a year. I enjoyed it until it became too much work to keep looking nice. Even fast growing corals have nothing on some plants. I had to prune and clean my planted tank on an almost daily basis. Once I reached an imbalance in nutrients, plague algae dominated the tank and suffocated everything in it. Eventually I could not grow anything and sold it.
