Aiptasia X Joe's juice Stop Aiptasia
bshriver October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 (edited) I have done boiling kalk water. It works if you can get it in the mouth. I prefer the copper band method now though Less work and more fun to look at. Kiss all fan worms goodbye though when using a copperband. Edited October 1, 2009 by bshriver
Jan October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 Boiling RO/DI water method works great for me. I boil water in a micorwave. Shoot the water into the aptaisia until it falls off. I take the rock out of the tank first and do this over a bowl or a pail. Works great for me. well i have a few i need to kill and was wondering if anyone has tried the folloing bottles, i would try a peppermint shrimp but i have a coral banded and the last time i got some the banded had a nice expensive meal lol. El Camaron October 1, 2009 Author October 1, 2009 i cant take any of these rocks out though, and where can i get a seringe to get this stuff in their mouths?
Almon October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 i cant take any of these rocks out though, and where can i get a seringe to get this stuff in their mouths? Buy any of the above products and they will come with one. Kalk paste works great. The one's you can't inject you can simply cover and they die.
trockafella October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 Is there a special way to inject..? I feel like they always come back.. I only have 1 in the tank in its in the middle of a large sps colony that I dont want to break up, but if thats the only way then so be it..
El Camaron October 1, 2009 Author October 1, 2009 the reproduce fast, thats for sure. ill be picking up the joes juice later, hope it works.
extreme_tooth_decay October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 the reproduce fast, thats for sure. ill be picking up the joes juice later, hope it works. I never had one I couldn't kill with Joe's juice. I killed hundreds of them. An odd one now or then might require 2 or 3 tries. Easy to use (no boiling, etc required), effective, lasts a long, long time...comes with applicator. Great stuff.
Fazio92 October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 Have you tried peppermint shrimp? There is a specific species of peppermint that eat aptasia. I had a pretty bad infestation roughly 6 months ago, then added 6 peppermints and they were completely gone within a few weeks. Haven't seen a single one since, and i had hundreds! Also, its size dependant, the bigger the aptasia the bigger the shrimp you need to actually attack it. I got several very large and several sm/md. Hope this helps! Good luck Good old biological control!
trockafella October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 I had a few small ones in the past that the peppermint shrimp ate, but they wont eat the large ones.. I hate those darn things..
ReeferMan October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 kalk paste with vinegar. shoot it on it and watch it melt away
epleeds October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 i like aptasia x over joes juice. just seemed to work better for me. one thing you need to remember, when you use the syringe to put the product over the aptasia, make sure you cover the entire disk and try not to poke it with the tip of the applicator. if you do, it will spray all sorts of eggs that will reproduce all over your tank.... ask me how i know that.....then you got to go hard core on them with a copperband and a dozen peps to take care of the army of aptasia. One thing else, if you see a few of them, there are probably some others that you can't see. thats why the peppermint shrimp are good for those...
El Camaron October 1, 2009 Author October 1, 2009 i need to get my coral banded shrimp out of the tank before i can put any more peppermint shrimps in there, last time i tried he ahd a nice meal. Thank for all the replies guys and gals.
davjbeas October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 Definately Aptasia - X from red sea. Will kill aptasia, majanos, shrooms also. Has 2 different style of syringe attachment. David
steveoutlaw October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 I had a few small ones in the past that the peppermint shrimp ate, but they wont eat the large ones.. I hate those darn things.. That's why you kalk paste them......to kill or shrink 'em down. Once they're small, the peppermints will take care of the rest.
davelin315 October 1, 2009 October 1, 2009 I have never understood some of the methods out there. My thoughts are that there are two ways to kill these, biological which means something is eating them, or some chemical approach that disrupts their internal biology and disintegrates them without danger of just causing them to spread. For me, the way to go is to inject them with some fluid that is a signficantly different pH. I have injected them using a syringe and hypodermic needle with B-Ionic, I believe the alkalinity part, and they dissolve and don't come back. My number one method is with a combined approach of chemical and biological, but if you go strictly from a chemical standpoint, if you disrupt their internal pH they will melt away and not come back, at least in my experience. Something like kalk and vinegar combined is pretty much reducing the solution to a neutral liquid with a lot of bioavailable calcium carbonate. Not that this doesn't work, but I think it's much more effective to inject with one or the other, the combination, at least in my mind, neutralizes the effect of both.

El Camaron October 2, 2009 Author October 2, 2009 awesome, i picked up the aiptasia x after work, im about to got try it. Thanks a lot guys.
El Camaron October 2, 2009 Author October 2, 2009 WOW, i am a beliver in this product, these things seemed to implode and melt right in front of my eyes. the 4 bigger ones i had are all gone, im sure there is one or two small ones i missed but i will look again tonight.
epleeds October 2, 2009 October 2, 2009 you might want to think about taking the coral banded out and putting in 2 or 3 small peppermints. especially if you don't recall how the aptasia got into your tank. With ones that size, there are probably babies hiding in the underparts of your rock that you will never see. the peppermints will hunt them down and take care of them forever. I literally had hundreds of them in my tank. Went thru 4 bottles of aptasia X in about 3 months. then I got a nice copperband and 6 peppermints. Have not seen an aptasia in over 2 months...
Fazio92 October 2, 2009 October 2, 2009 +1, i have used all those treatments to "melt" them away before too, but they eventually come back unless you have a natural predator to feast on them. From my experience, peppermints were my best investment. I would actually watch them at night pick at the aptasia and pull them out of the tiny rock crevices! It was a good feeling knowing that they were being taken care of, without adding chemicals to my tank, that only temporarily fixed the problem.
Fazio92 October 2, 2009 October 2, 2009 Also the problem is that they can preform sexaul and Asexual reproduction; where they can also preforming budding at the pedal. More then likely the chemicals that melt them away, only attack the tenticles and tube, which are not requried for reproduction; hence why they more then likely will show up again in a few weeks/months.
El Camaron October 2, 2009 Author October 2, 2009 he is so hard to catch, i will have to grab him at night when he comes out more but i definitely need his butt out of there. I did treat a few other small ones and saw one more tiny one i missed but not too worried about those yet, i am just happy this product worked that good.
