trockafella April 2, 2009 April 2, 2009 Are they extremely hard to keep..? Interested in them, but would like some others opinions.. And yes Rob, even yours..
jason the filter freak April 2, 2009 April 2, 2009 i have 3 in my tank (dif kinds) all are doing well with minimal care
ctenophore April 2, 2009 April 2, 2009 Photosynthetic ones are pretty much as easy as any soft coral. They also tend to be brown. Non-photosynthetic ones are the pretty ones but are far more difficult to keep long term as they require frequent feeding of specific food particle sizes. Some are easier than others, but generally they are on the difficulty scale next to dendronepthya, scleronepthya and similar nonphotosynthetic softies.
Stephen April 2, 2009 April 2, 2009 (edited) I have a "purple sea plume" I got from Sea Life Inc last year as a "nano frag". It's about 5 times as big as it was when it arrived. Haven't done anything to it except glue it to a rock. Edited April 2, 2009 by Stephen
zygote2k April 2, 2009 April 2, 2009 I just got a frag of some purple sea fan from David Beasley. I glued it to a rock and it seems to be fine. Purple skeleton with brown polyps.
ctenophore April 3, 2009 April 3, 2009 I have the purple one with brown polyps too. Pretty much any gorgonian with brown polyps or stalk means it's hosting zooxanthellae and therefore photosynthetic.
lancer99 April 5, 2009 April 5, 2009 I love gorgonians, and while the photosynthetic ones may not be spectacularly colored, IMHO they can look pretty cool: Cheers, -R
Sugar Magnolia April 6, 2009 April 6, 2009 I have a photosynthetic one that I've had for over 5 years now. It's one of my favorite corals in the tank.
Jan April 6, 2009 April 6, 2009 (edited) I'm a newbie. I purchased a purple ribbon gorgonian, like the ones picured in the replies here, about 2 weeks ago and it's doing great. Nice growth so far. Edited April 6, 2009 by Jan
trockafella April 7, 2009 Author April 7, 2009 I am sold, I think i am gonna get one here in the next couple weeks.. Thanks everyone..!!
motti April 8, 2009 April 8, 2009 i have a red Gorgonian, it's definitely one of the prettier pieces in the tank, unfortunately it only opens once every couple of days. but man when it opens it's amazing, it has those big white polyps, against the red-Burgundy stems.... AMAZING!
