extreme_tooth_decay December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 My mantis had a truce with the fiddlers for a while, but a few days ago, this fiddler threw it's shoes at the mantis, and then the fight was on. This fiddler is significantly bigger than those in Crustacean Wars II and III, but still not one of the giant ones. Working my way up.

dzekunoi December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 Oh boy, fiddler did not stand a chance. What size of the tank the Mantis live in? I've been thinking about getting one for awhile now.
vaironman December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 Wow. First smack and the big claw broke right away. Awsome!

I've been thinking about getting one for awhile now. Hi Inna, Right now he is my fuge, which is a 40 BR. It's way too big. He hardly ever leaves a 12"x12" area. It seems common to keep them in 12/14 nano/biocubes. Especially the smaller ones. I am currently downsizing. I am going to set up one or probably more mantis-only tanks. Right now, since I have a nice stand for one, I'm thinking I'll use a 20G tank for my first one. I'm thinking I'll use a simple HOB power filter for carbon, no sump, weak lighting (like normal output fluorescent), and maybe a small HOB skimmer like a remora (or maybe not). flowerseller December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 How bout a Chesapeake Blue Crab . My exact thoughts. Those claws will be back first time it molts. Oh yeah, no more molting. Can we get a cam inside the cave please?
extreme_tooth_decay December 16, 2008 Author December 16, 2008 One of the folks who came over to my house recently to capitalize on my downsizing said he once put a blue crab in with a huge trigger. He said the fight did not go well and he had to crush the crab to keep it from snuffing out the trigger. On the other hand, I saw a vid on youtube (I think Chip said he saw it too) of a mantis vs. blue crab, and the mantis did win after a while. tim

extreme_tooth_decay December 16, 2008 Author December 16, 2008 This is the best one so far: That's the one I was talking about. Note tank size and rounded corners. Looks like a nanocube.
capsfan December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 I love these videos. If you do eventually go to a small blue crab that would be pretty cool. I wanna see a really big fiddler first though.
jason the filter freak December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 (edited) v.s. lobster? actually what I think would be more fair is a very large hermit (one of those orange ones) that has a decent shell for defensive purposes Edited December 16, 2008 by jason the filter freak
extreme_tooth_decay December 17, 2008 Author December 17, 2008 To show how fast the attack is (or how slow my camera is), here are 3 consecutive frames from the filming of Crustacean Wars IV: Missed the whole thing!
davelin315 December 17, 2008 December 17, 2008 Those blue crabs are vicious... I was near the bay fishing off a friend's dock and caught one that was around eating size. I tossed him up on the dock to show the kids and put my foot on it to hold it still. I then stuck my fishing rod handle down near its claws to get it to latch on so it didn't grab my toes and it cut clear through the cork handle to the rod itself. I know, cork is not that strong, but it's claws were like scissors and sliced clean through. Considering how quickly it closed those claws and how hard it hung on when I tried to get it off, I wouldn't do a blue crab in there unless the mantis was huge...
