lanman September 27, 2008 September 27, 2008 would you buy an acro frag/colony knowing the frag/tank was infested?i know u can treat them with interceptor but would you take that risk?what are your thoughts? It would have to be VERY special, and VERY cheap... If I found a 6" diameter purple bonsai colony with redbugs for $20 - I'd set myself up some kind of a quarantine tank just for that coral, and try to kill them. Otherwise, I don't think I want to endanger several thousands of dollars worth of corals, and possibly give infested frags to other people. bob
Almon September 27, 2008 September 27, 2008 Knowing you have red bugs is half the battle. Treat in a quarantine tank. And like Bob says, you may get a discount.
johnnybv September 27, 2008 September 27, 2008 would you buy an acro frag/colony knowing the frag/tank was infested?i know u can treat them with interceptor but would you take that risk?what are your thoughts? they are a very easy pest to treat, as long as you can get intercepter. be prepared for it to kill all crusteceons in you tank, if it does not then you did not dose strong enough... John
ctenophore September 27, 2008 September 27, 2008 Agreed, red bugs are pretty easy to treat. Interceptor kills them every time.
lanman September 27, 2008 September 27, 2008 I thought I saw some postings that said interceptor wasn't available anymore... bob
fishcam September 27, 2008 September 27, 2008 I went the melanarus wrasse way about this, and while I still see some, their numbers severely diminished. Eventually, I'll probably do an interceptor treatment, but idnk, none of my corals are giant colonies, and if the wrasse can keep them at bay, then maybe thats OK too. Most of this stems from my total laziness and not wanting to remove my snails, shrimp and crabs...

Melanarus wrasses are great and safe....get brave and try some camel shrimp.
davelin315 September 29, 2008 September 29, 2008 Levamisole is what is becoming scarce. Interceptor is simply a prescription product that you need to find a vet for.
AQUACO September 29, 2008 September 29, 2008 Red Bugs are running rampid in DC. I hear/see more people with problems with this little critter everyday. I know of a huge local display tank that is infested with them. One reason that I dont take trade in's is this reason. I dont wanna be at risk. One bug and sales, flush!!!! It is hard enough keeping the store AEFW free as infected as the bali stuff is these days! We have had good luck using interceptor as a preventive. There is talk that a major supplement company is coming out with a Red Bug pill.... I will announce the news as soon as I get info. I recently had a discussion with a local sps keeper. He states that he uses a short quarantine on all new additions to his reef. A 5 galllon bucket, A heater, A small Powerhead, Aged Tank Water and a 6 hour interceptor bath. Not too involved and Red Bug Free! The germans are controlling coral paracites with camel shrimp. A small aquarium plumbed into your reef. Place your new coral in the tank for about 15 minutes with about 10 camel shrimp. They will devour any hitchikers. Monti and Zoo nudis, Red Bugs and Flat Worms. Good Luck and Stay Clean!

I hear that you need to be aware and careful with this treatment. Keep to the 15 minutes. Keep shrimp hungry also!

yauger September 29, 2008 September 29, 2008 If you have a need to rid yourself of redbugs shoot me a PM.
Coral Hind September 29, 2008 September 29, 2008 would you buy an acro frag/colony knowing the frag/tank was infested?i know u can treat them with interceptor but would you take that risk?what are your thoughts? No, I would not even take the chance. I had them about five years ago after doing a frag swap and I do not want to deal that again.
dbartco September 29, 2008 September 29, 2008 I usually dip, qt for a week, dip again and typically don't have a problem. Worried, do a third dip. Haven't had a recurrance that I can see in the last couple of years.
chucelli October 24, 2008 October 24, 2008 I just came across this thread.. wanted to give everyone a heads up, Exotic Aquatics in Baltimore has the bug. I purchased a blue stag frag from them a few weeks ago. Didn't see the bugs until I got it home into my white bucket. Interceptor did the trick.

chucelli October 24, 2008 October 24, 2008 did you let them know about it? no, I have a feeling the owner will just deny it and tell me off. Didn't seem like a very friendly fellow.
yauger October 24, 2008 October 24, 2008 shouldn't matter about that, just drop a note for him FYI so he can see for himself...
chucelli October 24, 2008 October 24, 2008 shouldn't matter about that, just drop a note for him FYI so he can see for himself... just took your advice. called and asked to speak with the owner. The woman who answered the phone asked me what this was about. I explained to her what redbugs were and which system the frag came out of. She said she would tell him ASAP. I reiterated the importance of this since the bugs can be spread to customer's systems. I'm willing to bet that since there is no noticeable deterioration with his corals, he will assume there's not a problem. Redbugs are still a pretty new thing to most people...
yauger October 24, 2008 October 24, 2008 At least you did the responsible thing and tell him what you found. now its up to him to figure out how to clean up his system and let others know about the red bugs... thanks dude.
basser9 October 25, 2008 October 25, 2008 All YOU need is a 30 min dip in revive from 2 little fishes.......this stuff is amazing.....have tested it on everything but afws.....all the corals in a reef tank should be removeable....a simple plastic peg or a fist sized rock will allow you to remove any coral....THIS IS THE SINGLE THING THAT HAS SHOCKED ME ABOUT THE TANKS THAT I HAVE SEEN FROM WAMAS AND CMAS.You have to understand that redbugs are to sps what ick are to fish. You can easily kill all redbugs with this dip.....I have not seen 1 tank that has removeable coral or colors on there corals that are correct....My personal belief is that most reefer are afraid to dose volga/vinager/sugar and dont think ahead as they will have to move there corals to find a better spot or to dip or 2 frag.....what we need are more peggers and more carbon dosers....my 2 cents but based upon 30 years of killing my tanks off until i found the carbon light.....
DDiver October 26, 2008 Author October 26, 2008 I think this thread has gone a little off course..there is no doubt that interceptor will do the trick to rid corals of These pests... My original question was would u buy the coral frag/colony knowing it was infested.would u buy it even if u could simply rid them of the bugs by doing a dip.I have seen what these bugs can do to an infested frag and it's not pretty..so would u buy not knowing what health it is in even if it looks healthy?

Either way this is a good thread very informative. But the risk of the red bugs gets out weighed only if I have a means of removing them or controling them naturually. Then I say yes I will buy a Frag knowing it was infested.
