  1. I read in a recent thread that there were other WAMAS members here in California... clearly this club is too good to let 2500 miles get in the way! Shoot up a flare if you're in Cali! I have a tank in the South Bay!
  2. Sorry for the slow reply! Right now, I've stocked the tank, and have one SPS, a pink/green birdsnest. In the past I have done bulk reef supply two part alk and ca with dosing pumps, and manually adding mg as needed. This was on an LPS/SPS 55gallon system. I want to focus on SPS in this tank, and the guy at my LFS said that with LED's they've been seeing better tissue growth with "Restor" by brightwell aquatics. I had never heard of it, but googled around and also found the Zeovit, and Coral Colors products. I think you're all correct - for now, I dont need to do anything but water changes - but wondered what other folks do. Zeo seems pretty expensive, and the other products seem on the gimmicky side.
  3. I'm starting to put SPS in my 40BR, and while I'm used to the 2-part + Mg regimen (I use bulk reef supply's kit), I'm new to the adding of amino's and other formulas to get color growth. Does anyone else use products like Red Sea's Coral Nutrition A+B or Coral Colors ABCD? What about the Balling method/brand? Total new grounds here for me, so any info would be helpful! My Tank: 40br+29g sump, reed breeders Photon 32, one birdsnest colony now, but hopefully a future of SPS and LPS.
  4. I have had bad luck with live caught Bangai's, but maybe captive breds? The blue eyed cardinals are beauts... fish store tomorrow. Anyone else? Thanks!
  5. Hi Folks- My 40BR is ready for more fish, and I need some help with stocking suggestions! Here is the system at a glance: 40BR display, with a 29g sump. Euroreef skimmer with Sedra 3500. Mag 12 return 4x MJ1200's for circulation ReefBreeders Photon 32 light ~50lbs live rock Bare bottom tank! Current Fish: Ocellaris Clown Royal Gramma Some snails/hermits Here are some desires: I'd like some fish that spend all their time in the water column Eventually, I want to add clams and SPS, so everyone should be friendly to that! What do you think? Thanks for all feedback!
  6. Hey how are you feeling about the noise on the waveline dc3000s? I am setting up my 40br, and like the idea of a throttle-able return pump, because I need it to be absolutely quiet during the day (tank is at work) and then it could throttle up after business hours. Thanks!
  7. OK thanks all for the info. I think 1x 32 with 90 optics. will do. maybe I will get fancy and switch the optics of the red and green LED's to 120. Too bad 2x32s is way overkill, I was looking forward to being able to land a plane with my tank!
  8. Hmm. I DO Like the idea of saving some bucks, BUT how much overkill are we talkin? As in 2x would cause bleaching and nastiness such that it's just dumb to consider? Sorry for the ignorance, I've just never dealt with LED's before, and I dont want to miss out on the savings or the time spent on the hanging mechanism should I need 2x for SPS. I expect it to be about 3-6in off the top, too, so thanks for the inputs that 90 degree optics should be good for 1x unit.
  9. Thanks all. I have rejoined (only WAMAS member from Calif?) and will participate in the Evergrow/Reefbreeders group buy. Thanks!
  10. Hi all! I intend to participate in the group buy but have the following questions. If anyone would provide feedback on my proposed setup, that would be fantastic: Tank - 40br (36x18 footprint), new build, SPS/LPS, bare bottom Lights - 2x it2080's (photon 32s). Each photon 32 is 32x8in, so two would be 32x16 coverage Optics - Probably 60 degree optics, since there are 2x fixtures LED Layout - the standard Questions: 1) Is 2x way overkill for a 40br SPS? (Additionally, I like having both, in case one fails.) 2) Is the default light pattern the most diverse spread? I dont know much about this, but would want the most even across the tank. 3) Do you agree that 60 deg optics are the best for 2x units, and 90 deg for 1x unit? 4) Related to 3, what is the recommended height above the tank for these units? 5) Are the "drivers" the electronics to power the unit? If so, how much are they for the it2080's? THANKS all for the thoughts!
  11. Hi folks- ~3 years ago I sold my tank, moved to Calif, and spent my tank money on scuba lessons. But you cant stay gone forever, and WAMAS was such a great community, I thought I'd ask my new tank question: I'm setting up a 40br display, which is intended to ultimately be an LPS/SPS tank, and in the time that I've been gone, LED lighting seems to have taken off. Here's my question: Those of you with LPS/SPS tanks, is there a concensus on LED lighting compared to t5 or MH? I searched around and found that I have the following options (based on popularity and price): - AcuaticLife 36 8xlamp t5ho for $460 - 2xReef Breeders Photon 24 for ~$660 - RapidLED 40br kit, with some DIY stand for ~$500 - 2x AquaIllum Sol Super Blue plus stand for ~$900 Here's my basic setup (specific to lighting): - 40br tank - I need to have the lights sit on the tank. No hanging from above. - Flow is provided by a Hang-On-Side CS102, with returns on the other short side. - MJ1200 with magnets are also on the short sides. - I estimate that these guys take up about 5 inches on either side of the tank, so really, my lightable area is probably 24x25 for SPS/LPS, with shenanigans on the edges of that. I'm partial to the AquaticLife and AquaIllumination brands, because of their fit and finish, so I guess it boils down to: for those with experience, are the LED's worth the extra cash, or have folks with SPS/LPS stuck to t5 and MH? Thanks for your thoughts and experience! Please feel free to add anything I have not thought about!

  13. Actually, this is useful... height is important. About how high is yours? Like 36ish? Thanks
  14. Show me your tank and stand! I'm going to design my own, and would like some room underneath... something like room for another 40br, or a 29 tall and some dosing equipment. If anyone has any lessons learned or plans, I'd love to see those too! Right now, I'm thinking a very clean design with four posts, and a top and bottom. For sides, I'd like them to be removable, either via magnets or a simple latch system. I haven't given a lot of thought to staining yet, but all the wood in my apt is light. This will probably be important for the side panels, but I figure the standard 2x4 with metal reinforcements is fine for the stand. Anyone out there acre to chime in? This will be my first woodworking project so ... I'll need all the help I can get! -d
  15. The only kzoo I know of is in Michigan.
  16. Mine got to 70 once, when it was 12g and I left the fan on it for too long. Yesterday my 120 was at 72 before I realized I had removed the temp control code from my ACIII cause my thermocouple broke. opps. Hah. Both are fixed now.
  17. http://www.3news.co.nz/Man-made-shells-cas...21/Default.aspx I would suspect these would have a place in the hobbyist market as well! Who can blow glass?
  18. Home depot will (and MH's too). Just bring your bulbs to the customer service counter. (I use the one in sterling, off of the 7)
  19. I think bulk reef supply had rock for ~2.5lb with free shipping... though its not "live"... just add water lol
  20. I dont doubt it. I lost my CBB after I caught him stuck in a large SPS I have. I carefully removed him, but he was done in about an hour. He was pretty well jammed in there, and I have a friendly tank, so I dont know why he would have, apparently, tried to get to the base of the coral.
  21. I've got this problem too. The buildup is on the inside of the neck and the skimmate is on the other side in the collection cup. IME I've found that the skimmer basically stops skimming when the buildup becomes too thick (say a quarter inch) When this happens I notice a lack of skimmate and I clean the system out. I drain my skimmate daily with a timer and aqualifter, but since the buildup is on the inside, I dont think it matters what I do with the skimmate. d
