  1. Yup. Tangs need space. I had a nice Yellow-Belly Hippo Tang but had to give him up since he was getting too big for my 100 gal tank. His tank mates do NOT miss him! Now, the yellow tang (and sometimes the flame angel) get to play the role of the Alpha fish.
  2. What's in your tank? We've decided that SPS are a bridge to far. So, our reef tank has fish, inverts, LPS, and soft coral but no SPS. I know we are missing out on some nice lookin' stuff but we are trying to balance that with a level of a commitment that we can sustain. Just wondering how many other folks have NOT crossed the SPS threshold. Feel free to post replies on this. Steve
  3. Obviously, some folks use this option. I would have two concerns with a solenoid in the configuration: - the instructions with my RO/DI unit states that "It is recommended that at least 2 gallons of purified water be discarded before collecting purified water for use. If the unit is not used for several days, run the system for at least 15 minutes before collecting water." This was desribed on another post by YBeNormal @ Mar 22 2008, 04:13 PM with a link to http://www.airwaterice.com/category/.z.merlin/ and see "TDS Creep" - fear of a failure resulting in (1) turning a reef tank into a "fresh" water tank and (2) major water damage. I like the idea of a top off container with a limitied capacity (in my case case, a 5 gal but If I had the space under my tank, I would have gone with a 10 gal.) I'm very please with the autotopoff.com brand. Here is my implementation - http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?show...mp;#entry177364
  4. All I've done so far is (1) rinse several times, (2) fill with water and let sit over night. I repeated theis two more times. I'm planning to cut a hole in the center and clean/rinse one more time before using to store ro/di water.
  5. Dear Gang, This is what I have now. I wonder if it would be OK to add some Bartlett's Anthias? Steve
  6. thanks. sorry, my post wasn't clear. I have all of the above now and am wondering if there might be more capacity for fish compatible with what I have now. I do have a tank raised orchid. I learned too late that the margarita prefer cooler water. I've heard about pipe organ. I purchased this one from Dr. Mac and it is one on my healthist corals. Guess I got lucky...
  7. We now use http://www.pentairaquatics.com/products/de...algae_pads.html (the white varity is for acrylic) (Some time ago, we used a magfloat, http://www.magfloat.net/telas/pagina.php?id=5&idc=3, but a few bits of sand grit got stuck in the cleaner and scratched the tank.)
  8. I have dozens (hundreds?) of similar tiny snails. They only show up after lights out. I understand they are very difficult to differentiate between (bad) pyramid snails and (good) other types of tiny snails without a microscope or powerful magnifying glass. I was told that without a clam host (I do NOT have a clam), it is very unlikely I have pyramid snails but to check if they bother the large snails. (They do not, they seem to graze on rock for algae.) Hope you don't have the bad guys and if you do, hope it works out.
  9. I have an open loop so I have no experience with closed loop. When I orderd my 100 gal, I asked the manufacturer to double the 1.5
  10. Wondering if there are compatible fish that can be accomodated in my 100 Gal (30 gal sump/refugium w/ ASM-G2 Protein Skimmer): FISH Black False Perc Clownfish Linear Blenny Orchid Dottyback Six-Line Wrasse Blue-Green Chromis (3) Flame Angel Yellow Tang INVERTS Fire Shrimp Few Hermit Crabs Few Margarita Snails Two Turbo Snails Keyhole Limpet MISC SMALL CORALS Frogspawn Torch Caulastrea Favia Brain Pipe Organ Xenia Kenya Tree Zoanthids Green Button Polyps Green Star Polyps
  11. ditto Never heard of gravity fed skimmer before this post. I found these interesting: http://www.goodwinfamily.force9.co.uk/SKIMMER2.pdf
  12. I've been unsuccessful in attaching a Kenya Tree frag. The stalk is about as thick as my little finger but not as long. I tried gluing it twice but it did not hold. I may not be gluing right or may need additional support. I
  13. my thoughts .... http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?show...pid=186937&
  14. YBe, Very Impressive. You should change your name from YBeNormal to IBeMasterCarpenter!
  15. BTW, if for some reason 35 gal not available. I'll take a 55 but I'd prefer a 35 since space is very tight. Steve
  16. Cliff, I'd like one 35 gal. Steve Thanks
  17. Are there size estimates for the 35 gal?
  18. I just noticed some stuff inside the water exit tube of the protein skimmer. I wonder if they are tiny sponges?
  19. This is what I use --- http://basementwatchdog.com/water_alarm.htm $10 at home depot Basement Watchdog Battery Operated Water Alarm Model BWD-HWA, $9.97/EA Each
