  1. You should put where you live. Going over to a WAMAS members house to see another established tank will often give you some good ideas and I have found it to be one of the best ways to learn.
  2. Looking good. The stand is beautiful. Very nice work. What do you plan on putting in the tank? Have you thought of that yet?
  3. we lost power hear almost immediatly on the first day of the storm. I have a 5500 watt generator but only have one outlet I can run it on in the house. I don't have a master off circuit breaker. One positive is the plug on the outside of the house is my circuit which goes to the nbasement. I am using this to heat my tanks as well as a space heater. We all have had to move down to the basement for the heat as well as a neighbor with a 3 month old. This has been a real pain. The good news is our 2 cars and the truck were full of fuel so I have been getting fuel from them to run the generator.
  4. Wow I am glad you caught that. I need to take a look at mine.
  5. When I closed up my 210 I rinsed much of my sand and re-used it in my 90 and bagged left over for future use. after a couple of weeks I got a hair algea problem but got a sea hair which got rid of that. All my SPS did fine through the small recycle.
  6. If you are still looking for sand I have a bunch left that you can have. I bagged a bunch for when I finally move and re-set up my tank but left a bunch in the back. It should be fine to use.
  7. If you find that you are battling hair algea after this, I can loan you my sea hair. When I moved most of my stuff from my 210 to my 90 and 54 everything lived including my SPS but over about a month I began to have a bad hair algea problem. I got a sea hair and 20 snails and now I am back in a good place. I recomend after the move to run carbon. I doubled up because you tend to get a lot of junk that now will be in your water column. Either way should work. If you clean the sand and just keep a couple of cups un cleaned I believe you would be fine also. I think this is not a bad idea in that you will remove much of the trapped junk in the sand bed. This is what I did when I moved everything.
  8. I think the change can come from many factors. When I started in the hobby besides keeping fish alive I could only keep mushrooms alive. Now that I can keep SPS alive I much prefer building a skeleton frame of live rock and PVC and letting my live coral fill in. Previously I couldn't do this because I didn't have the knowledge to keep SPS alive. I cant wait for my next tank. I think it will look barren at first but in time the stonies just look so much nicer then just piled up live rock. Just my opinion.
  9. We lost power for a day and a half. I had my generator ready but not setup for running the house. To make a long story short I lost my flame angel which I have had for years but my kole who didn't look to happy appears better and my corals seem fine. This morning I rigged the generator to run just my 20 amp circuit on my tank and that saved the tank I believe. I am tired so good night everyone. Overall I learned what I need to do to be better prepared for next time. The power came back around 9:20 PM tonight.
  10. Wow Reading that link is very disturbing to me. So the way I see it you are either a "believer" or "denier" Sounds like a religion to me. I dont suppose any information would change Erics convictions or any of the other "believers". He holds no credibility with me.
  11. I have a custom sump from Jeff. He built it for me a number of years ago and it is one of my best pieces of equipment. Very well made and strong.
  12. I would suggest PVC cement as well. It pretty much melts the pieces together so it is differen't then a glue. I think it would work better
  13. Wow. Well let us know how things come along with the wound. I try now to remember to wear gloves but frequently I dont think about it
  14. You are welcome to borrow my truck but I will be I work weekends.
  15. Good point Mountain. I was actually a bit upset to see who it was. Are we sure it is Eric who has all the background in the reefing hobby?
  16. I have never had a problem mixing the two. As Tom says generally the carbon gets exhausted quicker so you may loose some life from the carbon. Adsorption is a slow process so I prefer to have the flow rate just enough to tumble the media so as to prevent channeling, but not much faster. From my experience the issue of breaking up will come from the GFO if the water movement is to much, not the carbon. I am installing a second reactor in line, but I am doing this as a pre-filter as opposed to seperating the media. I think the carbon in particular and the GFO will have a longer life by doing this. I will see.
  17. So Eric because you are so sure that the debate is over you have to degrade FOX news and other sources. When I want something explained to me about Calcium/Alkalinity relationship I come on this site or reef central and I can get answers. I have not yet had anyone tell me the debate is over on this relationship or I am only allowed 10 questions on this subject. I become very mistrusting when people close debate. Why demonize a news organization or other people who dont yet understand what you so clearly do? What are you afraid of? If the next time you listen to Beck or Hannity and they say something about global warming which sounds wrong to you mention that, but please, we dont need their educational background. You said: "There is no real debate only faux debate on this subject and if your source of climate change science is Fox News or any mainstream media source I suggest you do not have the ability to enter substantially into any debate." I understand you are a scientist. Coming from a scientist this comment is scary. If I presented video of people walking around and used this as evidence for creationisam as opposed to evoloution you would think I am crazy. People need to continually try to prove the theory until it becomes science fact. Until then it is a theory. You certainly dont strengthen your argument with your comments.
  18. What is so scary is that it took so long for this to come out. I believe people are getting away from Aquariareview main point. He seems to be pointing out that the so called science has been manipulated. This is outragous. Politicians are using global warming as a way to control people. The science is junk. Yes we pollute and it would be a good idea to clean up as much as possible. I came to this conclusion a long time ago. It became clear to me once I began hearing people say the debate was over. Look at all the other problems we have dealing with various kinds of pollution. Acid rain, Bald eagles going extinct because of DDT, runoff from farms, smog. Has anyone ever said the debate is over on what is causing these things? WE figured out the issue and then worked to resolve the problem. People dont end debate on something if it is still theory because the fact that it is theory means we dont have the answer. It has become more of a religion for some and they hold on to it. The problem is it is being used to control people. This is an international disgrace.
  19. Wow excellent explanation. I will read the article.
  20. Another suggestion. If you want to get some really good ideas get in touch with Boret. He has a 92 corner which is a beautiful tank and really well thought out. It is worth taking a look at.
  21. Well my estimate is about $55 a month and I am not nearly as scientific as Tom. Tom generally can only get accuracy to within .10 so he needs to work on his calculations a bit also. I figured this when I took down my 210. I think it is close but not exact. I figured electrical usage, salt, RO/DI water and filtration media which I get at a good price.
  22. I have a 5500 watt portable generator which I got used for like $250. If I need it I have it for that exact reason. I got it on craigslist. discretekarma do you have any pictures of your setup for your transfer switch. I didn't realizr HD sells them. I will stop by Home depot tomorrow and check it out.
  23. That is excellent info. I have gotten the spines in me and never would have thought of that. I will use that.
  24. Yes I did. I never saw you down at Ponce inlet though. Maybe you were a bit smarter then me. :-) Do you still fly?
