  1. BRS has a calculator http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/reef-calculator it will let you take your system volume and figure out how much to add (the first time) to get to a stable level After that you need to test. Once you see how much its going down over time you can start to dosing alk and cal. You should test Mag early, but later not as often. (adding tons of Alk with low mag is going to precipitate) I dose 22 times a day 4 oz each time of Cal and Alk on a mixed reef 90G the directions I've always been told for mag is one gallon as soon as the gallon of cal and alk run out (so I add it all at once, about once every 6 weeks) I do worry about spiking my Mag - my snails act drunk when my mag gets too high too quickly.
  2. did you buy a mated pair? or did you just get lucky? (can you "sex" yellow wrasses???) Congrats, btw
  3. I have a 90G mixed reef, it came with a Coralife SuperSkimmer 220 It has been sufficient in pulling out skum. but the impeller is giving me trouble Can anyone identify this pump from the pictures The pump seems like its working, but if you look at the impeller picture it looks like the needle has been running off-center and expanding the center hole. Can I just replace the impeller? (why did that happen?) Thanks, Matt

  5. Does Paraguard and PraziPro kill the bacteria in live rock in a QT?
  6. Am I correct that everyone has large RODI Reserviors (and some even have large pre-mixed salt reserviors) at all times? The TDS out of my rodi is below 2, but I had someone test my containers, and its almost 30 I didn't realize that RODI had a "shelf life" or does enough aggitation keep the containers TDS low?
  7. the show with the submarine capturing aquarium fish was "Fishtank Kings"
  8. When they have to use a submarine to capture them and acclimate them to higher depths that is what makes these fish so expensive for that price, I would rather put a hat on my cat and call it a day!
  9. These are usually used on Boats So Salkwater shouldn't be an issue Any car battery should do. BUT, I don't think this is what you would want to use the biggest expense there is the high water alarm that's not what you need If you just want a long term pump connect a submersible pump directly to a car battery (the car battery would last a lot longer then a UPS or a D cell battery you could also permanently connect it to a smart trickle charger so that it will recharge once lights come back on
  10. I started the tank with Filter Media from a clean tank (thank you QuantumReefs) and i used water from my DT (which was probably infected with ich) and I moved over some LR. (bare bottom otherwise) Not sure if LR in an HT is standard or not I didn't think Paragard would kill the bacteria in the rock. and I'm just using it to reduce "daily" water changes I still weekly WC when it had fish it in. so now its been 30 days since I had any fish in there theoretically there is no "diseases" left in there (combination of fallow time and treatments) fish were in there for 60 days and are doing well back in the DT. I planned to do another water change, vacuum up as much algea as I can and put in the next batch of fish I'm getting. With no fish in there currently, there is no reason for regular water changes, is there? (no ammonia/nitrate/nitrite being added to the water? Algae is taking stuff out of the water, right?) If I empty the hospital tank entirely, then I need to re-seed it with water from the DT (which was fallow for 60 days prior to getting any fish) and move over more "live" filter media, correct?
  11. So ... I set up a 20g hospital tank to treat all my new arrivals with Paraguard and PraziPro. The first batch of fish are in the DT, so the question is ... now what? Do I empty the Hospital Tank or leave it running? I assumed I should have it always ready to go so I left it running with a heater and HoB (just a pad in the there though) but now I have algae (natural light from the window) I vacuum some of it up, and I assume I can't add snails (Not Paraguard safe?) What does everyone else do??? Thanks, Matt

  13. I run a bag in the return area of my sump, it made an immediate improvement I am still trying to figure out how often to change it I think 4 weeks is about the usefullness limit. I will eventually go reactor (possibly with GFO) but this works for me for now. I haven't noticed any HLE, but I do worry about it, and wash my carbon thuroughly in RODI before putting it in the sump
  14. What happens to unwanted fish? "The discount tank" ?
  15. You really wouldn't know what X is without testing (the display) Ride, for your next trick I want to see (#clams * a') + (#lps * b') = monthly calcium/alkalinity usage I know its not that really calculable, but we can dream!
  16. Is the best way to ground the tank to put a ground wire in the water and connect it to the center screw of an outlet? or is the point to find out which device is putting out the juice?
  17. Mine weren't paired I had the goby for a year got him a new shrimp in a whole different area of the tank. Without missing a beat, they were paired by the next day I assume its a noise the shrimp makes (but then again ... wouldn't predators pick up on the noise and try to eat the shrimp?)
  18. under "about wamas" in the upper left toolbar is our "Local Fish Store Map" All the stores are on there. If you are a Wamas Member, you can read about Vendor Experiences to see what stores people like and don't like (any local fish store is worth at least a visit to make your own opinion - bad ones close very quickly)
  19. Is Bayer Pest Control considered safe? I had to do hours of research after reading this thread but everything is from 2011. Do people here dip with it? .5ml per 2 cups of tank water with two rinse cycles?
  20. on my droid, I actually use the regular web page. I think I downloaded the app a while ago, or maybe I couldn't find it, or something, but the web page does everything I need ...
  21. my 3 biggest hermits (2" shells) were banished to the sump the only crabs left in my display are much smaller hermits (3/4" shells) and some emeralds (they won't steal shells, but I am still missing a few small fish, so ...)
