  1. Hello! Just to start off, thanks to everyone in general for being so helpful! I noticed today that there is something growing from the live rock in one of my students' tanks. I'm trying to make sure it's not something I need to be worried about. I know you can get both good and bad hitchhikers on live rock, so help identifying would be much appreciated! I've attached a picture I took. From what I've been seeing online it looks like it might be a Glass Anemone, but since I'm inexperienced, I wanted to double check.
  2. Just set my 40 gal cube back up after taking a break for a year, I lost everything in the move down here (probably $2K) so I needed a break. looking for anyone that may be down here that wants to do Coral swaps or has some LR, pods to help get my tank up and running again. LFS are scarce and over priced here and making this hobby more frustrating than it needs to be lol. if anyone is down in this area and has stuff to sell/trade or donate please PM me. Thanks
  3. Hi all, I'll be moving across the country soon, and the movers will be here on Tuesday and Wed to pack all my stuff. I've decided to take my tank with me, so, I'll be taking my live rock with me. The thing is, the live rock will be stored for about a month before I can get it back into any sort of tank. So, what do I do with it? How do I store it. I want to keep it, as it is some darn nice rock.. but, I am afraid of ruining it. Need help quick, breaking down tank today B
  4. I need HELP PLEASE!!! I have had a problem with Bryopsis for quite some time now because I didn't learn the importance of quarantining new things to my tank back when I got started. I have tried raising my Magnesium levels to ~1600 and have had very mild success in conjunction with manual removal. I have also tried DinoX aka AlgaeX back before I encountered this problem to eradicate a Dino problem I had at the time. It worked with some consequences that I would prefer not to relive. So, now I am considering replacing the live rock in my tank to say screw it and try fresh. I do have a range of LPS and SPS in my tank that I can remove off the rocks that are free of the nuisance algae and some that would require some dipping and quarantine before being replaced. The worry I have is how is this going to effect my tank? I have my Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, and Ammonia levels to the point of being undetectable and I don't want to replace the current live rock with new live rock (cured live rock, from LFS) and send those levels from nothing to something killing off my Coral and Livestock. Thoughts? Suggestions?
  5. I am somewhat new to the saltwater "game", but I have been following a friend of mine who has large amounts of coral and fish at his own house. I currently have a 14 gallon biocube and I orignally had 2 big rocks in there. as the tank progressed I decided to try to touch it up for aesthetics. (i.e. break up the rocks to build a better cave to accommodate for my smaller fish, etc.) one rock broke no problem. the other rock did not break after countless efforts, even with a chisel and screwdriver. my friend came over with his industrial hammer to smash the rock, but upon attempting only a small piece the size of my thumb fell off one end. it seems to be a HUGE coral skeleton that must have somehow ended up in a batch of sold rock? my friend and I both were bewildered at the "rock". can someone help me out? maybe first of all tell me what this is in my tank? and second what I can do to maybe break it down? or do i have to find new rock for replacement if i do want to break it down? attached are some pics. i can post better pics for those that would like it if you can really help me out with my situation. the pic with light on is obviously the rock as two large pieces originally. the picture with the lights off is the one after breaking up the first rock and a flat rock i obtained from a friend. the second rock still remains as its large piece.

  7. I think I did ok with the rock placement. Not much room to work with. I'm really liking this Orphek pr 25 led bulb. The shimmer is amazing! Still lots to do, I plan to make a gravity ATO next. Any one know of a good design?
  8. Hi all - I've set up a 20 gallon QT and put some dead live rock in that I had baking outside for a month. I used RODI water, put a little bit of sand in the tank (maybe 3-4 lbs) a heater, set the salinity at 1.25, a HOB filter that came with the tank (bought from Petco) and the dead rock (i'm guessing 10 lbs). I don't plan to use it for at least a month or 2 so that it has time to cycle. The rock was live before letting it dry up outside. It's mainly rubble from my DT that I wasn't using anymore. I took the rubble from outside and put it in QT. Is this ok? Do I need to take the rock out and cure it (put in a covered bucket with a heater and air pump for a month) before putting it in the tank? Since i'm not going to use it for awhile, can I just let the rock cycle within the QT? I guess i'm trying to ask if there is a proper way to set up a QT. Thanks for your help!
  9. I am posting some pictures of my LR. I used this to seed my tank and was bought fully cured from a LFS. I'd like to know what's on it, specifically, the red fuzzy stuff scattered around the rock. I can tell there is a sponge on the top left corner and a lot of nice coralline on it. At the one end (see 3rd pic), there is a bleached area that I'm not sure what it is. So back the first pic, is this red turf algae? I am pretty sure it's not cyano as I cannot get it off with either a turkey baster or a toothbrush. I did find this old WAMAS thread talking about it: http://wamas.org/for...red-turf-algae/ First, let me just say that I'm not sure I actually have a problem. I'd just like to stay on top of anything that may be harmful if it continues. My amm, trites have been 0 and trats hoover between 5 and 20, depending on when I do my wc. I just did one tonight. I have heard that red turf likes to grow in high flow areas. There is a ph pointing across this LR. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.
