  1. I went through his same torture a couple of years ago. I've begged computer savvy friends to design a "plain language" translator but since they are all smart they don't see the need for one. I've learned some by trial and error but still a novice but I'd be happy to lend a hand. There are some SME in WAMAS so hopefully they can help you out as well. What are you trying to do? Just turn lights on and off?
  2. I have a Mac, fios router, and ac3 and worked it out over a process of trial and error. Let me know where you are in the setup process and I'll try to help.
  3. I also believe the apex has a built in wireless web Internet. Setting an ac3 up for Internet access with a wireless game controller can be a pia depending on your experience level.
  4. If you gently pull the pump out of the acrylic uniseal you will see where there is a blue plastic piece that meets up with the grey housing. Lay a bead of caulk along where the two pieces join. They actually come from reef dynamics with a dab of silicone one one side but won't hurt to use a little extra.
  5. I'm guessing this the reef dynamics one you picked up from me? I'm really sorry. I never had that problem but I bet there is a leak near the venturi leaking some bubbles back. When you fiddled with the air line you probably pushed on the seam temporarily. Those pumps are modified and have some seams that could be the culprit. Bring it by if you want. I have a tube os silicone caulk we could try. Mark
  6. I just re-booted my 30g with zoas and LPS. Maybe after work sometime you could drop by and give me some tips.
  7. Power came on last night at midnight. I was on my 36th hour. I have a 5000 watt gas generator I picked up at a pawn shop awhile ago and it is worth its weight in gold. Ran it 24/7. I got the wife and kids out to the in-laws but I was able to stay in the house in reasonable comfort. Had to refill the 5 gallon tank twice a day but was able to keep all tank stuff running except the lights in addition to several fans, the fridge, freezer, computer, and television. Probabaly could have run the light as well (T5's) but didnt want to add any heat to the room. Only downside was the generator noise but I spread some goodwill in the neighboorhood by offering up freezer space and ice to folks plus most folks had bugged out to a hotel by the second night anyway. My tank is small, 30 g plus 15 g sump, so it was not too demanding. A generator is a must have item.
  8. I travel with my dog 2-3 times a year and the principle is the same. The airline, pilot, and/or TSA can refuse your animal at any point. Sometimes its based on regulations regarding temperature (not an issue with cabin transport). I've even had my dog "thrown off" the plane after I boarded due to an oxygen sensor malfunction on the animal hold. The airline and pilot worked it out for us but bottom line is that you have to have a backup when you transport any livestock. I always make sure my wife or some family are available to pick up the dog if he doesn't make it on the flight. At least with dogs, I've found everyone is very sympathetic and tries to accommodate (missed a Continental connection once and the airline kenneled for free in their facility and emailed me hourly updates on how the dog was doing!). My guess with fish is that they will point you to the nearest waste receptacle.
  9. Try Adam at Artfully acrylic. He just finished a nice little sump for me.
  10. Cool. I drilled mine without a guide and it sucked. For the money, highly recommend.
  11. Yes. I lived in ctenophore's area for 2 years and lost power several times. Definitely look for one with a fuel line drain and make sure you use fuel stabilizer. I picked mine up at a pawn shop - worth looking into. I'd also recommend a battery powered air pump. Cheap insurance.
  12. I had similar setup with the remora nano. One thing I found on the boards were people who cut off the lip with a dremel and placed the skimmer in the sump, essentially converting it to an urchin. Never tried it it because my skimmer section of that sump was to narrow. My nano also took at least two weeks to break in - not sure how long you've had yours. Also, run a small brush down the spray nozzle outlet.
  13. I struggle with this situation as well. There are extremes at both ends - folk who are totally dissatisfied with brick and morter and only by on-line, and those that would rather drive 50 miles to walk in a door than order over the internet. I expect most of us are in between. But I think LFS could improve their customer service, mainly by not stopping when I walk out the door. How about the occasional follow-up call or email to see how stuff is going? Or help with (courtesy) delivery of large items? I think the occasional time investment on part of the business is a better way to maintain loyalty than the gimmicky "point" systems that have sprouted up lately. Overall, I'm a free market guy. I just think that local retailers need to step up their customer service game.
  14. Awesome tank. I just did do something similar with a 30 gallon breeder - given not as custom as yours but I also like the aesthetic of "the pool". Still working on aquascaping... In regards to flow, I run am MP10 which gives me excellent flow but still end up with dead spots along the rear of the tank. I put an HK 750 there and run it intermittently. I have two others and an extra HK nano if you are looking for power heads.
  15. I'm very interested in joining in. Especially intrigued by Justin's app suggestion. But judging from the discourse so far, I will definitely be the programming toddler in the group. Last programming I did was on Applesoft BASIC in '86. Is there a consensus on reef angel vs ground up DIY? Either way, I'm in.
  16. Max, Enjoyed meeting you last week. Great video. Good luck! Mark
  17. Tom, I've never been so interested in something that I have no understanding of whatsoever. Way over my head but very cool.
  18. I'll take it. Let me know what works for you for pickup.
  19. I got one from Justin @Avast last week. He had the 1/2 barb ones.
  20. Most manufacturers say you can use twice the amount for longer term storage but +1 on removing it completely. You generator (also lawnmower, snowblower, etc) will thank you for it. I use this stuff.
  21. I have the same issue in my 29g. I have saturated kalkwasser dripping thru a 1.6ml/min BRS doser controlled by an AC3. Circulation is by three Korelia 750's (at least two are on at any given time). I have used the Holmes-Farley articles as a guide. When I push the tank to 8.4: 1. Alkalinity shoots through the roof ~5.5 meq/L 2. Calcium won't reach above 360 2. My salinity crashes from the freshwater carrier This is pretty much what is described when you try to correct Zone 4 with kalkwasser so... I am currently trying another strategy. I let the pH drift to 8.1 alkalinity is 4.4meq/l. I now have the drip set to 8.1-8.2. Added some ionic calcium and Mg supplement. I'll check the tank in a few days and see where I am. I'm hoping once I get the tank "dialed in" I can just go with the kalkwasser. I also anticipate seeing some difference when the weather gets better and I have more fresh air circulation in the house.
  22. Good news: Disassembly/reassembly didn't affect the other outlets Bad news: New triacs didn't make a difference. So some tips if you try this: 1. Make sure your triacs are shorted. The ones on my malfunctioning outlets were testing fine but I figured since I had the thing open I would replace them anyway - you never know. 2. You do not need to desolder the outlet plugs, just pry the plugs from the outside -they are in two pieces. Just get a small prying tool under them to release the tabs you can see from below. 3. Likewise, when putting it back together, put the plugs back on before you close the unit - it takes a decent amount of force to seat them. 4. As a novice, this took a lot of time - unless you are a pro it is probably not worth the effort - used DC units go between $70-80. 5. That being said, if you want to try it I have a few extra triacs.
  23. Anyone know if the data from an AC3 can be imported into an excel file? The flash based graphing is OK for monitoring but I'd like to see some better graphs. I was surprised I couldn't find an answer on Google. I see in the panel there are some xml data output options but I don't know how to get them into excel. I also tried cut/paste from the datalog option but it wouldn't format into the cells properly.
