  1. Check out my post in the sponsor section. Take advantage of what we have to offer!
  2. How about a Mag 7? Attach a ball valve to it to dictate flow. a 5 MAY be ok too. It doesnt have auto shut off, but can be external as well. IME the only problem with the Mags Ive noticed is if properly maintained, they dont break down!
  3. Piggybacking on onux's reply, thats one of the reasons I started shying away from selling them to many of my customers. They can sometimes be tricky in well established systems once all the detritus and othe goodies for them are gone. Nassarius snails, conch snails(for larger tanks), and sand sifting gobies(with a top on your tank) are decent alternatives. Even some cucumbers work well, but depending on the size of your tank, could cause problems if one were to die. From experience I happen to know theyre not a fan of high nitrate neither, have you tested lately?
  4. It doesnt sound too good. Do you have any pics?
  5. Nice. Cant wait for updates in the future.
  6. For all those interested: Given my maintenance schedule, my shipment dates can be sporatic. I try to get new livestock in bi-weekly. Im also a livestock "gopher" so special orders and group buys are encouraged as well.

  8. Other than maintaining and supplying them, I dont have any of my own. I believe depending on the theme of the tank, you can make a pretty nice FO. Easier to maintain, but yes, tends to bore quickly. Unless the tank is very large. Black tips and zebra octopus are cool to look at. Of course not in the same tank!
  9. IMO, Nextreef makes a nice dual chamber one if you wanted to upgrade. Avast may have something nice as well, I havent had a chance to play with their toys yet, but I hear good things.
  10. Ahh. As am I. There wasnt any reactor talk either. I'll cosign the use of socks. Also not buying cheap carbon and feeding your fish good food! It may have past me in the article, but how large were the study tanks they put the unrinsed carbon in?
  11. Thanks for being informative in your conclusion O! I remember reading about this once before. It does make you think. Theres still alot of variables that werent tested and IMHO the jury may still be out. Skimming and pelletized carbon are excellent alternatives as stated by Oragami and the article. I use carbon sparingly on many of my clients tanks as well as my own, (can you hear me knocking on wood from here!) not too much HLLE goin on over here. I've seen more HLLE on purple tangs and black tangs fresh off the plane than in home aquaria. Not saying it doesnt exist. Just my own little study! Men lie, woman lie, numbers don't.... But you cant torture them to make them say what you want!
  12. Thank you. I'm glad to see everything is going well!

  14. So basically Reefoholic, pump your brakes a little when it comes to maintaining/dosing/ adding stuff to your your tank! In my line of work I see small tanks get it the worse when it comes to misguided error. Other than books, some of the best advice I've got or even given was about being patient. That doesnt fix whats going on now, but many people are here working on it with you as we speak!
  15. The idea Oragami gave about the sheets of glass is great. You can also cut down on the lighting period as well. The water cloudiness could be brought on by a few factors. A couple could be stemming from the light itself. Do roll call on your livestock and run some tests. Carbon can help with clearing the water after losses.
  16. Definitely sounds and looks like photo shock. I can't imagine the UV playing a factor. Isn't your tank relatively new also?
  17. Yeah. Stuff doing well for a couple weeks or even month in a fairly new tank isnt common. IHMO it takes a good 5-6 months to maintain decent stability. SPS and sponges can be difficult to survive in established waters let alone a new tank. Stay the path, and I wouldnt be too discouraged about the losses. Like zygote said, reading is the best, my second line of defense is patience.
  18. Welcome to your cycling tank! Some time, current , and snails will knock it right out! Im not 100% sure of your tank size, but if its under 40-50 gallons, the 10 is fine. Any more, you may want to take the jump for the 40. Wet rock doesnt equal cured rock.
  19. Trust, theres nothing wrong at all with the cannons. Ive seen what a few can do to a public aquarium! Im starting to get well versed in the LED phenomenon as well!
  20. The cannons are a good choice to change. This company by the name of Ecoray has some very nice LEDs. Way more PAR for your buck than other competitors. I saw them set up in a show a while back. When I make my big transition, it may be with them, but the way new LEDs are coming out.......
  21. Magnified, they look like something from outer space. To the naked eye they remind me of little grubs. Sometimes you will see them at night on the glass. You may see some retreating into live rock crevices if you turn on your lights in the middle of the night. Mostly I've found them tucked away in fuges living amongst the algae. Unless you got some established rock, sand, or algae from someone, it may take a while before you have some.
  22. The question may be answered already( i skimmed thru the thread) but the tank may be just tempered glass on the bottom. What company manufactured it? Though it may be more of a daunting task to drill given its very thin glass, it possibly could be done. Regardless congrats and enjoy your new tank!
