  1. The longer you let it sit the better. Once you don't have any smells anymore, add some of your live rock to the tub and let that sit for another week then add some biomass to the tub and let it cycle and you should be semi good. When I seeded my dry liverock I just let it sit for 3 months.
  2. Going to point out we haven't been given a lot of information here. To get an idea of where you are in a cycle did you monitor your Ammonia levels at all? Did you kick your cycle off? Or did you just put everything together and do a couple water changes? All these are factors when determining where in the cycle you are or if you even have had a cycle. Kick off - refers to adding a small amount of organic matter (often a piece of shrimp or scallop from yesterdays dinner) to break down and start the nitrogen cycle. The dangerous phase of the cycle is when your ammonia levels are high during the initial start of the cycle before you have an adequate amount of bacteria to take care of the cycle. Also if you have been doing water changes during the cycle it elongates the cycling process because you are removing the ammonia before the bacteria is able to digest it and multiply. If you have done this and you are measuring zero ammonia/nitrite in your tank I'd say you are fairly safe to add you first fish/clean up crew. EDIT* Also HELLO FELLOW BIOCUBER!
  3. Yeah, I have trust issues it took me a year of manual dissing every day to finally automate it. .. which hasn't done a lot because I still check everyday. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  4. Good catch! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  5. I'd stop dosing calcium, continue to dose the ash until your levels even out.
  6. Not impossible, just improbable.
  7. I am running GFO... I'm not actually that upset over not having Coralline Algae, I was really just looking for an excuse to post a funny picture. I do find it odd I don't have any growth, but as Mrs Reef and wildcrazyjoke have said, excess coralline algae is a headache. I'll stay content to watch my SPS flourish. I may turn my GFO off for a month to see if that is what stunts my growth of coralline algae, I'd prefer to know than not!
  8. I use Everygrow LED IT2040, It runs at about 45% intensity at 10" off the water. For the most part uncovered rock is whiteish, except from the single rock with the actual coralline algae on it mentioned above. For a while I thought the SPS was just sucking down all the calcium faster than the algae could metabolize it, so I pushed the calcium to the upper registers, and held it there for a while without much luck.
  9. I do... I have one isolated patch on some live rock that fluctuates between deep pink and light pink. It has never expanded and has never spread to other parts of the tank. All in all, the amount of Coralline algae I have could fit under the face of a dollar bill.
  10. It still hasn't happened! At least I'm getting good SPS growth though! Is there anything I can do to promote the growth of Coralline Algae? Current Params Calcium- 440 Alkalinity - 10dKH Salinity - 1.025 Temp - 80 ph - 8.2 Phos <.5 Nitrate- 0 Magnesium - 1250'ish
  11. As far as I know there is no definitive answer for it as of yet. I'll make some calls when I'm in the office tomorrow and see if I can't find anything out.
  12. If this is better suited to the Refugium section, please move it there. I was talking with some folks and I was amazed with how little people, who are interested in Conservation, know about what is going on at a Government level. I'm sharing this link to a news letter I contribute to for anyone who is interested in what the Federal Government is doing in regards to coastal activities. This is a quarterly new article which gives a brief overview of some of the projects we are doing around the country. While not all pertain to coral, some do. The articles usually have a section on corals and climate change, or a project involving coral reseeding or something along those lines. I don't normally work with coral specifically, but my projects often involve protecting habitat with coral and my projects are often highlighted in these articles. The article I thought you guys might find interesting in on page 5, and again on page 8. Unfortunately it's not good news, but it is interesting.
  13. Does delivering the corals to the meeting mean free shipping?
  14. Very nice start! Better than my first attempt, I couldn't even get GSP or Zoas to live!
  15. Welcome to the forum Easiest way to post to the forum is to go to a site like Photobucket.com, Imgur.com, or one of the many photo hosting sites. Upload your photo there. Once done you will have bunch of options when you click on the picture, copy the BBCode (Message boards and Forums) [.IMG]Imarealohoto[./IMG] Then post the BBCode it gives you directly into the post you are making and it will post the picture you uploaded to your post. It sounds roundabout, but it is really easy and quick once you know how. Happy reefing.
  16. I have the S4 too, ZoomFX was the best app purchase I've ever made for the phone. NOVA423 suggested it too me and man was he right. This was taken using ZoomFX with the S4, just so you get an idea.
  17. I run them each night. No downside so far.
  18. I switched to LED lighting and the issue completely went away. Edit* Off the top of my head a possible fix would be to install a couple spacers around the rim of your tank to raise the glass a little bit. This would create a small gap between the tank and the glass and you could run a fan to pull outside air under the glass on one side and out from under the glass on the other side. This might be enough to keep the temperature low enough to prevent condensation, or enough to dissipate the humidity trapped underneath.
  19. Pretty much, it's the total dissolved solids, organic and inorganic in the water. It measures ionized and colloid particles. Not sure what else would be left. If it's reading 0 via 2 different TDS meters I wouldn't worry.
  20. I'm sure someone has and I'm sure their power went out and it drained their tank. That would be my only concern.
  21. Yeah I got great deal on them!
  22. The two posts on your thread, one on January 18th 2012 and one on September 20th 2013 broke my heart. The beautiful tank then the next photo the bubble algae distribution center. I got all my algae in my tank from a cat that decided a fish tank was a good litterbox. It is a 29 Gallon Biocube, girlfriend got it for me for my birthday a while back. I think the dark substrate was the best and worst choice I've ever made. I'm not sure how I'm going to keep it clean as the corals keep growing in. The inner cave is almost completely in accessible to me now.
  23. I made the mistake on my first 75 Gallon tank. I did not set it up right and cut corners. I'll never do that again, just a lot of wasted time and money. I have a dosing pump that slowly drips water into my tank at the same rate it evaporates. I was looking at some ATO options, but how they work worries me. I felt a steady drip was a better option than an ATO. (I should say I was worried about the float switch mostly because my cats have a tendency to play with things. This just seemed right up their alley)
  24. Oh it's not so hard, just have to be very consistent same as any tank. Hardest part I've found is keeping up with the demand on Calcium. I'm hoping switching over to 2 part dosing will fix the issue.
  25. Well, I've finally got enough people asking me to post pictures of my tank I've decided to go ahead and post it up. I hope you guys enjoy my tank at least a quarter as much as I do! It's not the cleanest tank, I still have hair algae and yes, it is annoying. Here you can see my IT2040 LED fixture Here you can see my MP10 controller and my Reef Octopus BH-1000 Skimmer Here is where I store all my reef stuff and I've set up to start dosing 2 part, because the kalk wasn't keeping up with my tanks demands. Full tank shot using my cellphone, bummer the torch coral doesn't look golden in the picture. That's probably enough for now I guess! There are some coral skeletons as you saw, I put the LEDS over my tank at 50% thinking I would acclimate them slowly. Little did I know 50% was still stronger than they were used to and I ended up nuking half my corals literally in a matter of hours. Lesson learned! I don't think I'll be winning any photography awards
