  1. Not really. I don't think my system has much to begin with and the little it does is fixed by the algae. The weird part is it only grows on my gsp.
  2. Awesome man, Your tanked certainly looked nice last time I was over. I wanted to do Vodka dosing but I have no measurable NO3 or PO4 in my system, but I do have a little bit of algae.
  3. I used to have a 200 gallon tank we would take to different conferences and what not with oysters back when I worked for Habitat Management. It's really powerful and gives people a good perspective on how effective these critters are.
  4. Hi Bambi, what you've outlined as concerns are very minor when it comes to the overall health of your tank. You haven't really outlined the problems you are having outside of saying your having them. This makes it fairly hard to diagnose whats wrong with the tank. Start by telling us your NH3 NO3 PO4 dKH Temp Frequency and Volume of water changes Are you having algae issues? Are you having issues with corals melting away Whats the specific problem you are encountering that you view as your problem. With as much of this information as you can provide, we can better serve you. And we want to help.
  5. Due the nature of power heads every time you turn them on or off it shortens their life slightly. Doing it hundreds of times over the course of a day really starts adds up. Best way to address it is to have a power head designed to have a variable flow. I use two Vortech MP10's on my biocube facing each other, it doesn't work exactly like I'd prefer, but it's much better than the unidirectional flow I had before. I plan to upgrade to 2 Vortech MP10 with the wireless controllers so I can set one up to be the slave and have them alternate flow.
  6. Thanks, that does look like what I have and sounds vaguely familiar.
  7. You need to think about the hydrology of your tank. Unless you have power heads with variable flow or inconsistent flow patterns you will get the water flowing in the direction of least resistance and with out a determining variable changing the path of least resistance will not change either. Long of the short, you can place those power heads anywhere you want in the tank and it will likely result in a consistent and predictable pattern. You need a variable in the equation to keep changing to throw off the equilibrium of forces. *edit, Koralia flow might be inconstant enough to face the power heads directly at each other and have their currents slip off each other.
  8. Anyone know what this is? I keep getting asked and honestly, I have no idea what it is or where I got it... thanks.
  9. Hi Bambi, Frogspawn is pretty easy to frag. All you need to do is take it out of the water so you can see the branches. Then once you can see the branches cut them just above the "V" the branch makes. I use bolt cutters to cut the branches off and frag them that way. Short of bolt cutters you could just break them with your hands.
  10. If you have the HQI version, the back brace that holds the glass in place is perfect for mounting a LED moonlight strip. Just drill two holes and attach with wire or zip ties.
  11. It might be about to expel.. when mine expelled it looked terrible, expelled, shriveled up, then was fine a couple days later. Anemones are odd creatures. If all your params are fine, I wouldn't expect anything to be wrong.
  12. So I'm pretty bad at photography, but I reaquascaped my tank and thought I'd share. Some of my corals are actually coming back to life. I left some of the corals I thought might live in the tank, and some of them have actually started coming back and coloring up. Pretty neat to watch how resilient coral can be. My Reeftech Starburst monicap that I thought for sure would be toast has actually colored back and and looks great, though half of it did actually die. Here is a quick FTS of the new aquascape.
  13. Hey Crob, the diurnal cycle of photosynthesis and respiration is the cause of this rise and fall of pH. During the day organisms in the tank convert CO2 and H20 into carbohydrates and oxygen. The consumption of CO2 raises the pH while this process is taking place during the day. Likewise once the lights are out, the organisms still need energy, so they start breaking apart the carbohydrates in a process called respiration, releasing the CO2 back into the system and lowering the pH. The larger the tank the smaller this swing will be, for example when I had my 75 gallon lightly stocked tank, the pH swing was less than .2, whereas oi my heavily stocked BioCube the pH would swing by 2 if I let it.
  14. I remember reading a study some time ago about the effects of H202 on Sea Water. Findings showed it lowered the pH slightly. I don't remember much about it.
  15. At $25 a mushroom I'd be ecstatic for them to take over my tank.
  16. This so much. This may have easily been the best upgrade I got for my 29 gallon tank, and the cheapest!
  17. Thanks! Didn't even think to look in the image name.
  18. I think I used the Wish List to alert me when the Neptune DOS units were back in stock recently.
  19. Lionfish aren't poisonous, they are venomous. This is anecdotal, but lionfish venom doesn't seem to affect other predatory fish, I've seen fish (Grouper, Trigger, Shark) eat lionfish after being speared. I've seen them being eaten whole and torn to bits, either way none of the fish involved seem to notice the venom. I really hate seeing videos like this get passed around, not because they aren't cool, but because people don't understand the truth. It lends to the belief these fish are coming to the rescue of our reefs and undermines the public support of conservation efforts. Evolutionary traits like these usually take thousands of years to develop, this is an outlier not the norm.
  20. Hello Tin, Tank is about 3 years old, had a recent die off due to a heater, some stuff survived, not much. Lights I'm using are the Evergrow IT2040 LED fixture Thanks! It's not perfect yet, but it is getting there.
  21. One of the 4 heads on the DOS has started to back siphon, I was disappointed because one of the selling points was it wasn't supposed to back siphon at all. I've contacted Neptune Support and they are going to be sending a replacement motor. They think its an issue with the rollers.
  22. I wouldn't even move my tank 10' when Kate asked.
