  1. Congrats Chris, forgot to tell you, you should never look directly into them. They're called Cannons and for good reason.
  2. Welcome to WAMAS. A few things: 1) Nitrate, Nitrite, PH,and Ammonia test kit (just get the cheap API one and use it for reference) - around $30 or so (almost all stores sell them, even some of the bigger chains). 2) Decide on what you'd like to do with the tank (fish only, corals), what type (of fish and/or corals), their temperament and the like (research on what others have experienced with their livestock). 3) If you'd like to save money in the long run look for a RO/DI unit - around $100-$150 4) Be patient take your time, don't rush just because something looks cool or is on sale (this is typically for livestock) 5) Although not a necessary to have, maybe look into a controller (Neptune Systems or Digital Aquatics) to automate certain things (lights, heater control, top off) it could help you out some. 6) Maybe a refractometer - around $50 Since this is a new tank: 1) Think about what you'd like to have as your clean up crew (snails, hermits, etc). These are usually the first inhabitants after the cycle. Also, join WAMAS, they're a pretty cool bunch (and for $20 it's a steal). As a newbie to the hobby, some of the folks may even help you out with some easy beginner corals. You also get to unlock the Sale section (which could save you a lot of money). Another thing you may want is to put in your location, not a necessary, but good to have sometimes.
  3. I ran a 1260 on a 150 (72x24x20) and that wasn't an issue. I'd say use a 1260 or if you wanted a little more, go with the 1262, but for sure, start off with your mag9 and if it isn't enough, then up it.
  4. I'll probably get flamed, but not necessarily. For the past year I've every single time I've gone to Rick's Fish and pets in Frederick, they have a 10" or so tang in a 75 or 90g tank full of live rock. He hasn't croaked yet.
  5. Sorry to see you go Eric, but good luck man.
  6. Guess this is what you can do when you're making millions. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Chad-Ochocinco-sleeps-underneath-a-whole-bunch-o?urn=nfl-wp6214
  7. Welcome to wamas and let the addiction begin.
  8. Keep as is. The 36" would be great room so some schooling fish and you can get pretty crazy with some of the rock work.
  9. Can't comment on either, but you should probably decide on what you're setting up. Are you going for a high flow SPS full blown system? Are you going for a slow flow LPS/softie look? Flow could help you decide on which substrate should you get.
  10. I really like the Marineland Deep Dimensions 150g tank (36x36x27). Only thing is that I don't really like the tank being 27" tall. I like tank around 22-20".
  11. Call AI. Fastest way to get a better response. I don't think you need a controller to get all the lights up and running though.
  12. Good luck with the fish and sorry to hear your troubles. I've had a black and white and regular occ for the past 3 years from Petco, just for an example. Would still have a flame angel that my wife bought me, but he met a carpet nem once. :(
  13. Check the forums, especially the WTB forums. There was a guy selling some rock in Walkersville, MD. Also, if you want to go to the store, check out our local sponsors. I'm sure all of them would be more than happy to hook you up with some great rock. Examples: Blue Ribbon Koi (Centreville, VA) Fins and Feather (Ashburn, VA) Marine Scene Petland Maybe Mr. Coral???? Maybe Dr. Mac (Pacific East Aquaculture)?
  14. I use DI, and when my TDS goes beyond 7 then I replace. Also, I do notice that the DI gets used a lot faster when the membrane is shot.
  15. Depends, there are some urchins that will break their spines leaving some in you like bristleworms (or at the folks at VI told me).. If there's still pain, I'd go to the emergency room just in case. Worst case scenario, they say nothings wrong. Best case, you catch something that could be worse later on down.
  16. I did the whole skimmerless deal, and really had some good results. I had ceriths reproducing like crazy, I mean, I was giving hundreds to a thousand away every month almost and there never seemed to be an end to them. Corals (SPS mainly), grew like weeds. Also, I was doing water changes every month or two months and was never able to detect nitrates or phosphates. Worse case scenario, if things don't work out, do a good water change and turn the skimmer back online if there is even the slightest bit or negative reaction from your livestock.
  17. Ok, here's what you do, step by step: 1) Plug PC4 into wall socket 2) Plug RKL Head unit into PC4 3) Plug 2nd PC4 into 1st PC4 4) Plug SL1 (or SL2) into 2nd PC4 5) Plug in SID into SL1 (or SL2) 6) Plug SID into USB 7) Open up MyReef 2.0 8) You should see all your devices From here you can customize the naming of the PC4s, and the outlets. When programming the individual outlets, you'll have to select the module (PC4) that they're on, and give it the parameters that you want, like Heater set to 79.x with Histerix or whatever it is to .2 or something like that. This will mean that it'll turn your heater on when it's .2* lower than what your setting is (say 79.5), and when it reaches 79.7 it'll turn your heater off. It's pretty simple once you wrap yourself around their logic.
  18. That's the part that annoys me the most, you have to upgrade each piece individually. Also, everything must be in before you can program the different outlets.
  19. I use it and plugged it into the SL1, no real problems there. Before I did this, I also took each piece and upgraded them one by one. Then after the upgrade, I was able to see everything once I plugged into the SL1 (while the temp probe was unplugged).
  20. Because of your BTA, nothing else. Why chance losing anything, especially since your 24 doesn't really have any room for anything.
  21. I think NAGA has been dabbling with glass as well.
  22. I'd just like a school of chromis and and some cleanup crew snails. If that is possible.
  23. You know, I'm sure that there are folks that may take care of it for you for a little while until you're ready to receive it back again.
