  1. Hi Snowheart it's good that you're doing research before jumping in. I had very little in the way of information sources/resources when I first started salt, so sadly, I made a lot of beginner mistakes, and even more sadly, a whole lot of other people are making every day. WAMAS is great - I encourage you to join, maybe go to the symposium this weekend.
  2. I finally had the rock in my 45 looking decent when I decided to take out the crushed coral which was way too deep or not deep enough (going to put sand in). I'm a rather creative person, but aquascaping is not one of my talents. Is the 58 still 36x24, but 18 instead of 12?
  3. well, for a tang anyway that store is part of the reason people have their tanks overcrowded and can't keep them clean
  4. shoot, im always bruised up under my arms just from my 45g
  5. http://www.aquacon.com/Surgeonfish_saltwaterfish.html this online store is crazy - it has 20 gallons for hippos, chevrons, sailfins, and red sea purples
  6. lots of liverock rubble in fuge = nature's bioballs
  7. the only way to get it out of the tank is to remove the rock. To demonstrate how aggressive they are: I just have a damsel and a pair of mated clowns. Mated female clowns are often very aggressive - mine killed everything years ago, except this damsel which is only 1/3rd the clown's size. The damsel freely swims back and forth through clown territory without getting chased.
  8. i think that contraption is a denitrator - they work but can backfire and dump your tank full of garbage. You have to cycle them, so it takes several weeks before they actually have any effect. They are also permanently sealed - can't take them apart unless you want to re-cycle them. They are more for people who don't have refugiums. Most people who use them make them themselves. All it is is an airtight sealed canister with coiled airline tubing in it with bioballs in the center The water has to drip through slowly - it goes along the coil top to bottom. There is aerobic bacteria in the top section , then in the lower section there is anaerobic bacteria to break down the nitrates. The contraption in that add seems not to have the coil, and they talk about "feeding" but that doesn't make sense unless what they are talking about is some kind of chemical that is intended to remove nitrate. Most people build them themselves - I considered it which is why I researched it, but I'm building my fuge so it would be pointless.
  9. that is SOOO early for me - I don't even go to bed till around 3am.... if I can get there that early, I can certainly help out in the am
  10. I have one of those greens and am feeding it myself so it doesn't go after anything, and will get rid of it soon. If you go to buy a clean up crew as a package, take note that Congressional Aq includes those greens in theirs. I didn't get the package but asked them about the star before I bought it and they are telling people it's fine with tank mates.
  11. we're talking the June 23rd meeting, right?
