Coral CPR??? How is electric shock treated? Immediate treatment consists of: separating the victim from the current source, re-establishing vital functions and providing supportive care as required.

Man... I GOTTA start reading WAMAS at work. I missed it all - now I have nothing but the CENSORED version to look at and wonder... Jan - I absolutely agree with you! I think some of Tiger's injuries were probably sustained before he got out of the driveway. Now I have to find the thread with Howard in the WAMAS thong and re-activate it for entertainment! bob

Okay - my 2 cents... I am neither an expert, nor a genius, NOR did I stay at a Holiday Inn recently! This is just my personal opinion. What does the spray can say on it? They all have environmental impact statements now. You're new to this. There are 38 different ways you might have killed things off. It MAY or may NOT have anything to do with the bug spray. Yes - insecticides often cause problems with fish tanks, but who really knows. The stuff that is not doing well STILL may not be doing well for 13 other reasons. Especially zoa's - I have a colony of Armor Of God zoa's that went from 4 polyps to 40 polyps - back down to 1 polyp, and is now about 30 polyps; all while sitting in the same spot, same flow, same light, same water. I have a colony of nightmares that has been growing, growing for the last 6 months, from 2 polyps to about 30 polyps. Last night - it started just dropping polyps off for no apparent reason. JUST to be on the safe side, and because your new tank is SO much better a choice - I would go ahead and switch tanks. I would toss out the sand because I always toss out the old sand. Get a couple of cups of 'experienced' sand from someone else to add to your new sand bed, in case yours does have some evil stuff in it. I would probably NOT throw out the rocks. I would take them out - HOSE them off for just a minute or two, to blast loose anything that will fall off - and then use them in the new tank. Don't let them dry out - they should recover their abilities to filter water rapidly. Unless you sprayed a whole can right into the tank, I can't imagine you put enough into those rocks to cause long-term harm. If you really need to get rid of them - give them to me. I will put them in my 'rock-cooking' tank for a year and see if anything dies (hermits, snails, and a few soft corals). Best of luck with the new tank!!! bob

I used vinegar last time - worked great! bob

Will the overflow handle 500gph?? (or near it - you will be getting a little less due to head loss and other losses). Like someone else - I would suggest that if you have the choice (i.e. - the tank is still empty) - that you drill an overflow, rather than use a U-tube. I almost left the hobby because my first 'real tank' had a U-tube. I hated it. The skimmer sounds just right... bob

There are many ways to set up a system. I love sumps. They seem to make sense to me - you pump water out of the sump, into the tank, and it falls back into the sump. If you pump slower - the sump still has the same amount of water in it. If you pump faster - same thing. UNTIL you get to a point where the 'overflow' (whatever it might be) can't handle the amount of water you're pumping into the tank. Sumps are a great place for a refugium, a skimmer, media reactor, CA reactor, etc. Having a LARGE sump adds significantly to the total water volume of the system, and therefore to stability. I'm a sump fan! bob

I doubt anyone here disagrees with the idea that SOMETHING we, the human race, are doing, is causing these problems. 6 Billion people create a lot of waste. The premise of this thread is that we may have been wasting our time, spinning our wheels, while even more corals and other species die - because someone has a political or social agenda to promote the idea that Global Warming is our enemy, and that we can actually do something about it. As Steve Outlaw mentioned above - the research I've done (on the internet, I can NOT do the math myself) indicates that in a best-case scenario (all humans dead, or otherwise creating zero carbon emissions), we could affect the quantity of greenhouse gases by about 0.28%. I just don't believe that is enough to change the climate noticeably. Let's take other possible causes - sewage and chemical runoff into the ocean; we can fix a large percentage of that. The rest of the animal population doesn't seem to have produced enough in the past to have caused problems. But then, we are the only animal that builds 70-story apartment buildings so that we can 'stack' ourselves up, and take less earth surface area per given population. And your fossil-fuel emissions - I'm not sure WHAT effect they are having on the oceans; but we pump out millions of tons of the crap - it HAS to be doing something bad, other than creating smog over Los Angeles. I think it's unlikely the other animals on the planet have contributed greatly to that - we should be able to fix that almost 100%. I would much rather dedicate myself to something I can actually do. bob -

Oh for crying out loud, Steve... you're going to make me go search through all that crap to find the Weldon and applicators that I got some time back just in case someone had an emergency, aren't you... bob Okay - so you lead a charmed life. It took me an hour yesterday to find ANY of the 4,000 wire-ties I have. It took me 5 minutes to find my Weldon-4 and applicators. bob -

I quoted one earlier. There are thousands, and you have to read a lot of them to get the idea of what is going on, and you have to put them in context. The 'AGW' people are pretty much in control of all of the "peer-reviewed" publications. However, one of them, "Climate Research" has allowed some 'skeptics' on their editorial board, and has allowed opposing views to actually be published. This is what one of the scientists wrote to his associates about that: -
Because of this thread - I actually pulled mine out last night and looked it over. It IS definitely growing. Coral tissue has started to grow down the sides of the frag. Fingers crossed! This coral will definitely go into my display if it continues to grow. bob

Ummm... did you actually read the post? If anyone is NOT saying that it's okay to generate CO2 - that would be him. As far as so what if it's all wrong? If it's wrong - well, SOMETHING is killing the reefs. And we aren't fixing it. bob -

Temperatures may very well be increasing. It may very well be a normal occurrence. Humans may have something to do with it. But the data I've been able to find indicates that Human-produced greenhouse gases at a maximum can only be a VERY small factor. i.e. - if we were all to commit suicide tomorrow it would only have a negligible effect on any increased temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions. I wish it were otherwise. I wish we could all become 'carbon-neutral', or even carbon-negative, and save the earth. Ever-increasing populations, with their pollutions of every sort are almost certainly causing grave harm to our little planet. I'm even reasonably sure we have a HEAVY hand in killing off the coral reefs. I just don't think we're doing it with our excess carbon dioxide. If these scientists have been purposely mis-leading us to believe that is the solution, simply because that's where the grants and money are - then they bear a lot of responsibility when we find out much too late that we should have been concentrating on something else - something that we COULD do. What's wrong with this picture... bob -
I have avoided Goniopora since starting this hobby a couple of years ago - because of all the warnings I've read about them dying. However... I saw one I just couldn't resist and purchased it a couple of months ago. So far it seems to be very happy, and I'm reasonably certain it is growing. I have gone to nowhere near the lengths Paul has to feed mine, but I do crush up some PE mysis once a week, and 'dust' it over the polyps. There are times that it appears to be eating some - but as Paul said, it's hard to be sure. Naturally, I'd like to think it's going to grow and get huge, and reproduce and live happily ever after. But I'll try not to get my hopes up too high. bob

What happened to the link? (oh, my... nice Acans... not bad at all!) bob
-
I am rather new to ACANS... in the sense that all the ACANS I got during my first two years of reef-keeping either died, or shriveled down to near-nothing. This last year, I have started growing them very well. They tend NOT to like 'HIGH' lighting. I put mine near the edges of my T5 fixtures in my frag tanks, and they do nicely. So - you may have hit the nail on the head. bob

Unfortunately, you are mixing apples and oranges. Yes - we humans are destroying our planet. But, IMHO, we are not doing it with our carbon dioxide emissions. I think 'global warming' is a red herring, taking us away from the very real problems that we are creating, and CAN do something about. I'm old, you see... I remember the 50's, when the same scientific community was telling us to prepare for the 'little ice age'. I remember the 60's/70's when they were telling us that by 2010 (stand by for cataclysm in just over a month!) the hole in the ozone layer would be so big that human beings would suffer serious mutations, and much of the population would die out. Are there too many of us, using too many resources, causing too much pollution for this big blue marble to handle - yes! I can agree with everything you're saying. I just can't link it to a human-caused greenhouse effect. bob -
Welcome to the DC area! Nice aquascaping, by the way! bob

Yes - a lot of stuff will be taken completely out of context. Yes - people writing e-mails to one another do NOT anticipate that they will be 'peer-reviewed'. But they are a very good insight into the 'feelings' and perhaps 'goals' of the writers. Here is a quote from one of the purported stolen e-mails: -

Wow... now that you've sent me off on an hour-long chase - this is starting to look pretty bad. I particularly like the Fox News video. Which can be seen on this page: http://whatreallyhappened.com/content/clim...ts-reveal-fraud or do a search on 'climategate: fox rips'. Talk about 'warming' ... see a global-warming advocate's temperature rise exponentially! Apparently pro-global-warming-as-the-cause-for-everything scienists 'took over' all of the so-called peer reviewed journals, so they could determine exactly which 'peers' would review what. These folks are very angry because one of the journals has multiple editors, and one of them allows data to be published that don't fit their needs. Another is complaining about the fact they can't seem to come up with a reason there has been no warming for the last 10 years, when there should have been. Then, we have New Zealand, where someone published a graph with the 'original' temperature data used for the officially published graphs - which shows the data has been seriously manipulated - to show a rise in temperature of over 1 degree, when the original data shows 0.06 degree. Early readings were lowered, more recent readings were raised. Without explanation. Is 'global warming' about to implode? bob -
