  1. The zoa can be nasty, I work with them before with some small cuts on my hand- I felt sick and nauseous afterward. I think it depends strongly on variety of zoa, some I work with, I don't feel anything while some, I get effects. Radioactive Dragon Eye and Military People Eater were two that gave me more effect than others. Green Monster didn't effect me but it shot toxin at my face when I was cutting it up- I was wearing a face guard.
  2. I don't think it would be wise to place any offensive scent product near wasp. They'll get mad and start stinging more. For myself, I'll just sprinkle sugar and sawdust on fly strip and let them come to it.
  3. Ack, lucky I didn't get stung over there today. Which tank was it on, the main tank? I recall you having wooden canopy and paper wasp love woods, they have been known to sneak into basement and create a colony down there.
  4. Zoa do shoot poison when irritated! Leathers release toxin into water and my best skimmer couldn't handle it, probably was because of size of colony. I doubt tobacco would kill coral, never heard of such case. I agree with Lanman, it may be some of sudden change in water temperature or chemistry. Do you have sandbed? There's a quite few documents about mass dying of bacteria and micro-organism and it causes ammonia spike. It happened me to me once but tank was small and didn't have many corals in there.
  5. I had one of those before, very beautiful monitpora- I got from Dr. Mac and he called it Montipora Danae. I gotta check my tank and see if I still have it.
  6. I ride all of my fish out. I just leave them in tank and they all live. I tried to do QT thingy once many years ago and NEVER AGAIN! QT is just effective way of corralling up your fish and execute them in private.
  7. Corner the fellas with 6" net and 10" net, when he's near 10" net, coax him into position with 6" net. Turn off light so he can't make quick escape.
  8. 400 DE MH 14k will do well for that tank. Get lumenarc elite with galaxy ballast and 14k phoenix bulb, you will be all set.
  9. Beautiful growth!!!! I wish I have before and after shot of my ORA Green Birdnest. I got him like skinny 1" then over 2 years- he grew to 12" ball. Then weird RTN hits and lost whole thing in 12 hours. Now, all I have left is 1 1/2" that survived the RTN.
  10. GARF.org might have good resources on sarcophytons. They're specialized in that type of coral.
  11. I am fond of T5 system, I made my own T5/T12 for my home tank. I copied almost exact set-up as Dave's and they work pretty well. I would have gone with MH set-up but heat is a big factor at my home, chiller is a bit costly and eats up electricity bill. One thing I gave a lot thought is evaporation rate of water itself, MH "cooks" the surface and evaporate water quickly than T5 set-up. I am not home often to fill up tank. DIY canopy can be a real money saver and fun project but I have been noticing people buying all in one fixture for convenience and look. Ready made system can be costly. How deep is your tank? T5 generally do well for 24" and under, they don't have high penetration like MH. Combo would be ideal for 120g tanks, 2 x 250w DE 14k set-up with either 2 x 75w actinic T12 VHO or 2 x 54w or 2x 80w actinic T5 is probably perfect candidate for your tank.
  12. Post title: interfering in Wlamart fish sales Never shopped at wlamart, hmmm. hehehe Unfortunately, ignorance is widespread problem in pet industry and not enough education for the retailers who sells pet and products. It is prevalent especially in large department store and large pet corporation. They don't have enough resources and time to train their employees. I have seen some idiotic thing at walmart in regarding to fishes and even at LFS! One time, I overhear someone saying that oscar and goldfish can co-habit in peace. He kept on about adding tropical fish like neon tetra, guppies, etc. Just wanna make me slap that person silly. He was selling to 12 years old boy, I jumped in and told him, "How can you be so stupid, oscars eat goldfish for breakfast!" He walked away and the kid end up telling his mom- she came and said thanks so much! A few minutes later, manager came down and said thanks, too. That employee must have been demoted to stock room job because I never saw him again after that. I think that was at McCrory- dead dept store now. I truly think that we need to interfere sometime. Customers can be naive or uneducated, ignorance will exploit that. Jump in when you have to, it's for sake of goodness. They will be grateful that you help them.
  13. My blue devil damsel did the same, in 2 different tanks. Maybe just bedding or territorial thing. Unfortunately, he passed away yesterday, after being with us for 4 years.......
  14. Thanks for releasing me! *gate opens* BRAIN, BRAIN EVERYWHERE!!!!!
  15. PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!! How far are you from Frederick, MD? I'll take it.
  16. I have been looking for exact tank like this! What's the dimension? Let me know, I want this
  17. Does that applies to returning members? I have limited access, not like before when I was member.....
  18. Interested in all live rocks, would like to see photo. Also Hippo Tang
  19. I like the design! Almost alike to my 330g stand, it was much complicated as in more beams for support. Are your going with walnut cover, trim, etc for your stand? Or just plain cover with door? I like seeing the progression on fancy cover, all that nice routing on edge, trims, and stain
  20. If you have softies in your tank, they are known for shooting poison into water. I had 2 crashes before as result of temperature going slightly above 80 and stressing them out; 2nd time was chemical warfare between corals. Hope you recover soon, it always hard when tank crashes, almost have to break down and start over again each time. When you deal with tap water to clean anything, always let them dry out before placing back into tank. Chloramine won't dissipate from surface that quickly- an hour would do and make sure substrate are on full spread, that way chloramine can evaporate off easily.
  21. Lanman is right in many ways. It's all matter of how they adapt to new tanks. I have Supergirl monti which I got from Dr. Mac, it's all brown now. Light plays huge factor behind coloration and growth. I had a very beautiful blue tort which I placed under cheap T-8 lights and it changed colors to purple body with neon green polyps in just a month. People was asking if it was Sally's Purple Bonsai. They were offering me $100 for 1" frag when it was only $5. I lend that frag to someone and he killed it, ugh!!!!!! My green finger leather I got from Dave is now even more brighter green (chartreuse) with more "glow" appearance. If someone have plenty of tanks around and could play with different types of lights, just put frags of same coral in each tanks- see how they change in a few months. Who know, that person might have their name placed before the coral's name and become famous grower. My Tyree frags still are consistent with their appearance, though.
  22. It is nearly impossible to actually identify the "pedigree" of corals. There's many new names coming up today and I have seen a zoa having 25 different names. If you want Tyree frags, buy it from him or check the receipt of those who claim to have his stock- his website has list of people who have bought from him. Normally, I don't trade pedigree corals because they're easily fake and everyone's out for quick cash on counterfeit species. I don't truly believe Tyree's frags are unique at all because I have seen more popping up and posses striking resemblance to his frags. He just collects frags that HAVEN'T been collected yet. Some of his stocks are beautiful and I praise him on effort for finding unique corals.
  23. I recommend for you to check with your accountant or book keeper, they will know more and tell you what is deductible, write-off, exempt, etc. I got all info from my book keeper and went to MD Comptroller to get more information on running business plus taxes. Better check to see what VA law for tax and "home-business." If you really sell a lot then you should be qualified for home business. Business get more tax write-off than hobby, it isn't hard to advance to home business status- few small fees there and fill out registration then you have home business. I strongly suggest for you to research on this matter more deeply and give it a lot consideration.
