davelin315's 300 Gallon In Wall Reef Tank

Recommended Posts

Well, I've got some new pictures to share, thanks to this thread in the member's section (sorry, to look at it you'll have to be a member!): Best Acrylic Scraper Money Can Buy.

Anyway, here're the results of my work!

The tank halfway scraped. The lights are raised up so I can reach in and one is off, so it's a bit darker than normal.

Here's a new coral I picked up from the Aquarium Company this past weekend when I met up with Coral Hind to pick up the fossils he collected at Scientist Cliffs in Cavlert County, MD.

DSC_8451.jpg

Here's the chunk of what I think is pocillopora that is on the multi-type coral I got from there as well. This is the one that fell into the sand and I didn't pick it up so the piece of coral in the back was injured and then RTNd.

DSC_8452.jpg

Here's another coral given to me by Khanh (bendalat). It's a blue milli that I'm hoping will take off in the light there.

DSC_8453.jpg

DSC_8454.jpg

This is the Montipora danae that I picked up a while back from the Aquarium Company.

DSC_8455.jpg

Just to rehash the original point, here's a shot of what the coralline coverage was before I scraped...

DSC_8456.jpg

Here's a shot of the Miyagi tort I have. It's morphed colors and is now a nice blue with greenish hued polyps. Right in front of it is a red table frag I picked up from Leishman. It doesn't show too well under the 20,000K lights, figure I need a lower K for better red, but not sure of that.

DSC_8459.jpg

Here's one of my female anthias that has morphed into a male. Pretty fish, probably one of the neatest in the tank right now.

DSC_8460.jpg

DSC_8462.jpg

Here's the blue belly regal I got from the Aquarium Company.

DSC_8461.jpg

First good shot I've been able to take of it! It's out all the time and I have also added the yellow belly from BRK now. It was eating pellets so well that I felt it was time to add it to the tank. I will also add the emperor from the sump soon to see how it does in the main system. I'm very excited for this, but will allow the new yellow belly to get comfortable first. One neat thing is that the blue and yellow bellies have begun to swim together showing zero aggression or even dominance, so I'm thinking that I lucked out and they have already decided to pair up. Once I finish with the scraping I'll take some more shots. Hopefully I can get a shot of the sand where all of the coralline remains are sitting...

An update with some new pictures now that the tank is nearly all the way scraped. If only I had arms that were 6" longer...

Since I've been moving a lot of things back to school I decided that it was time to try the Imperator in my sump in the display instead... I added him a few days ago and what they say about large angels and LPS is certainly true! He immediately went to work on the Trachyphyllia and two of the three acans in my system. I removed all three after some damage (honestly, I didn't really care that they were being eaten by him but then thought that I might as well nurse them back to health and stick them in school or possibly trade them) and then also removed a couple of favias, one that he disloged and flipped over and another that he had yet to touch. There's still a couple of tiny LPS in the tank that are growing on live rock, we'll see if he touches them and whether I end up removing them as well! He has yet (knock on wood) to touch the clams in the tank. It's a wait and see as I'd rather have him in there than the clams, so if I must remove them, they'll go in the frag system.

It overtook it in about 2-3 weeks. I bought 3 firefish and one jumped out the day I got it and never resurfaced after I put it back in (it landed next to the chiller where a lot of salt had crusted...).

The fish were especially hungry tonight when I put the algae clip in so figured it was a good time to take some photos. Most of them came up to the algae clip so it made for some interesting shots with the number of tangs that were in the shot and with one of the regals competing with the tangs that are nearly twice its size for some algae. Anyway, here are the shots.

Just to give you an idea of the size, the tang below the imperator is about 5-6" long.

The unicorn tang here, which is also smaller than the imperator, is about 6" or more.

The blue belly regal is much shyer than the yellow belly, who will come out and compete with the larger fish.

You can see the blue belly in the back while the yellow belly is in the front eating with the tang. Thought this was kind of a cool shot with the different fish that decided to be out for the photo op.

Very nice tank. I hadn't seen pictures of your tank in some time. I love the regal angels. Are they difficult to get to eat ? I would love to get a pair of those.

I used to have an emperator and she ate most of my soft corals. Have you ever had an issue with lateral line disease? I am still trying to figure out the cause. My yellow tangs and hippo all have it and it is very upsetting.

Still just the one yellow tang that has it come and go. It's got a bit right now, but it's not severe at all. The unicorn tang also has some weird stuff going on with its head, but that was going on well before I got it. The imperator ate my lps, but I thought that it would. There are 4 zoanthids in the tank that he has not touched (there was a single one that has grown a bit, I didn't want it in there so I was hoping it would eat them) and he has left my clams alone as well. Other than the lps, which was expected, he has been a model citizen in the tank.

The regals didn't eat much the first few weeks although they had been picking at least before I bought them. I followed a suggestion from Copps that I keep them with plenty of rock in a darker or shaded tank, so I kept them in a 50 gallon tray with sand, rock, and no lights. I kept the first one like that for a long time until it was eating everything I tossed in there and coming to the surface to "beg" for food. This was the blue belly which I then added to the tank before putting the yellow belly in. This one spent less time in the tray but did stay there until it was eating everything I offered. I then added it to the main system knowing that it would eat. I also waited, though, until it begged at the surface. They are both doing really well in my main display now.

A couple of updates on the tank, not all good! I once again replaced the media in my reactors and... there it goes again, bleached some corals. This one was a bit more severe than last time as I also replaced the bulbs. Of course, this all began when I was out of town and having someone watch the tank, so of course, I didn't notice it and the damage was already done. Then, to top that off, the toilet above the tank leaked a few nights ago and some of the water drained into the tank. Maybe instead of saying leaked, overflowed would give a better idea of what went into the tank...

On a positive note, my water is still pretty clean and my clowns decided to begin breeding! Saw eggs last night for the first time and they are still there. Looked like they were going to eat them, but they're caring for them instead. Hopefully this will help my corals recover! I may also place a tile in there next to their anemone and see if I can raise the fry separately. Would be neat to have black ocellaris frye!

Yeah, bring on the updates ;)

Nothing good... the corals all died and I lost a few clams as well recently, but the water is back in order and the clowns are once again breeding like clockwork so I am getting ready to ramp things up again. Since I lost all of the corals, I turned off the calcium reactor so I'm getting geared up to do a large scale water change and then turn the reactor back on. After that, I'll add in a simple digitata and then start to restock. It was really depressing for awhile, but it's also a chance to rework some things.

Gahhhh  Hope, you were able to spread some of your corals around? You had some 1st rate stuff.

No idea, most of it was from others in the club. Some of them I hadn't had a chance to frag and spread around yet. The only truly unique one was the Christmas Tree Tabling Acro, there's a couple pieces out there, though.

The questions motivated me... I hooked up the calcium reactor, replenished the kalk reactor, cleaned out the skimmer, and scraped the entire front panel and added the fish that was acclimating into the main system that I wanted to add (powder blue). I also added a pair of pink skunk clownfish to the tank to see how they would react with the black percs. The percs are on the right side of the tank and never go more than a foot away from the anemone and I added the skunks on the far left side and they've taken to hovering in the back behind a bridge - also out of sight of the percs. After a major water change (will have to wait until I replace my RO filters) I'll add sps back into the system bit by bit.

Here's a few full tank shots. One of the lights went out already, but you get the picture (no pun intended) of how much coral I have lost. The front panel is clean, though!
