SandJ February 28, 2016 February 28, 2016 So, you go to you LFS and find a frag you like. You notice there are pest* in the tank. Do you... 1) buy the frag and dip when you get home? 2) buy the frag, dip and replace the rock/frag plug it is on? 3) pass it up? *pests being aiptasia, bubble algae and bryopsis (not just a random one here or there either) Asking because I am wondering if my expectations are too high about getting pest free frags. And what are the chances of any of these pests taking hold in the tank after a close inspection and dip? And for a follow up question- do you think the LFS should make people aware of the pest in the system and how to best keep it out of their tank and/or treat?
YHSublime February 28, 2016 February 28, 2016 I don't consider any of those pests. Maybe the aiptasia. Dip everything, qt everything, mitigate your risk. Trust nobody, when you reef with somebody, you reef with every other reefer they have reefed with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
pizzaguy February 28, 2016 February 28, 2016 Just my opinion and based only on the pests you have listed bryopsis no way im takimg a chance. Bubble algae i have plenty of emeralds for that. Aptasia as lomg as its not crazy bad i would cut frag off and re plug or no plug at all and i also have plenty of peppermint shrimp. Any other pest like red bugs red planaria etc absolutely no way. Again just me peraonally
pizzaguy February 28, 2016 February 28, 2016 Man i should really spell check or slow down. Sorry using a cell phone
sethsolomon February 28, 2016 February 28, 2016 those 3 IMO are not a big deal, all easily treatable. the things you more need to be looking out for are flat worms, red bugs, acro spiders, and neudis. These can destroy your coral collections.

SandJ February 29, 2016 Author February 29, 2016 Thanks to everyone for their replies :0) Trust nobody, when you reef with somebody, you reef with every other reefer they have reefed with.Issac, I will be on the lookout for the WAMAS public service announcements lol It sounds I am being overly cautious lol My daughter wanted a hammer coral but we passed due to the amount of bryopsis in the tank (also had bubble algae and aiptasia, but I was not as concerned about them). In the back of my mind I was thinking, if a store that specializes in saltwater has a hard time controlling bryopsis then will I be able to control it in my tank
AlanM February 29, 2016 February 29, 2016 There are plenty of hammer coral frags in the area that aren't covered in bryopsis or bubble algae or aiptasia. 8) It's probably fine to wait and get a different one.

LOL I know :0) We were just out shopping and she found one she liked. Local to us is over an hour away so we do not get to go shopping as often as we would like. And it is always fun to bring home new additions to the tank home! The tank is her homeschool project so I am trying to teach her the right way to do things, but being a newbie to the saltwater world (about a year in the hobby) I am still learning the right way myself :0)
