proven ways to rid aiptasia

I'm lucky to have only had a few of them. I boiled a little water in the microwave and injected the aiptasia in the mouth with a hypodermic needle. I injected each for a few seconds. Never saw them again. The needle can get deep into rock holes as well. Maybe something to consider in case more pop up in your tank on a rock that can't really be removed.

Was left over from medical treatment. Not sure where else to get them. Might try a vet office or rite aid might have them. Might help if you explain what you are trying to do.

very best way to get rid of them is with tweezers

you want the type where the tip has a flat grasping area and not ones that only go to a tiny point,

Take the coral out of the tank, If you can get the entire base of the aiptaisia you will be fine, do it out of the tank and wear gloves/glasses cause they can squirt you. You want to try to get the tweezers in from the side of the aiptasia not overtop if possible.

if a piece of the aiptasia breakes off and the base is still there scrape as best you can till you get the majority of the aiptasia's base off. most likely it will make a large slime drip...thats a good sign.

though you can usually get the entire aiptasia off without the slime....almost like pulling a zoanthid off a rock just its more fragile. it becomes and artform so to speak, i got really good at it when i was breeding nudibranchs.

Filefish work great from what i have seen.

Nudibranchs work well for LARGE aiptaisia patches but not so much for the single one her or there.

Peppermints i have NEVER had luck with..some swear by them but not me.

Good tweezers, entire tip is the grasping area

Bad tweezers...just the very tip is the grasping area

I also use an aptasia eating file fish. Problem is that it will also nip at soft polyps like zoas.

I keep my filefish in a small tank and if I find aptasia on a rock or coral I move the coral to the tank with the file fish for a few days.  The fish will usually eat the aptasia within 12 hrs. I leave it a bit longer for extra security.

For aptasia on rocks i can't remove i use joes juice.

All that maybe true, but what you had fail to read is that it is not on the ROCK, it was on the skelleton of thr frog spawn.

No i read correctly.  I thought you ment on the skeleton part and not the living tissue.  They use that part for bacterial growth which they eat.  Its a hardy coral and should be fine.  I understand your frustration and that's why i posted the video when i realized you thought everyone was just making fun of you.   This is a good community and no one is going to make fun of you without at-least answering the question and light teasing is all in good fun and not malicious.

In isolated cases, I've used lemon juice, vinegar, muriatic acid, aiptasia x, kalk paste, a laser, a DIY electrolyzer (like the majano wand), lye, super glue and other methods. I've also used peppermint shrimp, a Klein's butterfly, and a file fish.

The biological approach (with the animals) gives great suppression over the long run. If you've just got one or two that you can easily see, I'd just scrape the darn thing and then swab the area with something like vinegar or kalk paste. Leave it on for a few minutes to make sure that it's killed off. If the thing is in your tank when you treat it, then turn off the pumps in the tank to keep topical applications of kalk or Aiptasia X in place.

BTW, the majano wand is a patented device by Paul B. It was originally discussed by a variety of people in the open forums a number of years back as a DIY treatment to go after Aiptasia. It uses a DC current to perform electrolysis of the sea water (breaking it down into hydrogen and chlorine gas). While hydrogen is stable, the chlorine gas is very reactive and this is what's used to hydrolyze the tissue cells which kills the Aiptasia.

Here's a thread from early 2011 on an electric Aiptasia killer.

http://www.3reef.com/threads/diy-aiptasia-killer-using-electrolysis.103865/

And one from 2003 where a guy used the same principle to fashion a crude device using a battery to do the same

Keep in mind that with any of these targeted techniques, you have to have access to the little bugger to kill it.  That's one reason that I don't find real value in the high-powered laser approach. Not only is it a dangerous technique, you can pretty much only go after the pests that are in line of sight.
