FrontosaTony March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 I recently bought some live rock with a lot of algae on it - setting up new 120gal tank. I'm looking for some algae eaters. Suggestions? Thanks Tony
YHSublime March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 Hey Tony, I would suggest using inverts if you are just setting up a tank. Dr. Macs one of our supporting vendors sells Turbo Snails at $1.69 each I think on sale right now, they cleaned up my alage when I had a issue, and are still going strong in my tank almost a year later. If you order from them, they can bring it to our meeting, if you will be able to make that. I keep 5 in my 150 for reference, but I also have tangs.
gmerek2 March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 Is it the brownish algae? My turbos cleaned house of it. They also clean up my slimy soft green algae. They wouldn't touch the thick stringy green mat of the green hair algae i had. I couldn't get anything to eat it.
Almon March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 (edited) You should consider a full "Cleanup Crew". Check if Dr. Mac has multiple types. You can also purchase over the Internet. Blue Zoo Aquatics is an excellent option, although it's expensive. I just purchased this for a 50g and I'm really happy with it. https://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productDetail.asp?did=2&pid=1610&cid=313 9 Astraea Snails 16 Nerite Snails 16 Margarita Snails 3 Turbo Snails 20 Onyx Nassarius Snails 16 Red Leg Reef Hermit Crabs 16 Blue Leg Hermit Crabs 2 Emerald Crabs There are also other options for Cleanup Crews from them. https://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productList.asp?cid=313&did=2 Edited March 26, 2014 by Almon
wildcrazyjoker81 March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 I'm a reef cleaners fan personally. John really gives you your money's worth and then some. I think he counts by 2 or 3 s when he fills the bags. I ordered only 20 small ceriths and got closer to 100 on my last order. Same for hermits...and most of the hermits I got were fairly large at that. www.reefcleaners.org
Jesse March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 (edited) I am not trying to derail this conversation, but have you considered not using an algae covered rock? Live rock already has the ability to bring hidden pests to your tank, IMO, it is not worth using a piece(s) with known issues that can only add frustration to keeping your tank. FrontosaTony March 26, 2014 Author March 26, 2014 All, Thanks for the advice / suggestions! Jesse, I got several pieces of live rock with tons of Zoas, leathers, and mushrooms for $2/lb. Hate to see them die and I know I can buy things that will eat it. I dont have anything but rock in my tank yet. I was gonna but some crabs and snails, so I was looking for the best to help with the problem. Sorry for puting this here - was hoping for some to have some for sale - probably should have put itunder the new to hobby section. Thanks for all the help though! Tony
YHSublime March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 Tony, I moved your thread to "new to the hobby." Why don't you find out what you are wanting to fix the problem, or identify your problem and need first, and then post up a "want to buy" in the "for sale thread, want to buy" forum What part of Arlington are you in? I'm right by Ballston commons, if you ever need any help, we are neighbors.
Origami March 26, 2014 March 26, 2014 You might also manually harvest / clean the rock, then nuke it with some Algaefix marine since this is early in the tank's development and the algae is not a sign of underlying problems in your tank, but of the rock's past environment.
