A Florida man died after contracting a flesh-eating bacterial infection while wading in a river on Saturday.

...

Konietzky's death is the latest in a string of cases in Florida involving Vibrio vulnificus. The salt water bacteria, which are related to those that cause cholera, have already afflicted 26 people in Florida this year, causing nine deaths, according to Florida Department of Health data.

A few years ago I was in South America, and went on a tour of the Amazon River. I was cautioned not to go into the water, and this was one of the reasons why -

Yikes. You guys are making me scared to go near my sink.

Uh oh.  I fell off a log while pushing my canoe in Licking Creek last week.  Wonder if I should go see the doctor about this purple and green scratch on my side.

Just kidding. I wouldnt be posting on the forum if my side were falling off. At least I think I wouldnt. I have to think that creeks arent any more dangerous than they have been in the past, but we just hear about these very freak coincidences more.

I agree with this. A lot.

i thought i read a report that someone caught flesh eating bacteria from their fish tank not too long ago? maybe like a year ago?

You guy's just need to move up this way, the Cacapon river, one of the cleanest rivers in the U.S.A.

The headwaters region of the Cacapon River is known as the Lost River, receiving its descriptive name because of its abrupt termination into a one-mile underground course between the towns of Baker and Wardensville, WV

The Lost River is on the 303-D list of rivers that do not meet their designated use (in this case water contact recreation) due to high levels of fecal coliform bacteria that wash in from the ground’s surface after heavy rainfall.

Yeah, those findings come from cattle being allowed free access into the river and adjacent pastures along the river. Still cleaner than most.

Makes me wish Washington state even more...not much cleaner than glacier melt...may be cold, I would never go in it,though there are people that do,lol.....but makes for great drinking water once it makes its way through the aquifers...

I remember reading that somewhere too. Another good reason to where gloves when working inside your tank and washing up quickly afterwards.
