Squishie89 July 27, 2013 July 27, 2013 I got a baseball sized flowerpot yesterday. Gave it an hour acclimation and a 7 minute dip. It was looking great last night, polyps were emerging, but none were fully extended. I just got to my tank today and it is not looking good at all. This was the last picture I took last night. This is it now. There are some thin like strings coming off of it (not many, only a few). If anyone has any guidance or advice I would really appreciate it.
Origami July 27, 2013 July 27, 2013 Squishie, I can't see your pictures. You may not be able to link directly to a picture in a private area on R2R like this.

matt July 28, 2013 July 28, 2013 Have you checked water parameters? What kind of flow and light is it getting? I have a similar one...does ok at the bottom of my tank in 100-150 par down there on the sand. It is semi-sheltered, but gets moderate laminar flow. I've had mine a month or so.
Squishie89 July 28, 2013 Author July 28, 2013 Uploaded with ImageShack.us this was last night Uploaded with ImageShack.us This is today. I have since adjusted the lights a bit to try and make it not so bright, and I blew those strings off. I talked to the guys over at Quantum Reefs and I am going to try and give it some time to adjust to its new home. I will continue to monitor it. I have not tested yet, but I will soon/tomorrow.
zygote2k July 28, 2013 July 28, 2013 Flowerpot/Goniopora is not a reef coral. It is best housed in the same environment that would support Carnation corals and other NPS types even though it does require light but mostly requires heavy feeding. Retailers who sell Goniopora are doing a disservice to the hobby by selling these types of corals to uninformed hobbyists. 90% of the Goniopora dies in hobbyist tanks even if it's been aquacultured. This coral should be on the ban list.
Coral Hind July 28, 2013 July 28, 2013 The strings coming off of it are just slime from the coral. Once it settles in that will stop unless it is unhappy. If all your water test are where they should be I would just give a few days and see if it adjusts to the tank.

Nothing is risk free of course, but there is a lfs who is well known for contributions to the hobby regarding gonis. I agree that dirtier lagoon setups are suppose to be better...personally,I'm waiting to see how my two frags do as an experiment. Hope OP has success too.
rebekwl July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Very tough coral to keep, I have never had much luck .. Unfortunate too ,since it's such a cool coral
miggs76 July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 I've had a pink goni that I bought from pacific east aquaculture for 15 months now. Its in a SPS tank with very clean conditions. I don't feed it. Its doing just fine. When I first put it in the tank it wasn't happy until I gave it more light.
Squishie89 July 29, 2013 Author July 29, 2013 Thank you everyone for the help. Yesterday it was worse, only 1 or 2 polyps slightly emerged. I did a 15% water change and I also am using a towel to block the light partially. It has responded well to these new changes. Last night polyps were beginning to emerge again, and today even more are out. I have the towel blocking my "white" light, so it is just getting actinic lights at the moment. So I believe it was just getting too much light. Hopefully ti can be acclimated to my lights with time, but I am not rushing it. Luckily the corals that are nearby are not too upset about the lighting changes (3 plates, 1 frogspawn and some candy canes).Uploaded with ImageShack.us Yesterday before making changes. TheyCallMeMr.703 July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 That's Great... Do you have another spot you could move it to.., That the others will still get their light?? But that one will be limited form such?
Squishie89 July 29, 2013 Author July 29, 2013 I am trying to avoid moving it. Too many changes and then you don't know what made it better. Since it is responding I may try and position the towel jjuusstt right so only the FP is not getting the brunt of the light. And to be honest, I was just so glad it had made improvements.

It's also another poor choice in a reef tank. Just because that guy has had one for 15 months, I'd still shy away from this coral at all costs. Worse survival rate than Copperband B'fly.
Squishie89 August 1, 2013 Author August 1, 2013 My flowerpot has finally begun behaving =P I think it just needed to be acclimated to my lights and adjust to the tank. All polyps are out and quite a few have extended. It is looking like a beautiful flowerpot now. Thank you everyone for your help.http://squishie90gfowlr.tumblr.com/post/57086150538/look-at-my-fp-can-you-believe-it-it-finally
Origami August 1, 2013 August 1, 2013 Glad to hear it! It looks nice. Hope that it continues to do well for you.
