According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire at the home on Duvall Drive was accidental emanating from the light and pump components of a fish tank in the living room

What lights and pumps where responsible? That's horrible. I'd be totally detroyed if that happend to my dogs :(

This is horrible. I'm so sorry. what do they need? I have loads of stuff I just took out of my in-laws storage unit. A lot in excellent condition; sheets, towels, coats, etc.. also have very nice clothes I was going to send to consignment shop.

A AFCI will more then likely trip if a pump or light sparkes up but the problem is

they can trip just from lightning during a storm or for no reason......anybody

running a reef tank with AFCI circuit breakers.

Sorry to hear this. Especially sad about the dogs as well. Like Jan said, if you know if theres anything anybody can do to help.

They do not have a final report yet. 38g tall, HOB Tetra filter, heater and strip T-12 bulbs. SW fish only. Middle of old house. Wind was blowing at about 30mph.

This is terrible for these folks.

Davelin315 runs AFCI breakers with no problem. Coral Hind said he had to take them off because the MH would trip them when starting up. They talked about in one of my question threads a month ago, or so. Since I don't have MH, I think I'm going to install AFCI breakers and GFCI outlets on them with a ground probe in the sump.

I run a panel of 4 gfci that work great but fear putting afci in my breaker boxes.

I understand code says to not put on kitchen circuit because the Refrigerator trips them.

Flip side is it might be the only thing stopping your house from burning down.

When I worked at Fox Mill Pets, we had a reef tank catch fire and burn the back room. It was caused by saltcreep on a powerstrip or saltwater coming in contact with electricity. If you looked under the cabinet, it was the typical fish tank- cords and wires running everywhere and electrical components very close to saltwater.

IMO, most fires on fish tanks are caused by water getting into electrical components. If you move all electric components away from water sources or salt creep, the chances of having a fire drop significantly.
