Keep your A/C on until the lights go out. Try to keep temps at 76-78. Fill baggys with RO/DI water. Make sure you double bag, then freeze them. Leave some air at the top of the baggy so it can float. Ice already floats but when it melts you want to be able to take it out easily. If electricity goes out and you need to bring the temp down in your DT you can float the frozen bags of water or place them in a breeding/holding basket with the powerhead pointing to it. I mean if temps get to over 82-83 degrees. For seahorse tanks keep temp below 76. Bring temps down slowly! You don't want to go below 71 degrees because you wont be able to raise the temp with no electricity. Everything is a balancing act in this hobby. Good luck!

Good tips and reminder, Jan!

1. If you use SW in baggies, it won't freeze as fast as FW. SW will melt faster than FW so it won't keep the tank cooler as long as FW.

2. Don't completely fill the baggies with water. It expands when it freezes, so the bags may tear. If you froze FW you could end up diluting your tank. Either way, you will have a messy freezer as the temp raises from lack of power.

3. Adding the bags of ice will displace water volume, meaning that if your system can't handle the temporary raise of volume, you will have to remove SW from the tank. If the ice is FW, make sure to have some SW already mixed to replace volume after removing the bags of melted FW.

Hope you guy's and gal's are ok, looks like your getting the worst of it.

Well, that was an interesting bike ride home in the pouring freaking rain with thunder/lightning near by!

I couldn't tell you the last time I was that wet with clothes on!

On the news I just heard them talking about "rain wrapped tornadoes" as a possibility. Is this something anyone has heard of before?

I feel like every few years the weather folk come up with something new to throw out there... like the "thunder snow" phenomenon from a couple years back.

Weeeeeee what fun!!!! Last storm cost us $13,000.00 let's see what this can do

Round 2 just came thru here, just some heavy rain.

  • 3 weeks later...

So maybe depending on the size of the tank it would be good to invest in a chiller and a generator.

As shown by ALL the possible issues,, not just with storms, but A/C going out, power going out... we all need to have some kind of back up plans... Im going to be putting about 5 gallon size bags of water in my freezer this weekend (since my 50g tank isnt up yet)...

i found old clean soad bottles filled and froze works great just rember do NOT fill all the way and leave the lid OFF tell frozen then put it back on

Awesome idea!
