trockafella November 6, 2012 November 6, 2012 I like the 400w MH, and I plan on getting a 20k Radium at Christmas, which I am sure will be great. Sounds like changing bulbs to me.!

Ryan S November 6, 2012 Author November 6, 2012 I vote 12 bulb T5 sfiligoi has a sweet 12 bulb fixture actually...
epleeds November 6, 2012 November 6, 2012 sfiligoi has a sweet 12 bulb fixture actually... there is one for sale that is an 8 bulb with the LED's in the center. you posted it earlier. would look sweet over your tank.

Ryan S November 6, 2012 Author November 6, 2012 i am not giving up on the MH. at least not yet. i just want a better reflector. if i cant find someone with it used, for $100, i will just buy it new from brs. if, 6 months from now, i've been running that reflector with a 400w radium, and my sps look crappy... then i will consider trying T5. but i dont think that will happen. plus the chiller is working perfectly.
BowieReefer84 November 6, 2012 November 6, 2012 If your sps are looking crappy with a quality reflector and 400w radium it's NOT the light.
Ryan S November 6, 2012 Author November 6, 2012 If your sps are looking crappy with a quality reflector and 400w radium it's NOT the light. touche good sir. thus, why the T5 is an unlikely scenario I suppose.
Ryan S November 6, 2012 Author November 6, 2012 11/6/12 FTS: The following photos are to try and demonstrate where the reflector is brightest and where there are darker areas on the edges/corners of the tank. Front Photo: Left Side: Right Side: From Above #1: From Above #2:
epleeds November 7, 2012 November 7, 2012 the only dark areas i see are where the rocks are shading the sand. I really dont see how changing the reflector is going to change that. I would just move the SPS frags that are in the corners a closer the the middle or higher and leave it at that.
epleeds November 7, 2012 November 7, 2012 (edited) and what is all those purple patches on your rocks? it is putty thats colored to look like coraline? One thing you might think about is taking one of the MP40's and putting it on the side pane. The pics look like the large structure on the right side could be blocking some of the flow. Maybe center the one on the back wall between both structures and put the other on a side and put them as slave/master and alternate the current. Edited November 7, 2012 by epleeds
Ryan S November 7, 2012 Author November 7, 2012 the purple spots are coraline patches that have popped up all over the rock. the darkest spot is definitely the back right where the tallest tower is. i will try moving a vortech to the right side, thanks for the suggestion.
Ryan S November 7, 2012 Author November 7, 2012 So the consensus is that the $100 brs reflector, made for 3'x3' or 4'x'4 coverage, would not be a good upgrade from the current reflector, which is not meant to cover a 3'x3' tank? (I have already moved SPS pieces from the corners to the middle, but otherwise, that's good advice).
Incredible Corals November 7, 2012 November 7, 2012 I think the tank looks great. You are well on your way!
Ryan S November 7, 2012 Author November 7, 2012 I think the tank looks great. You are well on your way! Thanks Steve, but the image in my head looks a lot nicer than the tank does right now. I want it to look like these tanks:
Incredible Corals November 7, 2012 November 7, 2012 It will take a few years. Unless, you buy a bunch of big colonies to start with
GraffitiSpotCorals November 7, 2012 November 7, 2012 Even if you buy a bunch of big colonies it will take a few years for your tank to be stable enough to have them color up like thoes pics. I am kind of amazed at how much stuff your constantly thinking about changing and or adding to your tank to get things to look better. It took me two years to get some of the wild frags I got to look anywhere near decent. Basically by the time they were decent sized colonies (5"+).
onux20 November 7, 2012 November 7, 2012 No reflector will get light to penetrate rock. Take advantage and put some lower light coral back there. And I bet the tanks you are chasing look so good becasue of consistency over a long period of time. Relax...OOOoooooossssssaaaaaaa....
