No reflector will get light to penetrate rock.

Take advantage and put some lower light coral back there.

And I bet the tanks you are chasing look so good becasue of consistency over a long period of time.

Relax...OOOoooooossssssaaaaaaa....

Why do you guys always think I am not calm? I am calm. :P

Do you see the large pillar in the back right? I picture that being a nice piece of real estate for a couple nice SPS pieces that could grow upwards towards the surface of the water. However, because the reflector doesn't really get much light there, I have had to move most of my sps pieces to the middle side, and just put the one piece on top, which isn't getting much light anyway. If I had better light from above, ON TO that large pillar, then I could actually grow SPS on it.

Those people spent YEARS accomplishing that, not 9 months. I am a firm believer in light not being the key to growing coral. Not to mention you started with a lot of tiny frags, some wild some propogated.. Constant change will never help. Everytime you move a coral your stunting the growth, everytime you change drastic things, like lighting, your stunting growth. I think everyone who has large beautiful colonies will tell you that it takes lots of time and consistency.. I would love to see a timeline of your tank build.

It's been 9 months. I don't expect it to happen overnight. I just want it to be setup TO get there, eventually. I'm not sure the setup is optimal yet is all. I wish I had started with mini colonies instead of 1" frags, that's definitely a lesson learned.

Ok... First, you wont know if it works until you let it ride out. Secondly, sell all (or most) those frags and buy some colonies. Im sure you have enough frags to sell to buy 4-5 nice colonies.

Excellent idea!!

That's a very good idea, and Ialmost did just that. When ridetheducati sold off his huge and awesome colonies, I almost bought several of them to replace my frags. However, with the wedding in June, the reef budget has been axed. But maybe an opportunity will come up like that again the future, we'll see.

I thought you just got cleared for an upgrade.? If you sell the frags, you can use that money to fund new colonies. I think 3-4 nice colonies will make your tank look better than 124 different nubs in there (no offense). Big corals in a small tank look great, tiny corals in a big tank look silly. Just pull the trigger and go for the colonies.!

impatient mofo's.....i started almost everything in my tank from a frag. Thats half the fun for me to watch them fill out to their glory. Granted its nice to have a colony and no waiting but then you cant really say it was you tank that made it grow to look like that (not that it really matters)

if you want a colony or two buy some cheaper/non named colonies to fill the voids, keep the frags of nice stuff to save money and STOP TRYING TO CHANGE THINGS and see what they do for you.

I think cutting off your internet for a year would be the best thing for your tank

when are you moving your colonies Evan? I was going to volunteer to help you move. And I may accidentally drop a few colonies here and there, but offer to take them off your hands for no charge. :)

I agree that you should keep the REALLY nice frags, but you seriously have like 60 little frags, I agree its nice to see frags grow in, but theyre not growing much, so at least the colonies would make it look that waybiggrin.gif ..

Well, I do have lots of really nice frags that I got from Evan and Graham. Some day they will be rock star colonies. I will just leave everything alone and let it all continue to grow. Humdehum.

unless i find someone selling that particular reflector used on wamas or RC... of course... ;)

Awesome.

L M F A O .....

Seriously, you just have to keep coming back. Im bummed when its been 3 days and Ryan has changed something, I mean posted something..

There is actually a lot of really good advice and info on here, to bad the OP ignores it all.!

This is the only saving grace and hopefully others will learn from this thread. I just hope WAMAS' reputation isn't compromised in-doing so.

I only keep coming back because I await the day Ryan S develops a plan...I try to sarcastically put things into perspective, but it doesn't seem to stick...

I would love for you to step outside your shoes and spend a day reading your thread. See if your reaction is similar to one you may have had while surfing the web for other build threads.

In all seriousness, you obviously spend several hours online admiring other people's tanks, reading product reviews, learning new methodologies, etc. Just develop a plan for your tank! You obviously have the passion and the equipment to turn your tank into something special, but you constantly change your plan and your tank goes nowhere.

Find a mentor, a vendor, a system that you want to emulate and stick with that methodology and see if it works for you...only change as needed.

For the record: the only thing that's changed in almost 1 year - is the recent switch from LED to MH. The structure of the aquascape remains completely unchanged. I don't think I change the system as often as everyone seems to think. I may talk about it - run ideas by you guys, but most of the time, I DO follow the advice given, which is to leave everything alone. I am just a little bored waiting for the corals to fill in I suppose. I do have a plan though, in my head. Or at least "an image" of what I want the tank to look like, and so far everything is in place to make that happen, more or less. I want a RC-TOTM-Quality SPS tank with large sps branches all over the rocks in the tank. I have the SPS frags, they just need to grow, a lot. And a larger reflector would only help certain areas get a little more light, that's all.
