hlem July 9, 2012 July 9, 2012 ok, you'll have to wait another 10-12 hours though, i dont get home until 6-7pm tonight :(
hlem July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 here it is, pics taken at 9pm see the big nub in the middle? that's the original single polyp. this is about 7-8 months worth of growth. percentage wise, I would say it has grown over 10x, maybe even 20x. that say that's pretty good growth, would love my other big colonies to grow that fast.
wogga July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 very awesome. so who's going to take a BIG frag of something branchy and try this method?
hlem July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 what's something branchy? i can do it if if someone donate a single polyp frag
Origami July 10, 2012 Author July 10, 2012 That looks great, Ha. It's grown a lot and looks like it's started to form a few axial coralites as well. It won't be long before it starts branching, I'll bet. In fact, I think I see the nubs of new coralites on some of the early branches.
wogga July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 what's something branchy? i just meant something that would allow a large frag to still have a narrow enough base to insert into the flower plug.
Coral Hind July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 Nice growth rate! I would check that frag and your other corals closely as it looks like it has red bugs.

hlem July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 (edited) Imagine what the growth rate would without the parasites. Oh my.... I need interceptor, don't I? Edited July 10, 2012 by hlem
Coral Hind July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 Yes, I would get some interceptor. Also, it looks like you have hydroids on the plug which can limit the outer growth spread of the coral's base. You might want to remove them too.
Coral Hind July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 If you can't find interceptor to treat the whole tank you can remove the corals and use the Bayer Advanced Insect Killer. Again, only use the Bayer as a dip, not the for the whole tank. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1965880
hlem July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 Thanks I'll give that a try. But I'll eventually need to treat the whole tank as I have a few colonies attached to rocks. But seems to be okay tho. I'll check tonight to see if those have the bugs as well.
hlem July 10, 2012 July 10, 2012 And hydroids are just the algae, right? I do have some algae in the frag tank that I pull out once in awhile.
wogga July 12, 2012 July 12, 2012 (edited) Hydroids are the stringy translucent things seen here growing off of the left bottom side of the plug as pictured. Edited July 12, 2012 by wogga
hlem July 19, 2012 July 19, 2012 Updates? Haven't had a chance to go get the bayer, maybe this weekend. I did clear put the hydroids manually.
Sharkey18 July 23, 2012 July 23, 2012 I was cleaning up some corals this weekend and fragging some zoas. I also have a frag of purple monster that is suffering from STN. I've fragged it several time but it keeps STNing. So I took one the remaining pieces that wasn't looking so good and cut off two individual polyps. I just superglued them to a plug. We'll see what happens. Without flash under LED / Actinics With flash

Coral Hind August 21, 2013 August 21, 2013 Still not bad for single polyp. Hopefully it colors back up and starts taking off in growth again.
Origami August 21, 2013 Author August 21, 2013 That's really good. The first one looks a lot like some of the single polyps / tiny cluster of polyps I grew out over the last several months (I wasn't counting, but it was probably 6 or so). I got the same sort of result: Encrusting out to the side, then down the rubber cap, then new axial polyps (future branches) coming out along the corner where the cap turns changes direction. When the coral gets as far down on the rubber cap as it does, it soon becomes tough to get the cap off the tube without cracking the encrusted coral. Not a huge problem since you can just glue down the pieces onto a piece of rubble. Now that you've got some branching, maybe you should consider moving it to a more permanent location.
