roni August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 I've been using a simple float valve to shut off my RO output for my topoff reservoir and then trying to remember to turn off the unit. However, since this doesn't shut down the source water, I'd like to figure out a better solution. From what I understand, using something like this: http://www.reefgeek.com/care_&_maintenance/Water_Purifiers/Parts_&_Accessories/Auto_Shut-Off_Valve_Kit_w!_1!4_inch__QD_&_Check_Valve_by_Applied_Membranes isn't the best solution since it will result in rapid cycling of the unit on and off. I was thinking of getting a solenoid and having that on my Apex to fill 1-2 times per week (after figuring out how much water I make in general). Any recs?
Big Country August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 My Typhoon III RO/DI unit has that Auto Shut Off Valve installed on it. When the container pushes the float up it stops the water going into the RO unit, never had a problem with it and have never noticed it cycling on and off at all. Of course if your float valve is somewhere where the water is moving you will probably have a cycling problem because the float is bouncing. I regularly forget to turn off my RO unit and the ASOV shuts it off for me, I just go by later and turn the water off since mine is feeding from the faucet with a diverter valve.
Coral Hind August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 I use a solenoid I took off of an old dishwasher. You can also buy them already set up with JG fittings. http://www.fishbowl-innovations.com/products/97-top-off-solenoid.aspx
Origami August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 I picked up my solenoid from autotopoff.com http://autotopoff.com/solenoid/ I use it to control the timing on my RO/DI production so that it's making larger amounts (rather than smaller amounts) of water. This makes the components (especially the DI resin) last longer as you have fewer bursts of the high concentration dissolved solids that you get when the system starts up.

Origami August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 That's a good idea! It pays for itself quickly when used this way. I went from having to refill my DI resin stage every 2 -3 months, to every 6-9 months at the old place....
atoa August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 I've used a garden hose timer with a hose to john guest adapter. You can find relatively inexpensive hose timers in Home Depot. I bought a programmable, 9V battery run for about $25. Sent using Tapatalk
Jon Lazar August 15, 2011 August 15, 2011 I can never remember to shut mine off either, so I set the timer on the microwave. The reservoir also has a float shutoff as a backup. I thought about using multiple float switches, valves, and my Aquacontroller to automate everything, but the microwave timer works pretty well and is much less complicated.
OldReefer August 16, 2011 August 16, 2011 This one is good and cheap: I use it with 2 float switches and my Apex. It fills my 20 gallon top-off container about once a week. http://cgi.ebay.com/1-4-Electric-Solenoid-Valve-12-volt-Air-Water-BBTF-/290578532901?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a7d48a25#ht_2155wt_922
