Gathering all the equipment for the new 90 spa mostly tank that ill be starting soon. Now,I have been debating the equipment for flow. First it was between hydro and runs but rather then wasting money now, I rather save up for something good.

What would make me and my sps happy?

I can get 2 mp20s, 2 mp40s or tunz. Which would be preferred for 90?

well i should have mentioned; what would be the best for its price?

if tunze is cheaper, would it give me the same benefits as the vortech that is twice as much?

i rather buy used vortechs and try to save some then buying new one.

IMO... I think the vortechs are the best, hands down.. If you get tunzes and a controller the priece isnt much different.. Plus vortechs have exceptional customer service and a battery back up.

Having had both, I would say it comes down to preference.

Both have exceptional customer service and are of comparable cost (when the tunze controller is included).

Both are exceptional pumps and will meet your circulation needs efficiently.

The MP40s take up less tank space with no electrical components submerged.

The Tunzes can be directed to specifically meet your desires for flow preference.

Good luck with your decision, IMO, you will be happy either way.

i'll come on the other side of this. while i like the vortechs being out of the tank, the tunzes put out more current (not as big a deal in your tank) and are directable. also, i believe in general tunze have proven to be more reliable and have the backing of one of the best dealers in the business, roger vitko.

i think they are both great pumps and have their purpose.

here's a thread on rc if you want other opinions.

Disagree about the vortechs. You get a 1 year warranty and after that, you're on your own. I had an MP40 wet side go bad 3 weeks after the warranty ran out.......they pretty much said "tough, this is how much a new wet side costs". They wouldn't even give me a break on shipping. Tunzes are much better. They may not have quite all of the control options as the vortech, but you can angle them like you want and the customer service blows vortech out of the water.

Which tunze pumps will be comparative with the mp40? I'm trying to see the price difference.

I really like my Tunze's. Have not had any major issues with them. The issues i did have Roger took care of me at no cost. I had a 6101 that was acting up and they replaced it with the new version 6105. The 6101 was 2 1/2 years old. Go with the 6105 if you choose Tunze. I also love that you can tweak the direction of the flow were you cant with the Vortec.

I've had both and got rid of the Vortechs and went back to the Tunzes. I got tired of listening to the motor block whine as sped up and slowed down. They also forgot night mode all the time. That said, the flow they create is amazing.

2xmp40 is WAY too much. Its on the top end, but 2xmp10s with an extra powerhead on the back or maybe 3 mp 10s would be better.

I have 2x6055 on my 75 and I think I'd do the same on a 90.

I have done both. Both are very good. Vortech clearly wins in my book. Much nicer flow, much more flexibility.

well i am impressed with reviews on both.

I might try both, vortech on 90 and tunez on the other tank.

For a 90 gal, if the mp40 is too much, would it be better with mp10's? or mp20's?

rather then 3 mp10's, how about 2 mp20's?

On my 90 gallon I have a single MP40 on the opposite side of the tank from my return flow. I split the return into two for the that side of the tank. Not sure what kind of flow you are going for though. I wanted flow around the medium spectrum of things because I have seahorses in the tank. The MP40 on lagoon mode about 75% power and then return flow at around 600GPH meet this well. If you want higher flow maybe an MP40 on one side and an MP10 with your return flow on the other. I agree with hypertech that two MP40s is overkill, having said that though you could make a standing wave with two and you can always adjust them down if you do not mind spending the extra cash. Kind of a preference thing.

Easy answer.

It depends.

How do you feel about a big ugly motor hanging on the outside of each side of your tank? (Seriosly, I love mine, but if it was in a dentist's office where someone could pull the pump off it would not be a good thing.) Would you rather have 2 little pumps hiden on the back walls / overflows? What do you plan to have in the tank? SPS? LPS? Softies? All of the above? What kind of fish?

You have narrowed down to the 2 best IMHO... good for you. Now it is up to personal preferance, Tunze 6105s w/wavemaker are about the same cost as 2 MP40s.
